tz $fa gmttj atartatt. ASTOBIA, OEEGON: WEDNESDAY SEPTEMBER 10, lS&i THE AWARD. Judge Deadt awards sixty-four thousand dollars to the citizens of Astoria and vicinity -whose skill and courage promptly rendered one year ago saved the Queen of the Pacific. None are .forgotten who helped make the saving a success; all are remembered in praise and substantial benefit and apart from the money compensation comes a feeling of pride to those who took part that their efforts are adjudged to be of value. Judge Deady's de cision is an equitable one and was only made after long and careful con sideration of the case, a case involv ing more of value than any similar suit ever before brought in any court on this coast The river is our only salvation, says The Dalles Times-Mountaineer, and with the removal of the impedi ments to navigation, a fleet of craft would soon cover the Columbia river and do the carrying trade at a much less rate than it is now done. But the query arises with some, since the completion of the through line of the Northern Pacific, if the people of the northwest will not look for an outlet to an eastern market rather than to one on our ocean seaboaad. We think this question will be an swered in the negative. Transporta tion by water is always cheaper, and we can more readily load a ship with wheat at Astoria or Portland for the Liverpool market than send grain to Chicago, and then take the circuitous route of the lakes tq.Bcland or any part of Europe. Hawawft manv rail. roads are built riversnever become idle, and as an example of the truth of this we might instance the Missis sippi, whose commerce is increasing every year, notwithstanding the net work of railways which course through the country along her danks. An English judge has decided that a kiss is not a legal "consideration." A surgeon in Lambeth kissed a work ingman's wife; the husband valued the kiss at 5, and the surgeon gave him an I 0 U for that amount. A month after date an action was brought on this document, but the judge promptly ruled there was no consideration and gave a verdict for the defendant. Thebe is great alarm at El Hedjas, Arabia, over the revolt of the Arabs. The disturbances are spreading. Eight thousand Arabs have sur rounded Yemen. The governor of Mecca was ordered to send troops to the town, but replied that he was un able, because of the disaffection of his own tribes. Eight thousand more troops will be sent from Constanti nople. Yokohama, Callao, Alexandria and now Poo Chow, have all been bom barded within the last fifteen or twenty years without a formal decla ration of war and without more than a few hours notice at the last mo ment. It is the way wars and acts of warfare come in these days of steam and telegraph. St. Augustine, Fla., was next month to have celebrated the 319th anniversary of its foundation, but has postponed it till March 27, 1885, which date will also be the anniver sary of the landing on the eastern coast of Ponce de Leon, in 1512, and the first settlement in the United States. Thebe were political speeches made in one hundred towns and cities in Indiana Angust 30th. It was the opening of the campaign. There is a bitter fight coming. It is Indiana's misfortune to be considered a doubt ful state. In political times its in habitants have to suffer. According to a Milwaukee statis tician, who is regarded as good au thority, the wheat product of this country the present year amounts to the prodigious aggregate of 530,000, 000 bushels, being 25,000,000 bushels more than ever produced in any pre vious year. As it has been decided in court that pauper immigrants cannot be sent back after having been permit ted to land, the New York commis sioners are compelled to keep a close watch at the sea entrance to Castle Garden.; American trade with China is small compared with England, but our own exports, which in 1883 were $4,080,000, are as large as those of France for the last year reported, al though our imports, $24,200,200, were only about half as great Chas. A. Dana, of the New York Sun, has a mushroom cave which yields enough for his own table, and - a surplus for sale which pays interest on the investment This accounts for the remarkable independence of the great editor. The Canadian Pacific road has laid Its tracks to a point seven miles west of the summit of the Eocky Moun tains, and hopes to reach the highest point of the Selkirk range this sea eon. Ben Butler's yearly earnings amount to 100,000, but the Louis ville Courier-Journal thinks "these are no thing, to his yearly yearnings." The treasurer of the United States has forwarded to fhfi povernor of Louisiana frffi-snlmol l-knnrlR nf that state to the amount of $21,000, which were captured at Baton Eonge by uen. snendan. it Thebe were ten gallons of liquor drank in this country last year for every man, woman and child in it It is believed some persons have been cheated out of their share. Maine gives the Bepublican state and congressional ticket 2,000 ma jority. All eyes are now turned to Ohio, whioh elects officers on Octo ber 14, In his official report Capt Merry cf the Tallapoosa casts the blame for the collision upon the schooner which sunk his ship. If Denis Kearney is really in ear nest, he will join the French army in China at once and do his level best Gen. ButiiEb wears a badge a red, red rose on a very green leat NEW TO-DAY. B. B.
