INFAMOUS DOCTRINE.
AVe have no disposition to engage
in scandalous debate, no matter
whom it concerns. Its introduction
into this campaign is humiliating,
and presents us as a people in a most
unenviable light to foreign critics.
Bnt it is upon us, and despite the
efforts of decent journals to ignore it
Their condemnation seems fruitless.
But what is worse than campaign
scandal itself, is the apology for it.
The Evening Post, of New York,
that has held itself up as a pattern of
the virtues these many years, out of
whose weekly labor is born that most
staid and virtuous sheet, the Nation,
the respectability of which has been
a3 stiff and polished as a marble slab
this especially holy sheet, without
a tinge of color reddening its cheek,
says "chastity is not the greatest of
virtues, and offences against it may
be consistent with the possession of
all the qualities which ennoble hu
man naturo and dignify human life."
Whether it be true or not, is not now
our concern, but the printing of such
"stuff" is simply abominable. It is
mischievous beyond estimate It
is not such doctrine as we teach
our sons and daughters, or as any
parent desires his child to imbibe.
We would certainly view as a curios
ity the father who would preach such
heresy to virtue in the bosom of his
family, or excuse it in his son or
daughter. We should much like to
see the man who would hold forth to
young men and women in such a
strain. Good men teach the youth
that the whip hand of the animal
passions is the most terrible taskmas
ter; that the loo3e rein of desire is
the leading string to ruin ; that
there is no code of moral ethics which
will recognize impurity as harmless;
that to preach the doctrine that the
unchaste may still be possessed
of "all other qualities which
ennoble human nature and dig
nify human life," is to license
unchastity and licentiousness. It
may be true, as an abstraction, that
some men and women, in other re
spects possessed of "all the ennobling
qualities," has been in this one re
spect vicious; but to coolly preach
the doctrine of consistency between
vice in any form and a noble life, is,
as the Hartford namesake of the New
York Post puts it, "immeasurably
mischievous in its tendencies," and
most dangerons preaching. It is in
precise keeping with the infamous and
cold-blooded wickedness of the New
York Herald, that has the unblush
ing effrontery to declare that "the
critical point is not that a man gets
into such a scrape, bnt how ho gets
out of it." Here's a moral teacher
for you, who would presently trans
form society into a colony of moral
leprosy, our homes into lazerottos of
prostitution, and over every door
write the devil's preverb: "It is not
the vice you do, but the sin is in be
ing found out."
It appears to have been determined
by physical examinations of one of
the bodies that of Lieut. Kislings
bury that some, at least, of the
Greely survivors did sustain life by
eating of the flesh of their deceased
comrades. Well, and what of it?
Why prononnce it a "horror" and
speak of it in reproachful terms?
What better use could the flesh of
the dead men be put to than to save
the lives of their comrades? Canni
balism is horrible only when it is a
practice and not a necessity. The
dire necessity that drove these men
to eat of Kislingsbury's muscles was
an insanity born of irresistible de
mands of nature. Let men who are
able to give positive assurancQ that
they would not under like circum
stances have acted in a like manner
be the first to upbraid.
Judge Clark of Macon, Ga., has
shown that if all judges would do
their duty there would be no need of
resort to lynch law. Three weeks
ago two crimes were committed in
Southwestern Georgia, of the kind
that have unhappily become too pre
valent of late. One of the offenders
was lynched, but the other crime
having been committed in Judge
Clark's district, he at once convened
a special term of his court, the pris
oner was tried, convicted and sen
tenced to be hanged August 25th.
The example is commended to other
courts of justice.
The editor of the Kentucky State
Journal wants to bet somebody that
before another hundred years are
past there will be trotters in this
country that will make a mile in less
than two minutes. It is to be hoped
the Journal man will find some one
to take him, that he will make the
sum a large one and let us hold the
stakes. There is a chance for the
stake-holder to enjoy himself before
the money is called for.
The Philadelphia Ledger has this
especially pregnant thought, which
is as meaty as any that has yet ap
peared m the columns of the press on
the question of rest, leisure and recre
atien: "The man who comes nearest
to a person of leisure is the one of
many thoughts and occupations and
social interruptions, who finds
rest in change andN liberty in
metnocL His industry invites re
poe, and it comes to him."
The New York Times says: "Prac
tically his (Butler's) candidacy arrays
all the vicious elements in American
politics on one side in this contest."
According to the Times the vioioiis
elements in the Republican party
nominated Blaine, and the same ele
ment in the Democratic party sup
ported Butler. Accepting Blaine ...d
Butler as one in this contest, both
being opposed to Cleveland, the con
clusion above quoted is arrived at
The New York Times is practically
a free trade journal and a supporter
of all the measures which tend to the
cheapening of labor. No journal in
the United States opposed the enact
ment of a law restricting Chinese
immigration with more vigor than
the Times, and it has recently spoken
of the anti-contract labor plank in
the Republican platform as a con
cession to the hoodlums of Califor
nia. It is in keeping with the pro
fession of such a journal to confound
the laboring men of both parties
with the "vicious" elements.
Apkopos of a published statement
that the English judges are all clesn
shaven, the Philadelphia Record re
marks that before the war cleanly
shaven faces were almost universal
among the men in that locality, and
in the case of judges there was not
one exception. Now a man is seldom
seen without beard or mustache,
nearly all the judges falling in with
the style. A few years ago, in many
parts of the country, a man with a
mustache was regarded with sus
picion, and would find it difficult to
gam admission into respectable fam
ilies. Among the close states in 18S0,
California went Democratic by 78
votes, and New Jersey by 2,010. Con
necticut went Republican by 2,650
votes, Indiana by 6,612 and New York
2L033. In 1882 California went Dem
ocratic by 23,510 votes, Connecticut
by 4,161, Indiana by 10,416, New Jer
sey by 3,113 and New York by 192,854,
Kansas, Massachusetts and Michigan
also went Democratic
If Mr. Blaine is elected president
he will be the first for some years who
was not a lawyer. He will also pre
sent as the candidate who iB pecu
liarly the idol of a section in which
ho never lived the West, or as the
New York Herald has termed it, "the
rowdy West," and which the people
of the West have adopted aH a cam
paign watchword.
