m be gattjj IMforiatu ASTORIA, OREGON: TUESDAY OCTOBER 14, 188! TO-DAYS CONTEST OHIO'S CON GRESSMEN. Ik the congress elected in the pres idential year of 18S0, the house con tained 293 members. Under the new apportionment, which went into oper ation in 1882, the number of members was raised to 825. Under the old apportionment Ohio had 20 members; under the new she has "21. Of the 20 elected in 18S0, when Garfield car ried the state by 31,000 plurality 15 were Republicans. In 1882, the "off year," the Democrats elected 13 and the Republicans 8; but the Republi can member, Morey, elected by a plurality of 41 in the Seventh dis trict, and the Republican, McKinley, elected by a plurality of 8 in the Eighteenth district, were both un seated by the present Democratic house and their seats given, respect ively, to Campbell (Dem.) and Wal lace (Dem.). So it happens that the present representation of Ohio in the present house stands: Democrats, 15; Republicans, C. The great fight in Ohio to-day is for congressmen, the state ticket be ing already jxbandoned as lost by the Democrats. The Republican and Democratic candidates are as follews: Dist'ts. I Republican. Democratic. 1st 2d 3d 4th ftth Cth 7th 8tli 9th 10tu... 11th.... 12th.. .. 13th .. 14th .. 15Uu ltfth. .. 17th. .. 18th 19th .. 20th .. 2l-t K.Butterworth John Follett Adam A. Kramer Chas.E. A Koran In the Fourth, Sixteenth, Nineteenth, Twentieth and Twenty-first districts there are prohibition candidates, and in the fifteenth there is a greenback nominee. In the Fourteenth and Sixteenth, at the last election, there were no prohibition votes polled. In the Nineteenth the prohibition vote was 1090, but the Republican plural ity was 8031. In the Twentieth the prohibition vote was 1189, and doubt less carried the election for the Dem ocratic candidate by the small plur ality of 110. In the Twenty-first the prohibition vote was 1189, but as the Democratic plurality was 4538, this candidate did not affect the result The Republicans are now confident of reclaiming the First, or Cincinnati district, the Third, the Sixth, the Fifteenth and the Twentieth, and of re-electing the unseated members Morey of the old Seventh and McKin ley of the Eighteenth by round ma jorities in their now districts. This will make the delegation stand: Re publicans, 13; Democrats, 8. But from the recent enormous apparent Republican gains all over the stale on the tariff issue, they are encour aged to believe that Romeis will be able to defeat the free-trader, Frank Hurd, in the tenth or Toledo district, with something more of an equal show for General Brown in the sec ond, which is composed of a part of Cincinnati and all of Hamilton coun ty outside of the city limits. In 18S0 this district nearly the same it is now gave a republican plurality of 1,004; but in 1832, owing to the pro hibition question, it gave a Demo--cratic plurality of 1,81G. The tenth, or Hurd's district, gave him in 18S2 a plurality of 1,104; but the Repub licans are hopeful of carrying it this year against the man who hates pro tection to American labor so intensely that he wants to see absolute free .trade and all the custom houses of the country abolished. WHAT INVENTIONS MAY DO. The possibilities of science when applied to the industrial arts are so great that careful people hesitate to state them for fear of exciting ridi oule. So, in many articles published a humorous turn has been given to some of the possible results of inven tions in these days. "Were a man of the seventeenth century to have been told that water would be supplied to every house by means of pipes, that a combustible gas would be distributed in a similar manner from a central reservoir, that messages would be sent across con tinents and under oceans in a few minutes, he would have set down his informant as a lunatic, or, at best, the very wildest of dreamers. The man of to-day would be quite as in credulous if told what inventions and applications of science may do for the people of 1984. One writer ventures to predict that in the twentieth century electricity "will accomplish marvels which now seem too absurd to seriously set forth. Chops and steaks will be cooked by electric sparks so as to make the Frenchman's cotelette a la minute a reality. The fruits of the earth will be multiplied enormously by the use of electric light behind colored glass. Fruits and vegetables will be grown all the year round, win ter and summer, day and night, so that the field which now produces a hundred bushels of any product will yield ten thousand. We now cook our food, but take our air and water Taw, and through these two elements come all the disorders and contagious .which afflict humanity. In the future water will bo distilled and prepared for human use, and thereby purified from all germs of disease, while air will not be breathed by human beings until it has been cleaned of all noxiou3 qualities, after which it will be ad mitted to the glass-covered streets and dwellings in which the man of the future will live. Houses and places of business will be situated in immenso inclosed edifices, the air of which will not only be ren dered wholesome, but delightful to the sense of smell. Summer and winter, so far as extreme cold or ex treme heat is concerned, will be abolished, as the temperature can be controlled by artificial means, and all parts of the globe will be equally inhabitable. Day will have no at tractionsover night, for the artificial lights will be more pleasing than any which the great luminary of day can give its. Then, of course, the air will be navigated, which will help to change the appearance of the sur face of the earth, for the great cities will then be situated on healthful hilltops, instead of on the insalubri ous plains below. With the great motors shortly to be discovered, huge mountain chains which obstruct man's progress in any direction can be leveled, while the ice packs around the two poles can be lique fied and made navigable. All this seems wild enough, but no doubt very great changes will occur. If food can be produced by improved methods, with less cost, the problem of poverty is solved. If machinery continues to replace handwork, the hours of labor must be shortened, and its value increased: but to accom plish this, a social revolution will be needed, by which labor-saving ma chines will be worked for the benefit of the laborer, and not in competition with him. Thebe is a conflict of authority iu California, and the wonder is that that question didn't come up years ago. The federal judges have decided that a child born of Chinese parents in this country is entitled to all the privileges of the public schools. Chi nese residents of San Francisco de mand that their children be admitted. The stale superintendent of public instruction refuses to allow it. It is to be hoped that he will have sand enough to stay with this resolve. BiiAiXE never had a ruling reversed during his six years' service as speak er a record without a parallel, we believe, in the annals of congress; nor was any ruling ever assailed pub- iiciy or privately, wnen lie was speaker or since, on the score of par tiality or undue influence or improp er motives. Mn. Needles is running for con gress in Illinois, and just across the river, in Missoxiri, Mr. Pins is a can didate. They might pool their issues and uplift their voices in singing a stive of that old nursey rhyme, "Needles and Pins, Needles and Pius, when a man -stakes the caucus his trouble begins." It is said that wheat could "be shipped from Dnluth to New York this season for five cents a bushel, which is les3 than Chicago's cheapest rate. How are the trunk liucs to compete with this? TnitEE men in Illinois have gone in sane on the subject of politics. If the campaign lasted a few months longer stump speakers would be obliged to address lunatic asylums if they wanted to secure an audience. It is now rumored that Belva Lockwood made three gallons of apple-butler, baked a large batch of doughnuts, and wrote her letter of acceptance all in the same day. m i In the opinion of the British man ufacturer, the wholo manufacturing industry of the United States, em ploying 5,000,000 persons, is a nuis ance and ought to bo abated. The latest novelty in the boot and shoe trade is a rubber boot with a solid leather bottom on it Notice. BIDS FOR THE BUILDING OF A dwelling house iu Astoria, for J.
