THE NEW BRUNSWICK BANK.
How it Was Used by a Ring of Political
and Financial Triclcsters.
New Yokk, Sept. 16. A Times spec
ial Las the follewing: Mayor "Wil
liam Strong to-day gave an interest
ing history of tho inner working of
the ring which has been running the
officers of tho New Brunswick Bank
for the past twelve or fifteen years,
and which is now dissolved by the
death of its tool, Charles Hill, the
cashier. It was composed, among
others, of Joseph E. Fisher, L.D.
Jarrard, Charles H. Hill, and Bobt.
G. Miller. Of these, Fisher is an out
cast, Jarrard is serving a term in the
Trenton State Prison, Hill is now in
the grave, and Miller is pratically a
nonentity, owing to developments in
his trial for the misappropriation of
28,000 of the city's funds, on which
he escaned through a technicality.
Mayor Strong said there has proba
bly never been such an uninterrupted
succession of political crimes ana
municipal dishonssty as is shown by
the ODerations of this set of worthies.
They were first brought into notice at
the time of the suicide of city treas
urer Croft, six vears aco, and went
without discoverv until long after
SIOO.OOO of tho city's funds had disap
neared into their Dockets. Their op
erations were the same in kind as
those which have been carried on
since Croft's death. The revelations
havo shown that ono of the most
nrofitable methods employed was to
ostensibly discount the notes of the
city at 50 cents on the dollar, and di
vide a handsome surplus. The reve
nue of the city is $94,000 per annum;
its expenditures SHO.OOO. This deficit
has been going on for many years.
The credit of the city was not of the
best, and it was necessary to employ
the services of a bank to carry it on.
The suspended bank was chosen en
tirely on account of Hill's connection
with it. The ring of which Hill was
the tool had first got its clutcnes on
him through political manipulation.
They controlled the primaries and
bought elections, and purchase mon
ey for the necessary votes was fur
nished by Hill. The ring thus got
him into their power, and when he
was inclined to draw back they put
the screws on by threatening expos
ure. Henceforth he was their willing
but not active instrument.
According to the Times its reporter
had a narrow escapo fron tho New
UrunBwick mob, when word was pass
ed out to the crowd blockading the
street in front of the bank that Bun
yon had killed himself, and it was
also announced that he first knew of
his condition being made public
through tho Times. ''He read the
Times and then shot himself, said
the crowd, when some of the bullies
and desperate men who wero deposit
ors in the bank and failed to obtain
their balances raised the cry: "If it
hadn't been for tho 'Times he'd been
alive." A block below the bank a
rush was made for the Times report
er, but edging his thin body into a
doorway he argued so convincingly
with his assailants that the Times
only did its duty in exposing what
would be known when the examiner
was through, that the crowd good
naturedly allowed him to scoot away.
The Times also gives additional de
tails of President Bunyon's suicide:
"While the notice of the bank's sus
pension was being posted, Buhyon
stepped into a closet of about four
by six feet dimensions, removed his
coat and waistcoat and set his watch
with the face open in the window
sill, edging it up with the piece of
paper; then taking a penknife with a
ragged edge in his left hand, he de
liberately made two deep gashes in
tho right arm at the elbow joint, sev
ering the basilar artery. Changing
the knife to the right hand he gashed
the left arm in the same manner.
Evidently his eyes were fixed on the
watch. He saw he would be discov
ered before death came by so slow a
process, when he deliberately took
again the knife and on the right side
of tho neck laid bare the common
carotid artery. Changing tho knife
to the other hand he cut open the
leftside of tho throat to the bone,
and severed the jugular vein. Death
came and speedily took the desperate
man. His eyes were fixed on the di
al of the watch.

Messts. Seaburt & Joba-sox,
Gentlemen: Like most of my profession, I
am cautious about pinning my faith to any
new medicine or curative agent. But your
BENSON'S CAPCINE POROUS PLASTER
ha3 broken through tho barriers and won its
way to my good opinion. My attention was
first called to it somo eight months ago by a
patient of mino Although I was well ac
quainted with tho superior oxcellonco of your
other plaster and antisoptic dressing, made
especially for tho profession, tho Bonson's
was comparatively now to me. I had heard,
however, of itsmcrit3 as a remedy, in cases
of Lama Back, Local Rhoumatism, Neural
gia. Congestion of the Bronchial Tubes and
Lungs. Dyspepsia, Torpid Liver and the like
affections, and havo sinco begun to experi
ment with it personally. I find BENSON'S
CAPCINE PLASTER an exceptionally clean
ly plaster to uso. and rapid in its action.
Many tests of its qualities, made in my own
family and among my patients havo convinc
ed mo that there is no single article so valu
able for popujar uso, nor so helpful in tho
diseases I havo named.
Should you desiro to do so, you may uso my
