the three quarters ended September

Commenting on these figures tho
Bulletin says: "Great stress has
been laid in trade circles over the loss
of northern trade since the opening
01 I he .Northern Pacihc railroad, by
which portions of Oregon and Wash
ington territory have been placed in
direct rail connection with the Atlan
tic states. So far this has not been
attended with all the benefits expect
ed. The same thing has happened to
the north that happened to Califor
nia, upon tho completion of it3 first
overland railway connections, 'ine
event was discounted some time in
advance by overtrading, with the in
evitable result which always follows
that sort of thine. Oregon and
"Washington territory have been pass
ing through similar experience in the
past year. The markets there have
been glutted with eastern merchan
dise. The heavy stocks carried at
the north have been in excess of the
demand, and the difficulty in getting
rid of these stocks at a profit and for
cash has brought trouble upon Ore
gon and "Washington territory mer
chants. "While the number of fail
ures in California this year is 14 per
cent larger than last year, in Oregon
there has been an increase of 208 per
cent, and in "Washington territory
2l4 per cent.
An Anecdote of Lincoln and Davis.
Judge David Daviswho for eight
years rode the same judicial circuit
in Illinois with Abraham Lincoln,
relates many capital anecdotes about
him. One was a scene in conrt soon
after Davis was appointed judge,
whjen a fellow named Lindsay had
been indicted for highway robbery.
Lindsay had pleaded guilty, in tho
hopo that the court would give him
the lightest sentence imposed by law.
The crime, however, had no lenient
features, and the character of its per
petrator was very bad. At the close
of the term Lindsay was arraigned
forsentenee. The judge alluded to
the youth of the prisoner, and dwelt
upon tho enormity of his crime. He
had robbed a helpless man of his
hard-earned wages, and committed a
crime that tho law characterized as
akin to murder. Gathering wrath
and indignation as he proceeded, the
judge closed his philippic with the
werds: "Lindsay, I sentence you to
seven years in the Illinois legis
lature?" -
Abraham Lincoln was a quiet ob
server. He arose with a quaint gleam
of humor in his face, and said: "May
it please your honor, as the friend of
the coart, allow me to suggest that
the constitution does not permit cruel
and unusual punishment Your
honor has sent this man to the legis
lature when he ought to go to the
penitentiary."
"The difference is so slight that the
court has no hesitation in adopting
the suggestion of its learned and ex
perienced adviser, tho judge re
sponded. Thereupon he imposed the
full sentence of the law, and every
body laughed except the defendant
and his counsel. Sen. Perley Poore.
This is the time of the year when
the stove-pipe joke comes out The
stove-pipe joke is always on the man
who doesn't get the "silker" won on
election.

BENSON'S CAPCLVE POROUS PLASTER

especially for tho profession, tho Benson's

however, of its merits as a remedy, in cases
of Lame Back, Local Rheumatism, Neural
