"f" ". ""5"" It Mt ii$ IMtorian. ASTORIA, OREGON: TUESDAY OCTOBER 7. ISM IMPROVING THE BAR. "Wobk on the bar -will not be begun till the question of present prece dence between the civil and army en gineers is decided. The'plan of oper ations, it is thought, -will be modified. The preliminary building of a track, etc., from Ft Stevens to the point of beginning the work proper will prob ably take all the available portion of nest season, and the greater part of the $100,000 appropriated. It is thought by many who have given the subject careful observation that a double row of piles with fas cines between would be tho most ef fective style of jetty that could be devised. It is claimed that any at tempt to use stone will be too expen sive and unsatisfactory, and that the action of the water at Ft Stevens, and the wind and water together at Pt Adams and Clatsop spit are suffi cient indication of the course to be pursued. It is argued that the way the shore at Ft Stevens is constantly making out shows that the building of snch a structure as suggested would receive all the aid that the trend of the south channel current would afford, while the effect of the outside current would bo to pile the sand against this double wall in a solider and more enduring barrer than could bo possibly afforded by riprap or stone foundation. The great force of the erosive storms from November to April sug gests the desirability of two rows of double piles, a proper distance apart, that the force of the waves may be checked and distributed before the erosion of the current would tend to destroy or isolate tho end of the jetty. In further commendation of this plan it is argued that the cross cur rent would inevitably push Sand island to the north and thus mate rially aid in the end desired the formation of one stright, deep chan nel with an ocean bar. Clatsop spit is an accumulation of sand caused by southerly winds and currents; the bar a deposit of silt and sand settling at a point where the two great forces of the tide and river cur rent meet and spend their forces against each other. The strengthen ing and extending of Clatsop spit, so as to narrow the entrance, is the idea; to make the south side of the stream as solid and enduring would be the ideal. The nearer that ideal can be approached the better will be the condition of the Columbia bar. A rniEND -writes from Pacific coun ty renewing his subscription and say ing that in his judgment there is too much politics in The Astobian. He is right There is tgo much politics in The Astorian, three times as much as we would like to see in it, but the same is true of every daily paper in the United States that is not purely a trade or commercial journal. It can't very well be helped. To ninety-nine out of a hundred who read this paper it is of far more im portance to them to know if salmon or logs are likely to advance in price than it is to read that the Hon. Jones said to the Hon. Smith that if the Hon. Brown had carried the 77th Ohio congressional district, the majority for Blaine would be at least 316 more than it will be, and yet all that stuff is sent on a wire 2,000 miles and dumped here in Astoria and called "news," and is published. Sometime maybe in a couple of hundred years tho newspapers will have more backbone and refuse to print columns of bosh; just at present the excuse is: "They all do it," and the tide rolls on. Ts his little speech to the Brooklyn young Republicans, Mr. Blaine was shrewd enough to say that he knew the value of young men. The Plumed Knight is a wise general. Young men are enthusiastic. They never know when they are beaten. Gallant Phil. Kearney preferred a regiment of young men to a brigade of old grumblers. Girls allrecognize the value of young men, and where the girls go the young men are sure to follow. Grover should cultivate the girls. The last state fair was a complete fizzle. The receipts were only S7,000, less than half that of last year. Those "who were awarded premiums received nothing but scrip, and gen eral dissatisfaction prevails. There is some talk of asking for a state ap propriation. This should not be. The state has enough to do now wilhont being asked to infuse life into a concern that hasn't vitality enough to keep it alive. There are 14,867 newspapers and magazines published in the United States and the British provinces. Total in the United States, 14,176; in 'the British provinces,691; divided as follews: Dailies, 1,357; tri-weeklies, 71; semi-weeklies, 168; Sundays, 295; weeklies, 10,085; bi-weeklies, 39; monthlies, 1,502; bi-monthlies, 26; quarterlies, 83; showing an increase over the publications of 1883 of 1, 594. St. Augustine, Fla., proposes to celebrate the anniversary of the land ing of Ponce de Leon in 1512, and at the same time to commemorate the founding of the city in 1565, by a demonstration on the 27th of March, 1885. A Washington dispatch says that tho busiest place at the capital now, aside from the political headquarters, is the supremo court-room. This is interesting if true, and if this extra ordinary activity shall prevail during the next five years, the cases entered now may be disposed of by 1890. The reported drowning of 70,000 persons by a recent flood in China re calls the flood caused by the breaking of the dikes in Holland in 1530,which swept away 400,000 persons, or the one before that in the same country, from the same cause, in 1421, when over 100,000 people perished. In Vermont lithographic prescrip tions for cocktails are used. They read as follows, "K. Spir. Frument, 2 fl. oz. Ext Angos dr. Syr. Simp fl. oz. They are put up by drug gists, who charge from 20 to 50 cents a prescription. Much sickness is said to prevail ... i- A newspaper published in a small summer resort on the Somersetshire coast of England, increased its rev enue during tho late season by charg ing threepence for using the title "Esq." at the end of a visitor's name "cash invariably in advance." The new batch of Alabama claims, amounting to about S2,500,000, have all been paid. It is estimated that there are about $5,000,000 more in unsettled claims, which would leave $5,500,000 in the treasury. . .i i m i m i Don Pedro H, Emperor of Brazil, while returning from a naval review, had a narrow escape from drowning. The boat which he was in capsized, but he was rescued. Mb. Hendricks' books show a lit tle matter that perhaps he had just as lieve keep shady. "Curses, like chickens, come home to roost." The publishers of Blaine's book have just put to press the fourth edition of 50,000 copies. "Wno is the Democratic candidate for United States senator to succeed Slater?
