Ct3 rt -$& 3fe ga gistwiatt. ASTOKIA, OREGON: TUESDAY AUGUST 2. 18S1 The Willamette Farmer adver tises that it will take pay for subscrip tions in wheat, at seventy cents a IraBfceL "A pbominext physician of Harris burg, Penn., claims that the death rate there is the lowest in proportion to the population of any city in this country." Astoria contests the claim. The fact that at Walla Walla a dozen of eggs are worth nearly as much as a bushel of wheat, and a pound of butter a little more, would seem to indicate that that section would pros per better with less wheat and more butter and eggs. The government has had bad luck with its postal notes. The first were so homely that people of taste could not conscientiously use them, and the new ones aTe so impregnated with ar senic that it is unsafe to handle them, especially with moist hands. . The New York Post (a Cleveland paper) says: Koscoe Conkling having been elected an honorary member of a Blaine club at Albany, declines in a letter, in which he says: "I am quite out of politics, and don't wish in any way to be drawn into the pending canvass.' The report of the average grand jury is a perfunctory sort of affair, but the last San Francisco jury's re port is a startling document. They arraign all the officials from constable to the governor of the state, and de serve well of their constituents for having the courage to point out so much of abuse as evidently exists. Arkansas had her state election yesterday: and, of course, went Demo cratic; Vermont has her state election to-day, and will, of course, go Repub lican. The most interesting Scptem ber election is that in Maine, whioh comes off next Monday, the 8th. Time was when Maine gave a big Bepubli can majority. Of late years it has been materially reduced. Blaine's friends claim the state by 15,000 ma jority. The man whose next-door neigh bor has a piano which is tortured at all hours of the day and night will be delighted to hear of something to his advantage. An inventive genius has just discovered a method by which the volume of sound of any piano may be reduced nearly eight-tenths. It consists of a wedge-like attach ment between the damper and the frame. People who suffer from an excess of melody have now the rem edy at their fingers' ends. They can strike the keynote of harmony by presenting this new patent noise suppresser to each one of their neigh bors who own a piano. The country would feel grateful if a similar method could be applied to the men who al ways talk politics. Theee is a shrewd suspicion that the Chinese government has been playing possum. Presuming upon the idea that their military and naval prowess has been underrated among the powers of Europe, the Celestials have been quietly fortifying their coasts and drilling their troops. In the war that is apparently inevitable,it wouldn't surprise intelligent military observers if the pigtails were to give France a little hotter work than she anticipates. The viceroy hates for eigners, and his feelings are no doubt shared by the bulk of the Chinese people. Even a rat will fight at bay, and a dragon is a much more formid able enemy. There seems to be little ohance of an amicable settlement now, and hostilities may open at any -moment. The pigtails have taken Canada. They have not exactly turned the Dominion into a big laundry, but they have spread themselves in a Mongolian manner over the land. In British Columbia they are swarming, 18,000 of them having taken up their residence in that province. The British Columbians are indignant. They have called upon the premier, Sir John Macdonald, to deliver them from their great affliction, but with . r out avail. All they want is a law up on the United States plan. Sir John willot move in the matter, and so the war goes on. British Columbia is disgusted and threatens to cast off the yoke that binds her to the Domi nion. She proposes to petition the home government to take her once more under its protection. Mean time Ah Sin keeps coming. So marked and prominent a feature of the criminal record has the offense of breach of trust become of late that the humorous paragraphers of the t country have begun to treat it as one of the salient facts of contemporary k . life. The bank cashier and the trusted confidential clerk have taken their 7places among the most conspicuous i F J. butts of the satire of the day. The exaggeration incidental to the exer cise of the humorist's occupation ." , must, of course, necessarily result in ration injustice to a very deserving and laborious class of men. At the same time the fact that the paragrapher has been able to find a handle for his .satire is a reflection at once on the prevalent tone of financial morality W-B&ii Md upon tiie condition oi tne cnmi " r "nal law or'the state of its administra (1 aad upon the condition of the crimi- '"Hen: 4 items.
