tcWill you have a plate of cream,

"Nn. timnlr vrm?T vnrv rareh" eat

" weu, do try a clisix ot strawuern,
wnn't vnn TinrV' Tip rnntinned.
"No, Alfred, they are so high priced,
and I really care very little for them,
she answered.
u I am so sorry,,' ho said, with an
inane desire to plunge his head un
der a butter tub. "Now you must
indeed, you shall take a glass of soda.
"You'll have to excuse me, but I
only care to saunter along with you,
dear," she replied.
He could resist no longer. 'Will
you- will you be my darling, ducky
wifey, my sweetest?" he exclaimed.
Thev were married that month.
Late in August, when she had bank
rupted him on ice cream and ten
cent California pears, he sadly re
marked; "I thought you didn't care for
these things, Maud? You didn't ap
pear to before we were married."
"Oh, yes. I remember that time
you refer to, Mr. Smith. I was a
trifle careful what I ate, just then,"
she answered, and Mr. Smith buried
himself in reflection.
The contributions to the con
science fund of the treasury in the
last fiscal year amounted to over
66,000. This fund has, since its es
tablishment twenty years ago,
amounted to abont SKQ.OOO. For
some vears past it has averaged from
S5,0C0"to 7,000 a year. The term
"conscience fund" was originated by
Treasurer Spinner. One day during
the war he received a letter from the
treasury department from a man who
enclosed a check for Sl,500, saying it
represented a misappropriation of
government funds of which he had
been guilty while a quartermaster in
the army. "Suppose we call this a
contribution to tho conscience fund
and get it announced in the news
papers, and perhaps we will get some
more," hesuggested. The announce
ment was made, and the treasury be
came the recipient of such funds.
The largest contribution ever made
was 4.000, forwarded by an ex-revenue
ganger from Chicago, as the
amount of a bribe received by him
from distillers who desired to defraud
tho government. Tho smallest was
9 cents forwarded by a Massachu
setts man who remembered that he
had at one time, years before, used a
marked &cent stamp on a letter. In
order to relieve his conscience he
sent three times tho original steal,
which he thought was a fair compen
sation. Many of these contributions
come from persons who have smug
gled goods. The majority of these
are from women.
Tho desperation with which China
men are attempting to cross tho bor
der into the United States from tho
English side, is told by the following
dispatch received at Port Townsend,
dated Seattle, August 19, 18S1: "To
A. "W. Bash, Collector of Custems:
Six Chinamen killed hiding in the
wheel of the North Pacific. Look
out Olympian, too. Signed: A China
man.
PILES! PILES! PILES!
A SURE CURE FOUND AT LAST!
NO ONE NEED SUFFER.
A sure cure for Blind, Bleeding'
Itching and Ulcerated Piles has been
discovered by Dr. "Williams (an Indi
an Bemedy,) called Dr. "William's In
dian Pile Ointment A single box has
cured the worst chronic cases of 25
or 30 years standing. No one need
suffer live minutes after applying this
wonderful soothing medicine. Lotions
instruments and electuaries do more
harm than good. "William's Indian
Pile Ointment absorbs the tumors,
allays the intense itching, (particular
ly at night after getting warm in bed,)
acts as a poultice, gives instant relief,
and is prepared only for Piles, itching
of the private parts, and for nothing
else.
Bead what the Hon. J. M. Coffinber
ry of Cleveland says about Dr. "Wil
liana's Indian Pilo Ointment: I have
used scores of Pile Cures, and it af
fords me pleasure to say that I have
never found anything which gave
such immediate and permanent relief
as Dr. "William's Indian Ointment
Hon. Judge "W. P. Coons, Maysville,
Ky., says: "I have suffered for years
with itching piles, and have used
many remedies. I have used Dr. "Wil
liam's Indian Pile Ointment and been
cured while every other remedy has
failed." For sale by all druggists and
mailed on receipt of price, $1.00.
