that Cleveland will get 277 electoral
votes, and Blaine gets 124. That
settles it.
David Gossard, of Clear Spring,
Md., has just named his twenty-fifth
child Cleveland, and. he is sorry that
it isn't twins, so that he could name
it Hendricks also.
The Standard thinks that Oregon
has been "honestly Democratic" ever
since it gave 164 majority for Seymour
in 1868, and that the commonwealth
will give a majority for Cleveland next
November.
Gesebaii Butler's return to the
assessors of Lowell shows that his
income from his profession is $100,
000. His horses and yacht America
are valued at 30,000, and his real es
tate in Lowell at $60,500.
APhiladelhhia. inventor has com
pleted a locomotive which he claims
will be able to haul a train at the rate
of eighty miles an hour. Such a
speed appears to bo impossible, but
not more so than the present average
speed would have seemed fifty years
ago. In the matter of speed nothing
is'now impossible. Fifty years hence
steamers may cross the ocean in three
days, and trains go flying along the
tracks at a rate of eighty or even a
hundred miles an hour. It is just as
well, maybe, that we live in the pres
ent age, and not later. The speed
might be too much for us. Things
are rapid enough now.
Tiie Northern Pacific has received
a proposition from an English firm to
place a line of steamers on a line
from this point to the ports in China
and Japan. They want a subsidy
from the Northern Pacific of 2,000,000
acres of land. The Northern Pacific
people say they will not subsidize
any line, as they cannot afford it, but
will have a line of their own in a
short time. The Canadian Pacific
will, it is said by one of its officers,
establish such a lino from a point
near tne btraits or uca. Uregonian

When the Northern Pacific com
pany does establish a line of steam
ers between Japan and China and
this coast, Astoria will probably be
the American terminus of the line.
It is popularly supposed that the
way of the transgressor is hard, but
recent events have proved the fallacy
of that belief. A poor man who stole
a ham in New York city the other day
was sentenced to four years in the
state prison. A clerk who embezzled
hirv-fir nanfc f -:- .
was sentenced to pay ten dollars and
costs. The way of these transgressors
was certainly hard, but during the
past few months Wall street has fur
nished several striking illustrations
of the opposite side. The defaulting
bank clerks who steal hundreds of
dollars do not seem to be included in
the category of transgressors. They
arc considered great financiers. When
a poor man steps aside from the path
of rectitude his way is indeed hard,
but when the bank cashier uses other
people's money his way is Canada.
His easy escape from the clutches of
the law puts a premium on wholesale
robbery.
An eastern paper, commenting on
the low .prices of cereals, extracts
comfort from the following statement:
"A dollar will buy to 2 to 3 pounds
more of sugar than a year ago; leather
has declined 3 to 5 cents, or 10 to 15
per cent; pig iron has declined about
15 per cent; steel rails 36 per cent;
bar iron 15 per cent; nails 24 per
cent; cotton goods 4 to 10 per cent;
though raw cotton is higher than a
year ago; common woolen fabrics are
10 to 30 per cent lower, etc. The only
articles of great commercial import
ance which sell at relatively higher
prices are certain agricultural pro
ductions, such as corn, live stock and
meat. It, therefore, results that a
bushel of wheat should have at pres
ent valuations about 9s great a pur
chasing power as a year ago, though
the price is much lower. It should
purchase more sugar, iron, hardware
and many other articles than a year
ago, but-of some other articles, such
as coffee and cotton goods, it will pur
chase less."
The opinion of the southern con
gressmen that Mr. Blaine's sons
would be justified in "going gunning"
for the editor of the Indianapolis
Sentinel, because the latter had li
belled their mother, is based on
southern notions. Were the matter
to be elucidated or settled by phys
ical combat that might be a good
way; but a duel rehabilitates a rascal
of tener than it avenges a wrong. The
scandalous story would remain.
There is often the greatest excuse
for the publication of a libel in a
newspaper: there is no excuse for
persisting in it when the contrary is
shown. The Sentinel calls the
prompt anger of the father and hus
band "bluster." What it took to be
a Democratic camgaign commonplace
it finds has brought it a libel suit.
The Sentinel persists in the slander
which its more wily but less plucky
brothers of the eastern press only
hinted at in a pharfasical way. The
sympathy of the manhood and wom
anhood of the United States, ignor-

The Welcome thinks that farmers
who contemplate borrowing money
at ten or twelve per cent so they can
hold their wheat for a rise had bet
ter make -out a deed in fee simple,
seek the residence of the money lend
er, slip the deed under his door and
quietly depart. Such a course would
save a great deal of worry and an
noyance and be a short cut to the in
evitable result, that will be reached
in the long run.
Netwithstanding: all the fun that
has been poked at the prohibition
party on account of its aqueous pro
clivities, Nature is doing her best to
boom the cause of temperance. Be
cently, in a certain portion of Mexico,
where there has been a continual
drouth for ten years, and where a
month ago not even a mosquito could
find sufficient moisture to quench its
thirst, five large springs of living
water have suddenly burst forth.
Let the followers of St John be of
good cheer, and continue their cam
paign against -the demijohn. Had
these springs been of an alcoholic
nature the cause of temperance might
have received a blow which would
have staggered it. Perhaps those
springs were intended as a hint to
the other political parties to put more
water in their whisky this fall.
