ASTORIA, OREGON:
THURSDAY.-
.AUGUST 28. 18Si
NO MONEY IN IT.
Isom Launinff & Co., of the Ked
Crown Flouring Mills Albany, have
just bought 100,000 bushels of wheat
at 60 cents per bushel. Most of the
wheat was secured in Linn count'.
Standard 27.
A cekt a pound for wheat is not
much encouragement to the "Willam
ette valley or Eastern Oregon wheat
raiser. Indeed it illustrates what The
Astoriak has so often iterated and
reiterated that the true policy of
the Oregon farmer is to abandon
wheat as a staple product and diver
sify his crop. No man can do other
wise than run behind at raising
wheat to sell for sixty cenls a busheL
The capital and labor that the har
vested wheat requires could be put
to far better use in the cultivation of
mixed crops, and the land would be
thereby enriched instead of becoming
exhausted.
"Whichever way "the Oregon wheat
raiser turns he sees a depressed mar
ket. In the East it would be but lit
tle inducement for him to attempt to
find a market, for the railroad com
pany would charge him the difference
between the price in Portland and in
Chicago, for carrying it to the latter
city. Across the sea the un
fortunate conditions under which
Columbia shipments are made
preclude the possibility of profit
Were the wheat shipped to Liver
pool from Astoria, as it should
be, and some day will be, the Oregon
farmer would stand some show of
getting something like a fair price for
his wheat. The Albany miller is able
to buy wheat there for a dollar a cen
tal. The California wheat grower can
get from $1.27 to SL33 a cental for
no better au article. In writing of
wheat, it must be taken into consid
eration that its value throughout the
world has not been so low for a pe
riod of lime embracing more than a
century. In 1781 wheat sold in Eng
land for 40s Gd a quarter. It steadily in
creased in value till in 1801 it was quo
ted at the enormous price of 119s Gd a
quarter. From 1781 to 18S1 it never
sold below 4.0s, except one season
1851 when it touched 3Ss 6d. It is
now selling in England for 37s 8d a
quarter. The English quarter is 480
pounds, or eight bushels. In talking
about a "quarter of wheat it may be
considered as being 500 pounds, or
five centals. As an English shilling
is worth a fraction over 24 cents in
our money, 37s 8d for a quarter of
wheat would beabout7sG)d a cental
or $1.03 a bushel. To carry a bushel
of Oregon wheat from here to Liver
pool at presont charter rates cost 3G
cents, which would make the bushel
of wheat arrived out cost the shipper
96 cents. The apparent margin of
12 cents would no more than pay
insurance, interest and incidentals,
which shows that unless the Oregon
shipper figures on an advance he
can't have much heart to buy wheat
to ship to Liverpool, even though he
buy it at sixty ceuts a bushel and
send it across the sea at 47s. Gd. a
ton. It is probable, however, that the
Albany millers will put the 100,000
bushels in the more condensed form
of flour, before sending it to Eng
land. The Dalles Tiihes-Jfountaineer is
informed "by a reliable person" that
it is the intention of the Baker City
branch of the Oregon Eailway & Nav
igation road to extend it to a junc
tion with the Oregon Short Line at a
point near Snake river. A line has
been surveyed running south of
Mount Jefferson, thence through
Wasco and Grant counties into Union
count-. It is thought that the Or
egon Short Line will seek an outlet
on the coast by the route specified,
now that the Northern Pacific has
virtually secured control of the Ore
gon Railway & Navigation Company's
line and the last-named company con
trols Burnt Pass.
A numbeb of clerks in the Portland
O. R. & N. Co.'s offices were dis
charged Monday night, says the
News, and it is possible more of them
will go in a few days. The worst has
not come yet, for it is reported that
salaries of O. R. & N. employes will
shortly be cut down ten per cent.
By an act of the Oregon legisla
ture the Oregon Pacific railroad
was given exemption from taxes for
twenty years, provided they completed
their road by October 19, 1834. This
time is rapidly approaching and there
is a strong effort being made to com
plete the road in time to save the ex
emption. Nelson Bennett has been award
ed the contract for the construction
of twenty-five miles of road on the
west end of the Cascade division of
the Northern Pacific Railroad. The
section to be constructed is from
South Prairie to Green river. There
were only three bidders, the Oregon
Construction Company, C.B.Robin
son and Bennett The cost of con
struction will reach $600,000.
An examination of Columbia river
salmon statistics shows that from the
inception of packing in 1866 to the
close of the season in 18S4 (nineteen
years), there have been packed 6,310,
658 cases, with a value of $34,450,000.
This indicates the enormous amount
of fish that has been canned from the
Columbia river, and salmon can now
be found in every market in the civi
lized world.
