Nothing so cements and. holds to gether in union all the parts of a society as faith or credit; which can never bo kept tip, unless men are under some force or necessity of hon estly paying what they owe to one another. Cicero. What a vast amount of time and ease that man gains who is not troub led with tho spirit of impertinent curiosity about others; who lets his neighbor's thoughts and behavior alone; who confines his inspections to himself, and cares chiefly for his own duty and conscience. Latater. The only way for a rich man to bo healthy is by exercise and abstinence, to live a3 if he was poor; which are esteemed the worst parts of povertv. Sir W. Tem-ph. We can be thankful to a friend for a few acres, or a little money, and yet ror the ireeuom and command of the whole earth, and for the great bene fits of our being, our life, health and reason, we look upon ourselves as un der no obligations. Senega. nothing hinders the constant agreement of people who live togeth er but vanity aud selfishness. Let the spirit of bsnevolonce and humili ty prevail and discord and disagree ment would be banished from the household. Coltoji. Defect in manners is usnallv the defect in fine perceptions. Elegance comes of no breeding, but of birth- Emerson. There should be, methinks, as lit tle merit in loviug a woman ior her beauty as in loving a man for his prosperity; both being equally sub ject to change. -Shemtone. Keenness in a man is not always to be taken in a man as a sign of capac ity, for it is generally observed most in those who aro selfish and over reaching; and his keenness generally ends in that kind of penetration into other people's interests which will tend to benefit his own. A. AT. Arnold. Were it left for mo to decide wheth er we should have a government without newspapers, or newspapers without a government, I should not hesitate to prefer the latter. T. Jef ferson. The French Whip the Chinese. Paris, Oct. 9. A dispatch from Hanoi states that Gen. Negrier's col umn had an engagement at the vil lage of Kep with G000 Chinese regu lars, who occupied entrenchments around the central redoubt. The Chinese commenced the attack at 9 a. ar., by trying to surround the French. Fighting lasted until 2 v. jr., when the retreat of tho Chinese to ward tho frontier of China was cut off. Tho Chinese troops then fled in the direction of Das Guau, pursued by the French. Tho Kep garrison defended their position bravely, com pelling the French to surround tho redoubt and carry it at tho point of the bayonet. Of tho Chinese in the village alone GOO were killed. The French fought with spirit and decision. They captured the enemy's war material, mules and horses. A French captain and twenty men were killed, and two officers and fifty men wounded. Gen. Xegrier was slightly wonndecL Gen. Brier DeLislo has started for Kep to assist Negrier's forces. Gen. Brier DeLislo has telegraphed the government confirming tho report announced from Hanoi yesterday, of tho engagement between the French and Chinese in the valley of Foo Chaun rive, in Tonquin. Tho en counter took place on Monday. The Chinese aro attempting to execute an offensive movement on the upper Foo Chaun river. They have lost 1,000 men. Capt. Deynet, of the French foreign legion, was killed, and Lieut Baitelle wounded. Gen. Negrier's column has gone up tho Phulalang river to cnt off tho retreat of the Chinese.
