C?3 fa gatttj gtftotfw. ASTORIA, OREGON: TUESDAY, ,.bEPTEMBER30. IBM xHE campaign of the future may be conducted through the telephone. Then, as now, it will be principally sound. Mb. Beeches said last Sunday he .tf wholly repudiated helL It is not - -known -whether the compliment will . be returned. Now it is said that Belva Lockwood "lis not eligible to the presidency, be cause she isn't old enough. We be lieve this to be a base slander. . - ' A man at Camden, N. J., makes it bis business to walk up and down the streets and look for lost wallets. He has been at it thirteen years and found about $10, but as his wife sup ports him by washing he is $10 ahead. A PECtTDiAE case that is puzzling the physicians of Cohoes, N. Y., is than of Thomas Winterson, whose toes recently commenced to decay one by one until they are now all gone. The disease has now begun to cut away his feet. A leading dry goods dealer of Buffalo says: "I never knew a wo man who handled other people's mon ey to steal one cent I have employ ed women as cashiers for years. They are quicker at making change than men; they will detect counterfeit money quicker; they keep their cash accounts clearer, and they don't want u to run the whole store, as men do." The United States commissioner of agriculture -ias presented to the r British minister at Washington a re port in which it is stated, regarding the butter of New York, that out of 100,000,000 pounds sold annually in New York city, between 40,000,000 and 60,000,000 pounds are bogus. Oleomargarine has, it is said, cut down the price of average butter to 30 cents a pound, involving a loss of 84,000,000 annually to farmers. The Ohio canvass is described as "red-hot" at present, the Kepublican managers making active torch, brass band and oratorical demonstrations, with the view of bringing out lethargic voters, who are assumed to be Repub licans. If they can be gotten out, the state, it is claimed, is safe for Blaine in October by from 20,000 to 25,000 ma jority, and by a larger majority in November. Tho Democratic canvass is described as a "still-hunt." Through a friend we have heard of a dirty diatribe in The Astobian, al though we have not seen it. It was printed in the daily but suppressed in the weekly, which latter is sent us in exchange. Will some kind friend at Astoria send us the daily referred to if it can be procured? East Port land Vindicator. The Astorian is not in the habit of printing "dirty diatribes." nor of "suppressing" items from the weekly that appear in the daily. We haven't the slightest idea what the Vindica tor is driving at, but are of the opinion that it is barking up the wrong tree. General Gordon, whom a British army is on its way to rescue, has-been heard from, and, so far from being in danger of defeat at the hands of the Mahdi, is projecting the burning of Berber as a little diversion. Berber would be called "quite a place" in America. On the Nile it is to Khar toum, where Gordon is, wbat Yicks burg might be to Memphis, on the Mississippi Pretty work, surely, for a nation like England sending out an army to rescue a man who is so well able to take care of himself that he can make preparations for burning a city 200 miles awayJ It is given to French journals, as sometimes to American papers, to ganeralize a little too quickly. Some Parisian papers have resented hasty American comments on the bombard ment of Poo-Chow. Let them be of good cheer. The sentiment of the press and people of the United States ,is one of the warmest sympathy ior tne sister republic of the old world. France commanded Ameri can admiration in the days of her deepest misfortunes, and with her great flag waving over a free, and prosperous people she has lost no tit tle of the olden esteem which for over ' a century bas drawn the two nations' hearts together across three thousand , miles of sea. - Bichabd Cobdek was a splendid development of the commercial trav eler. He saw with prophetic eye the , ttfpassing influence which the United 4t States was to exert in changing tho conditions of international trade competition. "Writing in 1835, before he liad qntered upon the agitation ZlotAhe repeal of the corn laws. Mr. iCoVden. declared that it tmb hv tim uladtMiby and peaceful economy of America, and not by the efforts of ftbarbarian foree, that the power and greath6ss of England were in danger ot being superseded; by the success- , fulfc rivalry of America JSngland was "in all probability" to be jplaced sec- ond.in'ftie rank of nations. It was .pointed out how, through the domin ion of steam, onr vast territory was tor all, the purposes of commercial prjsocial intercourse to be compress ect intoan area sufficiently small to be wielded with the most telling ef fect. .In, a phrase, Cobden looked to 8 period '-when the United States would dictate terms to the commer cial and manufacturing nations of the world. ConsidebabiiE is going on regard ing the wisdom of Villard's direction of the Northern Pacific railroad. Details aside, Yillard is said to have made two mistakes. When he turned from his success in getting a big profit for his capitalist associates out of the Oregon Navigation deal to the Northern Pacific the financial tide had just begun to decline. In the Oregon Navigation movement the same tide was taken at the flood. The ebb-tide followed and the bears lay in waiting. The second mistake was in permitting a poetic vision re garding the development of the coun try through which the Northern Pa cific was to pass for the calculation of the man of business. The sales of land have been away below expec tations, and altogether the fulfillment of the vision is yet far ahead. To make matters worse, the tendency for the next few years in Dakota can hardly fail to bo toward a restricted wheat acreage. -Wise business cal-1 culations are coming to be more and more made upon outside facts. A great outside fact, when flushed with success Villard undertook to con struct a "system," was tne growing foreign competition in grain-growing. The new Dakota farmer was not the old-time man of pastoral pursuits merely;"insteadawheat manufactur er had appeared. It is this wheat-grow er on a big scale who is peculiarly affected by "a drop in wheat' His prosperity is that of the Northern Pacific Railroad and his depression is that of ther holders of the railway's shires.
