CARICATURE IN POLITICS.
Pcck, for this -week lias a funny
caricature of Blaine and some of his
ardent supporters, in which great
sport is made of the Plumed Knight
and his adherents. Caricature has a
prominent place in the present pres
idential campaign.
Caricature at best is exaggeration
of facts, distortion of the real; and,
though it be understood that the first
object is ministration to publio hu
mor, it is no less manifest that a
deeper design may be direct and
positive injury to a man or to a cause.
And, -while the spirit of fun is
provoked in some readers at the
sight, the spirit of resentment and
hatred is no less aroused in others.
Excess of caricature is therefore a
vice, although robed in the garments
of the clown. It seenu to us that
the time has come to call a serious
halt in the progress of this mode of
argument in the present season. And
an unmistakable protest should be
made on the part of all good citizens,
of whatever party or opinion, against
the extravagant and vicious degree to
which this spirit is likely to run.
This is no moody criticism. We
stand up to the last for good, honest,
genuine fun. Let us all laugh. Let
us laugh at the whimsicalities and
peculiarities of our fellows, where it
will do no one any harm. It is better
to laugh than to mope, to sneer, or to
curse. But let us curb our laughter
at the point" where it is wrought into
a poniard to stab or a sword to slay
the truth, the virtue, or the charac
ter of our fellow-men. For gross
caricature, as a political weapon, may
become a dangerous device.
PARTISANSHIP.
There is not one of us who is not
liable to this disease. It is in the air.
The pestilence will grow worse till
November. Be on your guard against
the first approaches of it. Be chari
table toward all political opponents;
study to think the best, not the worst,
of them. All is not fair in war. The
means do not justify the end. An
honorable man is no match for the
adversary with his own weapons.
Fight fire with water. The purity of
your party is worth more than its
triumph. Honor is worth more than
victory. Be suspicious of suspicions.
Search for good motives, not for evil
ones. A presidential election is not a
war, but a deliberation. This is not a
political campaign, but a political
parliament Half the nation is not in
arms against the other half. There
are evil elements in all parties and
honorable elements in all parties.
Look about you. Have you not
among your acquaintances a Butler
man, a Cleveland man, a Blaine man?
He is not a thief nor a vagabond. He
is not a Catiline nor a Benedict Ar
nold. If half the country were the
rascals which the other half of the
country would have us believe them
to be, there would be little hope for
its future. The great heart of the
American people is honest, true, pa
triotic. Have faith in it Be proud as
you will of your party, but be prouder
still of your country.
A Belgian duel, in which the prin
cipals fought at six paces, and one
was mortally wounded, is likely to
cause a revolution in this barbarous
practice. Duels a Voutrance are no
longer fashionable. Indeed, entire
reform in this matter is called for.
Shillelahs at close quarters are well
enough for electioneering purposes,
but they are scarcely aesthetic. Clubs
might answer. Cowhides are vulgar,
canes light Horsewhips have their
advantages, but there really is no
necessity for the duello at alL No
gentleman will insult another, and
the insult of a cur does not count

Look in your hand, and if you are
married, or if you are going to be,
you will see that the thin parallel
lines form a perfect letter M. If you
have no such letter there you will
live and die an old maid or bachelor,
as the case may be. In some hands
it is so distinct that it resembles a
brand.
The "Working-women's Protective
Union of New York has spent in the
twenty years of its existence $65,000
to conduct 7,000 prosecutions for
frauds upon working girls. In this
way 25,000 of wages have been col
lected that never would have been
paid otherwise.
Lieut. Geeely reports that the
mean or average temperature for the
whole year at his observing station
was five degrees below zero. That is.
no doubt the coldest plaoe ever occu
pied by man for any extended period.

Ohio is in a very uncertain condi
tion. The only rock-sure thing about
her is that neither the Bepublicans
.nor the Democrats will be happy un
less they can scare the rest of the
country into remittance.

don in twenty-three minutes. It
went by land and sea, over 13,308
