ra fo gniUj storiatn ASTORIA, OREGON: WEDNESDAY.... LOCTOBEE 15, IBS! LATEST IE0M OHIO. A Probable Eepublican Majority of 18,000. Columbus,' Ohio. 7 p. m. Ten wards and precincts shoTT a net Ee publican gain of '178 over tbe vote of 1883. Eeturns from the western part of tbe state indicate tbat tbe vote will be tbe heaviest ever polled in tbe state. Tbe Kepublicans are claiming gains, but there are not enough re turns in yet to indicate the result: 7:30, P. m. The bulletins for the Ohio vote will be based upon the vote of '83, -when tbe Democrats bad a ma jority of 12,529. There are 1,892 wards and precincts in tbe state. It will require an average of seven votes to the ward or precinct for tbe Ee publicans to overcome the Democrat ic majority and carry the election. Twenty-two wards and precincts show a Republican gain of 289. Thirty-five wards and precincts show a net .gain of 3S3; this includes a large number of wards from cities, bnt no returns from Columbus, Cincinnati, or Cleveland. 830 r. m, Forty-five wards and precincts show a net Eepublican gain of 57G. No returns from the large cities. Kenton, Ohio, the home of Gov. Eobinson, show a net Eepub lican gain of 182. The loth ward in Cleveland shows a net Eepublican gain of 218. Eeturns up to now, in cluding a number of medium sized cities and precincts show that if the same rate is kept up all through tbe state there will be A EEPUBLICAN MAJOMTT OF 18,000. 9 p. M. Ninety-six wards and pre cincts show a Eepublican gain of 1, 422. 850 p. jr. Eeturns from thir teen wards and precincts in the state of "West Virginia, show a net Eepub lican gain of 113. One hundred and fifty precincts in Ohio show a net Eepublican gain of 1,92G. The wards of the city of Columbus are divided into twenty-seven pre cincts. Eeturns from six show a net .Eepublican gain of 107. One hun dred and seventy-eight wards and precincts in Ohio give net Eepublican majority of 2,431. The Eepublican majority on secre tary of state in 1880 was 16,000; com paring the 22G precincts and wards received with tbat year shows a net Democratic gain of 318. Tbe same ratio throughout the state would give a Eepublican majority of 10,000. Com paring tbe 226 precincts with tbe vote of 1883 shows a net Eepublican gain of .3,670; tbe same ratio of gain throughout tbe state indicate a Ee publican majority of 13,000; 324 wards and precincts in Ohio shows a net Eepublican gain of 4,830. Three hundred and sixty-six pre cincts and wards in Ohio show a net Eepublican gain of 5,627. The latest from "West Virginia at 11 p. m. indicate tbat "Wilson, Demo cratic candidate for governor, has car ried tbe state, but no figures are given. 1130 p. m. Fifty-five precincts in Hamilton county show a net Eepubli can gain of 2,744. This is about one half the precincts in the county. 471 wards and precincts in Ohio show a netEepnblican gain of 7,317. The Wheeling lieghter (Dein.) claims the election of "Wilson, Demo cratic candidate for governor of "West Virginia by from 7,000 to 10,000 ma jority. 11:35 p. m. Seventy precincts in Hamilton county show a net Eepub lican gainof 3.75S. McKinley (Eep.) is elected to congress from tho 20th district Butterwortb (Eep.) from tbe First district, is also elected. 11-45 p.m. 531 wards and precincts in Ohio show a net Republican gain of 8,417. 11:45 p. m. 5S5 wards and pre cincts in Ohio show a net Eepub lican gain of 9.8S6. 11:55 pm. Brown, Eepublican, is elected in Second district 12:10. Late returns show increased Eepublican gains. "We have heard from a little over one third of the state, if the remaining two-thirds are correspondingly Eepublican indica tions are majority will exceed 19,000, and probably reach 20,000. Very meagre returns from "West Virginia give nothing positive as to result Seven hundred and seven wards and precincts in Ohio show net Eepublican gain 10,939. Foran (Dem.) is elected to Congress for 21st Dist. 1 a. m. 768 wards and precincts in Ohio show net Eepublican gains of 11,969. 1-40 a. M. Eeturns from "WestVir ginia are very meagre, but Eepubli- cans cpneede the election of "Wilson as governor. 