ASTORIA, OREGON:
SATURDAY OCTOBER 11. 1SSJ
Ben Butler is a grandfather.
. Mb. Blaise wears a No. 8 shoo.
Govebxob CLEVELAND seldom
jokes.
Jefpebsok Davis is now the last of J
his line.
The Butler boom begins to sound
like a dull thud.
Gekebaii Shermax occasionally
attends the oircus.
Sitting Bum. smokes a pipe over
two feet in length.
Me. St. John is not in favor of
brass bands. He does not approve of
anything that goes on a "toot"
A Cincinnati waiter is running for
congress, and it is predicted that he
will carry everything before him.
Kussia is massing troops near
Merv, and reports from India say
she will soon declare a protectorate
over Persia.
A total of 118,G93 cotton looms
and 4,763,000 spindles are shutdown
in New England on account of over
stocked markets.
Campaign documents are being
distributed broadcast throughout
the country, which is why the rag
picker rejoices and waxes fat.
Both parties are on a still hunt in
Florida. A still hunt is a very good
thing where the game is bear and
yon don't want it to find you.
77IT seems hardly possible that any
new lie will be started between now
and the 4th pros., but marvellous are
the resources of political ingenuity.
Newspapers and narrow-gauge
railroads arc rapidly increasing in
Texas, and patriotic Texans regard
the increase of each as a good omen.
Gexeratj Grant now regrets that
he had not adopted literature as a
profession in early life. Ho finds
$50,000 a very snug little sum for a
few magazine articles.
Sib Moses Moxtefiobe, the emin
ent Hebrew, is in excellent health,
and services will be held in the syn
agogues all over Europe on the 26th
and 27th in honor of his centenary.
The great German political parties
are alarmed at the possible success
of the socialists in the coming elec
tions. Bismarck thinlcs the law po
tent enough to keep them within
bounds.
In Pennsylvania no man can vote
who has not paid a state or county
tax within two years previous to the
election. The tax must be paid not
less than thirty days before the elec
tion. There is no escape from this
law.
The financial writers of the Lon
don press have recently come to a
conclusion which has been steadfast
ly maintained for several years by the
tramps of our own fair land, namely,
that there is too little gold to go
around.
A Connecticut judge, week before
last, sentenced a man to four years in
the penitentiary for living in illicit
relations with a woman who was the
undivorced wife of another man.
Other states need laws which author
ize such sentences.
It is solemnly stated that Mr.
Hendricks sat on a stool at a railroad
station in Buffalo the other day and
ate a sandwich. Had ha sat on a
railroad station and ate a stool his
great feat would have gone booming
down the corridors of time.
For the past seven months the im
ports of wheat into Great Britain
were 24,956,33i centals. The United
States furnished 13,773,9S0 centals,
a little over one-half; India less than
one sixth, Russia about one-tenth,
and Australia less than one-tenth.
Talking of all the pseudo "gener
als' on both territorial tickets, the
Olympia Standard says: "The mili
tary nominations made by both par
ties are ornamental appendages for
which we can see no possible use.
They are like the stops on some of
the cheap organs which usually ter
minate in a block of wood.
Yankee enterprise is again illus
trated by a story which comes from
New England. The state of New
Hampshire pays a bounty of ten
cents apiece for crows' heads, and a
bright boy across the Massachusetts
line has been making money by
shooting crows and selling the heads
for several cents apiece to a New
Hampshire jobber in the same ar
ticle. Judging from the croaking of the
English press, particularly the Pall
Mall Gazette, the British navy is go
ing down. The ships are no longer
hearts of oak, nor jolly tars her men
With the pigtail of the past has
gone the spirit of Trafalgar. Britan
nia no longer rules the waves. Has
the dry-rot which has sapped the life
out of our navy proved contagious to
the British? Has iron proved too
strong for England's naval blood?
Does she pine'for the hart that bore
her to deeds of conquest? The mod
em style of navy may be a mistake.
A sub-marine navy is wanted, some
thing that, keeping out of sight, will
blow up creation. The coming ship
will be very like a whale.
NEW TO-DAY.
