The Vancouver Independent re lates'the following thrilling incident: One day last week Mrs. W. K Lee discovered a beat swimming in the Columbia, and determined on its cap ture. The men folks were all away, but she summoned a posse, including the children, a boat and a dog", and armed with- a butcher-knife, attempt ed to prevent a landing, while one of the children went after a neighbor who had a gun. The bear landed and showed, fight. Mrs. Lee was treed once on a big rock, but gave chase again as the bear tried to make off. The bear turned on her again, and in retreating she tripped on a stick and went down, when the bear made a ferocious attack. She struck with the knife, and slashed it so se verely on the nose that it went'howl ing away long enough for her to re gain her feet, and the dog attacked so vigorous she made good her escape. About this time the man with the gun stetled the contest, and tor severfl days bear steaks were plenty in the neighborhood. Mrs. Lee showed great courage in this contest, and de served a bigger Bhare of the bear than she received. 1 1 1 "- Some papers won't believe that a country editor in this state had his pocket picked of $28, and. insist that the plunder consisted of a railroad pass, a patent medicine ad. and a due bill for eighty-eight cents on a hard ware store.