150 A. M. If Eepublican gain through the state continues as the 828 precincts so far heard from show .the Eepublican majority in tbe state will be 16,500. Thbee different civil engineers have made estimates of the quantity of water pouring over Niagara Falls every minute, and there is a difference of two quarts between tbe highest and the lowest. A Philadelphia official stole the roof off tbe poor bouse and sold it, but one in Hungary sold tho doors and windows and floors as well, and herded the inmates in aibarn. - CrBusW. Field, who has lately made a visit through tho northwest, has expressed his opinion of this sec tion, and is very flattering. But, says The Dalles Times Mountaineer, what good will -rich country do set tlers if the products or tbe soil are taxed so high for transportation that it does not pay them to cultivate the soil? It is a fact in Eastern Or egon and "Washington that wheat is no longer remunerative on account of the high freights. Tbe farmers' of any portion of the northwest can raise an abundance, but what is the use of spending labor on a crop when it only brings 35 or 40 cents a bushel after being hauled fifteen or twenty miles to a shipping point At the last meeting of the Portland Board of Trade, a communication was read from Henry Hewett, "calling 'at tention to the fact that some ships had been taken down river drawing much less water than others, thereby causing heavy loss to the owners, and intimating that it was of little use to spend money in dredging the river if pilots are to bo allowed to fix the draught of ships at any figure they fancy." Tho best way out of the difficulty to which Mr. Hewett directs attention is to load vessels where such a pull-dog-pull-devil Btyle of do ing business need not obtain. Load the sea-going vessels at Astoria and save the interests of the "farmer." When the state Eepublican conven tion assembled in this city last spring a majority of the delegates were de termined to instruct for Blaine, and howled down all suggestions tbat it might be well to send uninstructed delegates. Their enthusiasm for Blaine was boundless; what has be come of it? Did it melt in its own fire? Certain it is that nothing has been heard from these gentlemen since. Yesterday's Oregonian. Certain it is that tho Oregonian is either tronbled with lapse of memory or else is "conspicuously inexact." A good deal has been heard from the men that hurrahed for Blaine in tbat convention, and a good deal more will be beard from them in the remaining three weeks. But isn't the Oregon ian beginning its crawfish movement a little previous, as it were? Somb twenty libel suits have been brought against Oregon newspapers during the past year by irate indi viduals who fancied .that they were aggrieved by personal remark. They have all dropped through and gone by default Injured individuals are sometimes apt to confuse definition of character with defamation of char acter. The New York Daily Commercial Bulletin reports the losses by fire in the United States-and Canada dnring September at $9,200,000, a larger loss than ever before known in Septem ber. So far the fires of 1884 have been at a rate which, if kept up un til the end of the year, will make the year's fire loss foot up $111,000, 000. The Seattle Post Intelligencer keeps up the fight against the N. P. B. E. and calls upon the people of "Washington territory to rebuke the recent Eepublican convention tbat nominated Armstrong by defeating tbe nominee. The figures for Massachusetts show that the workingmen of that state produce a value of $696 a year each, and receive in wages $247 a year each. In Boston the average value of a workingman's labor is $850 and bis wages $500. The telephone of the future will take up a whisper at one end and de liver it as loud talking at the other. It will be done by relaying the voice midway in the transmission. m In Pennsylvania the average wnrfc- ingman's labor is worth $730, and his wages are $350. In Maine a work ingman's labor is worth $566 a year ana nis wages $257. . The international -nrime meriflinTi conference in Bession at "Washington nas adopted the meridian of Green wichfrom which "to determine the world's longitude. For Sale. fiOOD GENTLE HORSE. .
