London, Oct. 11. An ultimatum
Las been sent 0 tbo Transvaal gov
ernmeut ly Great Britain. It alleges
thai repeated violations of the treaty
and acts of violence have been com
mitted by Boers beyond the boundary
lines of "the Transvaal country, and
it demands of the Transvaal govern
ment due satisfaction for these acts,
repression of Boer filibusters, and a
thorough observance of the articles
of the last convention entered into
by both countries. It is reported the
British -war office is already preparing
an expedition of 8,000 troops into
South Africa, The withdrawal of
the proclamation "annexing the Mont
cias territory is not expected to alter
the position'of affairs, as tho Boefs
continue lo hold a grip upon the
lands.

New York, Oct 1L The Herahra
cable special gives an account of the
reception given Mr. Joy, president of
the Wabash road, by the London
bondholders. It says: His apologetic
speech was often interrupted. At
times there was an uproar, and cries
of "Gould's man," and "no, no," and
finally Joy sat down, baffled. Kussell
Boberts, barrister, severely criticised
Joy. There were immenso cheers
when he termed Jay Gould an arch
fiend and robber. Mr. Tonnley
spoke, calling Joy the creature of
Gould, and said his plan was a well
considered plot of robbery.
ENGLAND AND GUINEA
London, Oct. 11. Tho decision of
Gladstone that a protectorate should
be established over Guinea was hast
ened by reports sent to the British
colonial office of the great increase of
the slave trade upon the coast. Sev
eral vessels from Queensland have
been receiving natives, and one inci-,
dent in connection therewith is re
lated, in which the creus of some
trading vessels seized thirty natives.
The British gunboat Swinger cap
tured a slave schooner and sent tho
vessel and crew to Cooktown. where
the latter will be tried.
RUSSIAN VS. AMERICAN PETROLEUM.
London, Oct 1L Tho Times says:
"Russia has not only driven American
potroleum from Russia, bnt has also
bcu celling crude oil to Austrian re
finers, and making a determined ef
forl to obtain a foothold in Eastern
Germany. The first train of German
car tanks, containing Russian petro
leum, lately arrived at Gaudenz, on
the frontier. It is estimated that
petroleum by this route will be one
shilling per fifty kilometres cheaper
in tho Berlin market than American
oil.
GREAT BRITAIN TO SEIZE NEW GUINEA.
London, Oct 11. Tho British
commodore on the Australian station
has been instructed to proceed to
Xew Guinea and proclaim a British
protectorate over the southern coast
of that island, to the eastward of the
111st meridian, east longitude. Tho
protectorate will include the island
adjacent, southern New Guinea. Set
tlement within the protectorate will
not bo at present permitted.

A young lad of about sixteen sum
mers married a girl recently in Lum
kin, Ga., and applied for a divorce in
less than thirty days.
Three Norristown cigar dealers
who were fined for violating tho Sun
day law revenged themselves by pay
ing their fines in pennies.
Boston is considering the feasi
bility of a one-rail elevated railway
that is claimed will make a hundred
miles an hour easy traveling.
A diphtheretic child in Baltimore
coughed recently in tho face of Dr.
Melville Taylor, and he died of diph
theria himself a few days later.
A young lady of Milwaukee has"
just recovered 33,000 in a breach of
promise suit "for expense incurred in
preparing tho wedding and for great
mental auguish suffered."
The Missouri father d"id not pursue
his eloping daughter, but sent a
clergyman on a swift horse to over
take the couple, in 'order that tha
marriage ceremony might be per-

Joe Boirard. an Arkansas nprrrn

mained suspended to the gallows for

The great oil well near Butler City,
Penn., has gained fresh notoriety
from the fact that gas is escaping
from it at tho rate of "a mile a min
ute," and is so thick ct times as to
resemble crouds of steam from a
boiler.
Chicago complains of filthy streets,
notwithstanding 250 miles per month
have been cleaned thus far. Owing
to a deficit in the appropriation,
street-cleaning will hereafter be re
duced to the minimum of 200 mile3
per month.
It camo out in a recent Tennessee
lawsuit that the ardent letters sent
by a girl to her lover had been com
osed for another fellow, but that, on
tranefering her affections suddenly,
she had erased the original name and
inserted a new one.

at the same port since Jauuary will

At a wake at Verona, Ohio, several
men got drunk and broke down the
bed which contained the corpse,
and afterward endeavored to force
liqnor down the throat of the dead
body. Failing in this they threw
whisky over the dead corpse and
then departed.
