m he a gtmwx ASTORIA, OREGON: WEDNESDAY SEPTEMBER 3, 18S4 IN ADDITION. Eveby newspaper in the north west capable of an opinion, has had something to say about the recent circular issued by the Northern Pacific Railroad Co., announcing that wheat upon all points of its line east of "Wallula, will be transported to Duluth, Minneapolis or St. Paul for eight dollars a ton. In addition to what has already ap peared in these columns concerning this important move on the part of the "benevolent monopoly," other points are worthy of consideration. All discussion comprises the sup position that Portland alone is con cerned. Leaving Portland entirely out of the question, it is a matter of inquiry whether wheat can bo ship ped from Eastern Oregon and Wash ington via Columbia river and sailing vessel cheaper than via the Northern Pacific railroad, the lakes, Erie canal and sailing vesseL It would appear that it can. It is to be noted that the circular in question says "from all points cast of Wallula junotion." Now the present rate from say Wlala Walla to Wallula junction is $2.40 per ton, which added to the S8 makes 310.40 a ton from Walla Walla eastward. It is an established fact that wheat shipments westward from Walla Walla need not necessa rily depeud on transmission via Portland. Ships can be chartered to load at Astoria for less rates than to load at Portland, and when the Co lumbia bar improvements, soon to be begun, are completed the difference of ten shillings per ton between here and San Francisco will no longer ex ist, and no rate eastward from Walla Walla, however low, can compete with rates obtainable via Astoria, the natural loading point for the export trade of the entire Columbia basin. The mistake that our contempora ries make is in leaving Astoria out of the discussion. This present reduc tion eastward is obviously made as a bluff on the part of the Northern Pacific to compel the 0. B. & N.. peo ple to throw up their hand without calling, but in the long runit will not prevail and the wheat yield of the northwest will go to England by the way nature intended it should the gateway of the Columbia. It is plain enough that the Northern Pacific can not carry wheat from Wallula to New York at $8 a ton and make any mon ey, and therefore that it does not in tend the service as other than tem porary, while it is equally plain that wheat can be carried westward and loaded on seagoing vessels from this port at far less cost than the present The advantage all lies on our side and no amount of invidious discrimination can permanently es tablish the contrary. "Am. lunatics," says Dr. Allen Mc Lean Hamilton, "are not liars." Such a statement coming from a medical expert of liigh standing will go far toward relieving the minds of those who imagined that they were. It is satisfactory to know that there are some truthful lunatics. From the variety and magnitude of lies which have recently been set a-going by campaign whoopers we are forced to the conclusion that the truthful lunatics must be all dead. If the learned doctor had reversed his prop osition and stated that all liars were not lunatics he would have trodden on dangerous psychological ground. Lying is undoubtedly an evidence of oblique mental vision. A perfectly sound mind cannot lie. There are few perfectly sound minds. Bubly Join; Bxji.Ii is very much too easily frightened. A long life of com parative ease and prosperity has weakened the action of his heart and made him nervous. The sturdy Brit on who fought at Agincourt and Cressyand Bosworth Field is now a paunchy old gentleman who starts at his own shadow. The latest British scare is that Mr. Andrew Carnegie, of Pittsburg, who has purchased a number of English newspapers, is trying to destroy the crown and house of lords. Mr. Carnegie.who islhe.most genial of millionaires is running his papers on business principles to make money. Ho does not, to be sure, think a crown anything but bric-a-brac and princes he thinks highly superfluous. But his method for gaining others to these views should not frighten John Bull. He carries nothing more ex plosive than printer's ink. Nicholas Axchelena, who died two months since at Bnenos Ayres, was probably the richest farmer in the world. His executors report his rural estates as follews: Land, 1,710 square miles; cows, 152,000; sheep, 410,000. He also owned much house property in Buenos Ayres, and his assets have been valued at 2,400,000. He inherited 200,000 from his' fa. ther thirty years ago. BiiAokwelis Islakd, which was bought by the municipality of New York in 1828 for $28,000, is now worth about $5,000,000, estimated on the basis of a real estate purchase made recently by the city. Fbom recently published tables it appears that the average time of sick ness among males is about nine days in each of their working years. In women it is a trifle more. Ar.ii great Americans, says an ob server, have middle names. It cannot be denied that middle names are popular. They act as vice-presidents when the first name is dropped or has been killed by some mud-slinging editor. We do not to any great ex tent part our names in the middle as the English do. The first is first at all times and "under all circumstances. Even our great women carry two names. No woman, indeed, with only a single name counts for much in the councils of the strong-minded. High ly cultured men like George Francis Train, spell out their entire names. Plumed knights and people of that stripe, leave the second name to the imagination of the'reader. The hand some candidate -upon the Democratic side boasts only one name, and that is an entire Grove or wood of family trees in itself. There is loud lamentation among the barbers over a threatened loss of patronage. They claim that men have gone mad over electoral betr. One customer vows that his beard shall not be shaved until Cleveland is seated in the White House. An other asserts that he will allow his mustache to grow until Blaine is elected. Another declares that no shears shall touch his hair until bold, bald Ben has issued his inaugural address. Still another insists that his barber must not use bay rum on his face until St John comes out of the wilderness and makes a straight path for the CapitoL Between strug gling against bets and trying to talk on both sides of politics in the same breath the way of the tonsorial artist is hard.
