Wo have frequently, for the past seven or eight years heard stories told concerning" a monster that in habits a body of water known a Cra ter lake, which is siiuatcJ about fifty five miles west of north of iiinkviilc but up to this time paid but little attention to it, supposing that it was nothing more than a superstitious story circulated only- by tho native Indian. But since the return of Mr. John Shallock, who, with others, has seen the monster and uo mistake, we arc now compelled to believe other wise, and that there is a very huge animal of some kind that mhabrts Crater Lake is a fixed fact. Mr. Shallock. in describing this animal, says it looks to be as large as a man s bo'dv, and was swimming with about two'or three feet out of water, and going at a rapid rate, as fast as a man could row a skiiT. leaving a similar wave behind it. Its face or head looked white, and although il was a long way off they could plainly see that it was of an immense size. Sev eral shots were fire.1 al it while swim ming, but il was so far off that they cculd not even seo where their bullets struck the venter. ?Jr. Chas. 3Coore, who has visited the lake, says that the cliffs aronud the lake are from 1,500 to 3,000 feet above thowaterand almost perpendicular, there being only one place thai parties can de scend to the lake, and when seen at that distance they look liko small children. If this indeed be the case, the animal seen by Shallock and par ty must indeed be a huge animal of some kind. Kla math, (h, Star. Why The Rahy Cried. The happiest hit of the season was made by a lady at "Waverly the day Gov. Bate and Judge Koid spoke there. The Judge bec.ime verj-uer-vous at tho crying of a baby, and asked if it could not be made to stop crying. Its mother pacified tho child and it w.ns still awhile, but it began crying again, and the Judge said: "Let that child be taken out; it his uo business at a public speaking." The mother promptly saiil: ''Sir, my child is crj'ing to hear Gov. Bate speak."--JremjyJii.t Lidyi r. Do Lesseps does well to visit his Panama canal; for, if the reports are trustworthy, it certainly requires his presence. Of the 10,000 men ostensi bly working upon it, less than half during the wet season could be em ployed and GOO were in the hospitals or at home sick. The idea of opening it in 1SSS is pronounced preposter ous. According loP.nn.ima estimates $80,000,000. or one-third of the capi tal has been spent, and only one thirtieth of the canal been fiuished. Time and money have been wasted in planting trees and shrubbery, and improving the landscape, while the real work has dragged. However, that is something in which tho French and other Europeans who havo invested in the scheme will ba the most interested. On the loth of September Yoke hama and Tokio were visited by a terrible typhoon. In the latter city 3.000 houses were wholly or partially destroyed, and twenty persons killed. The loss of life at sea is appalling, and no estimate could be made ot tho number. The typhoon was followed by another of great force, on the I7lh, but of brief duration. PILES! PILES! PILES!
