A light run of salmon is reported thus far at Tillamook, about 703 cases having been packed to date. Deputy City Treasurer Upshur is issu ing autographs to all who pay city taxes. Marion Hawkins, a single man, aged sixty, who came here some time ago from California, was yesterday adjudged in sane and goes to Salem. Divine service will be held by the Nor wegians in the Lutheran church of Up per Astoria, next Sunday, 7th inst., be ginning at 4 o'clock, v. si. On and after to-day the Miles will make two trips to the capo on Thursdays only. Upon her arrival here after the first trip she will remain three hours and then start on her second trip. At the thirty-second annual session of the Oregon M. E. Church, which closed at Salem last Monday, Rev. "Wm. Roberts was reappointed pastor of the M. E. church in this city for the ensuing year. Bev. Mr. Roberts will return on the Fleetwood to day. Rain fell at intervals all yesterday in terfering considerably with building. At the cape at 8 a. m. the wind was blowing 46 miles an hour, but our sheltered sit uation protects us from such stormy weather. , Emil Giller, private of Battery I, First artillery, Fort Canby, has been sent to the Napa, Cal., insane asylum. It was about time, as ho has been bothering the life out of our worthy sheriff writing letters to him. "Brick" Pomeroy, who made such a noise in the newspaper world years ago, has come to the surface again with a red hot Democratic paper in New York city. It is called the "The United States Dem ocrat," and has no nse for Blaine nor Butlet. It was Thackeray who said that no man would accept the position of king of all the earth if he had to do so under the proviso of wearing a tight shoe. Ho was right, and so is P. J. Goodman, who guarantees the finest and most comfort able foot wear in the city. "The American committee of the statue of liberty" send a long communication which boiled down is to the effect that they need $125,000 to finish the job, and that any one who wants to send them money should draw their checks payable to the order of H. F. Spauldiug, New York. Despite the dripping clouds and splashy streets last evening a pleasant party as sembled at Mrs. E. C. Holden's last even ing, the occasion being an introductory reoeption to Mr. E. W. Garner, the new pastor of the Presbyterian church, and nis family, who have lately arrived from the east. By a notice elsewhere it will be seen that the proposition to establish a coffee club gives fair promise of being an assured success. Everyone spoken to on the subject gives assurance of hearty co operation. It is the intention to organize this afternoon and begin active opera tions at once. Hermann "Wise returned from San Francisco on the State yesterday after noon. He brings a new and complete as sortment of gents' furnishing goods, clothing, etc., and has leased the store formerly occupied by Jordan & Bozorth, where he will have an opening and begin business next Saturday, the Gth inst. A case was tried over at Skamokwa last Tuesday, in which Neil Campbell was charged with obstructing the highway. A jury of six was impaneled, among whom was one woman, and when the case was argued the jury stood five for acquittal, one for conviction. It was the first time in "Wahkiakum county where a woman served as a juror. D. P. Thompson, manager of the Hol laday estate has engaged the services of auctioneer E. C. Holden to dispose of all live stock at Seaside on Clatsop plains. The stock comprises about 20 head of half blooded milch cows, several one and two-year-olds,forty hogs and some horses. The auction sale will take place about the 18th inst. Further particulars will be duly announced. A ten per cent, reduction on freights and fares to San Francisco is in order now. 'Tis a poor rule that won't work both ways. The river service is well enough, but $20 fare and $4 a ton for freight to San Francisco from Astoria is a little steep. If Eastern notions are to prevail and men have to work for starva tion wages, let a corresponding reduction be made all around. The O. R. & N. Co. might as well do that now as later on, for opposition is sure to come. The attention of our fishermen and thers anxious to secure a home of their own in one of the finest locations in up per Astoria, is directed to the advertise ment of Mr. E. C. Holden under new to day, who has been instructed to sell at public auction on the 13th inst., eight valuable lots in block 62 in Adair's ad dition to Astoria. Here is a chance too for some of our moneyed men who have foresight enough to realize that all such eligi Die property win, at no xato aay, De come scarce in the real estate market at the low prices obtainable at tho present time. Superintendent Allen, of tho Mechan ics' fair, of Portland, in response to in quiries, states that the board of directors have concluded to offer a gold medal as a first, and a silver medal as a second prize for hose contests during the exhibition this year. He also intimates there will be no difficulty in raising a liberal purse as an additional inducement to hose teams from abroad, and adds that the entire matter has been placed in the hands of Thomas A. Jordan and Frank G. Abell, who will nse every means in their power to make it a success. Here is a chance for Astoria to win additional trophies. AS" IXTERTIE1V WITH CAPT. DKBSET. WoaMn'i Stcnd the Ilrdpetlon. Upon the arrival of the Shite of Cali fornia yesterday jf ttrnoon, an Astohiax reporter interviewed Capt. Dtbney in re lation to the proposed reduction of wages, which just now form the all-important topic of the day. Capt. Debncy stated that on Saturday last ho sent word to the Pacific Coast Steamship Co., who own tho State, that the vessel would be ready to leave on Monday on tho adver tised time, but that in his opinion there would not bo men enough to properly man