Every effort to organize a third party proves a failure; and there is a great body of unattached voters, -who, having no especial connection with either of the existing organizations, form a tremendous force, standing ready at all times to cast their votes for whichever party gives the best prom isewe do not mean the best paper resolutions or the strongest platform promises, but the best assurance of good government. This unattached body has no party name, no party organization, and no party leaders. It is composed of intellectual, patri otic, conservative citizens, who love order, who own property, who are engaged in business pursuits, who favor gradual progress, who are loyal to the Union, who are content to let well enough alone, and who seek no offices, nor opportunities to make money out of government employ. This class favors economy in all government expenditure, and demands integrity and lionest deal ing among officials. It is wise enough not to expect perfection in any party, and reasonable to favor any party that, on the whole, acts wisely and patriotically for the best interest of the whole country and all its people. This independent, conservative mid dle class is the controlling power in American politics. No party is, or has ever been, strong enough to ig nora No party can come to power without its vote, or remain in power having lost its confidence. The voters of this class are not biased by per sonal prejudice nor deceived by false testimony. They consider the history of the two parties, they weigh-the promises and measure the value of their pledges. They estimate the character of the candidates and in telligently express their opinion at the ballot box. Their votes decide the result Tee fusion of the Democrats and Greenbackers in Michigan, has one novel and interesting feature. A trial of comparative strength is to be made on a single presidential elector, while twelve electors are to be voted for by the two parties jointly. If, then, the fusion ticket carries the state, the electoral vote is to be di vided between Cleveland and Butler in the ratio in which the popular vote is divided on the thirteenth elector. The Democrats and Greenbackers will thus vote together against the Ke publicans for twelve electors, but, as they will split on the thirteenth, the Eepublicans are sure of one. Stonewall Jackson's war horse, a sorrel gelding, once fiery, but now with less oxygen in his windpipe, is cared for at the Virginia Military in stitute, to which school he belongs. The other day a lock of his mane was presented to the Tennessee Historical society. Not since the war has the old steed worn a bit, nor has he car ried a shoe. A unique custom is in vogue with some papers in Japan of employing parties in whoso name the journal is e3it3d, but whose sole occupation is to go to prison whenever the courts order that punishment for the editor! This is orthodox theology applied to journalism. Off the Gulf coast of Texas is the Padre island, containing 330,000 acres and owned by no man knows whom. There are scores of claimants to the title, some of whom have already in duced credulous Englishmen to sink $100,000 in ideal schemes of improve ment It is proposed to add to the terrors of arctic exploration by attempting to g6 there in a balloon. Until bal loons are fitted with better rudders, the navigator would have to be pro pared to land at the equator. What a fortunate thing it is that ministers are not born perfect; for, then, congregations could not have the tireless pleasure of grinding, pol ishing, and of sometimes resetting this kind of jewelery! Thus far this year the United Stales Fish Commission has distributed throughout the states and territories 120,000,000 whitefish, shad and fish of the salmon species, besides 12,000, 000 German carp. The "kazoo" is a new alleged mu sical instrument which bids fair to become as "unpopular as the accord ion, liot one of the candidates has yet been accused of playing the kazoo. In consequence of the recent fioods a new river has formed at the mouth of the Mississippi, which is said to be more important in size and depth than any stream south of the Bed rivar. ButxiEB believes that he is the most talked about man in the coun try. Ben's bump of self esteem is as big as an eggplant The treasury at Cairo is only 4,- , 000,000 short. The officials probably .played Pharoah on the banks of the Nile. In Japan, where cremation is regu larly practiced, it is said the most ex jaenaive form costs seven dollars. Hexdbioks is not as enthusiastic over his position on the ticket as his friends would like him to be. It is not pleasant for a first class musician to play second fiddle. MAUKIED.