her; that the employes would not stand the reduction, and that in case the proposed order of reduction was enforced wholesale resignations would immediate ly ensue. The directors of the company at once held a meeting, and decided that the reduction would not be made, that the old prices would continue, and so notified Capt. Debney. The result is that there is NO BKDUCTION OK WAGES on board the State. It was not intended to try any reduction on the engineers, as it was well known that they would not stand anything of the kind, but every other employe on board the State, from the captain to the deckwasbern, was to have been scaled down. Cap!. Debney considers this as decisive, and is of the opinion that auy attempt to cat down the salaries of any of the employes of the State will result in their resignation. Papers were read in Sun Francisco on the departure of the State scilmg tho prices of the employes of tho Columbia which arrived Monday, and it is thought that in the case of that vessel and the Oregon, which leaves here to-day, the move will result in a victon on the part of the O. It. A N. Co., who "own the Ore gon and Columbia. Capt. Debncy states that b?fore his departure from San Francisco a meeting of masters of vessels ami lirt officers was held, -A which it wjnduc:detl TO 1'OltM AN awociytiox Similar in character and purposu to the Engineer.-. Union, which has thus far successfully withstood all effort to reduce tho wages of members. All holding masters' certificates entitling them to that position or to tho position of first officer, will be eligible for membership, and it is thought that they will join it to araan. The ocean and bar pilots' sala ries have been equalized; that is. the river pilots have been cut down all the way from $50 to $100 a month, they each get $150 a mouth under the new rulings. The S'eiT Steasicr. The new steamer Coos Bay came down stream yesterday and is at "Wyatt & Thompson's dock. She is commanded by Capt. J. E. Denny, an old and well-known Columbia river navigator, and has freight aboard for Yaquinn. She is brand now throughout; this being her first trip, and has the appearance of being a good sea boat. She is 144 feet long, 25 feet beam, 8 feet depth of hold aud was launched at Marshfield about two months ago. She registers 101.01 tons and makes ten or eleven knots an hour easily on a dairy consumption of seven tons of coal. She is billed to leave for Yaquina this morn ing with 250 tons of freight. At several of the little sawmill stations along tho Columbia the steamer made no regular landings, and a whito flag left fluttering on a pole was used as a signal that it was wanted. At one place the pi lot yielded to the flying signal, and wound his way into a narrow cove. The first whistle brought no one to tho banks, but later two women were seen walking leisurely toward tho boat. A deckhand jumped out, made fast to a tree against a strong current, and wo waited breath lessly until the foremost woman tiptoed it out to the edge of the bank and ex tending a letter asked calmly, "Can I mail this on boardr" The deckhand nut it in his pocket, and leaped onboard with nis oow-iine, wune mo captain, tne pnot and the purser fumed, and tho passengers shook with laughter. It doesn't require an astrologer or a medium, or gypsy with a dirty pack of cards. It is very simple, lies in a nut shell, and can be expressed in a very few words. The plan is this: If a girl ex presses a fondness for majestic men with large whiskery, make up your mind she will marry a very small man with none. If she declares that "mind" is all she looks for, expect to see her stand before tho altar with a verv nrettv fellow who has just sense enough to tie a craval bow. j It, on tho contrary, she declares eue iauaj have a handsome husband, look about for the plainest person in the circle of her acquaintance, and declare ''that is the man," for it will be. Men arc almost as bad. The gentleman who desires a wife with a mind and mission marries a lisping baby who screams at the sight of a mouse and hides her head when sue hears a sudden knock at the door. And the gentleman who dreaded anything like strong-mindedness, exults in tho fact that his wifo is cvervthing he detested. If a girl says of ene: "Marry him! I'd r.illior rliA'" Innl- nnnn thf fllf.lir nS Set tled, and expect cards to the wedding of these two people. If a roan remarks of a lady, "Not mv style at all,' await pa tiently the appearance of his name in tho matrimonal column in connection with , that lad-:. And, if any two people de-( claro themselves ''friends, andMiothing j u:orefjoa ni.ty know what will ceme: next. " WW RATK AUVKRTISKJIKSTS. We arj continually met with tho ques tion why we chargo more for advertise ments than our morning contemporary? The people who ask these questions in many cases appear to think that it is all the same to get the advertisement in ono paper as another, no matter what the character or circulation of tho respect ive journals. It costs twice as much mon ey to get out this paper as it does that, and its circulation is probably three times us great. This being the oase, we are justified in demanding at least twice as much for our advertising space. In fact, if we did not get more than they do wo could not keep up, and the Post Intel ligencer would fall as low as the Chron icle iu tho scale of nowspapers. Each paper knows the value of its space, and when that sheet says that a certain space in its columns is worth a dollar, which we say is worth two or three in our columns, the person informed may at once believe it is worth no more, and the probability is it is not worth so much. In this connection we may be pardoned for again stating that our city circulation, which is what the general advertiser esteems most highly, contin ues rapidly advancing. Seattle Pott In telligencer.
