' Is K I FCTBlfi TIIE SEATTLE EXTENSION. The Northern Pacific Order their Rollins; Stock Withdrawn. Yesterday orders were received by Mr. J. M. Buckley, assistant general manaper of the Uorlliern Pacific, from President Harris, to withdraw the company's rolling stock from the extension between Puyallup and Seattle. This was done, and the lino is now temporarily abandoned. How long it will remain'so no one at this time knows. The road was opened July 6, and did a nice through ireiguc business, as the transfer at Tacoma was thus avoided. There was also a good local business from the valleys which the line crossed. " Though only about forty miles long, the link has a com plication of ownership. The north ern half of the road was built by the Puget Sound Shore company, which is controlledby the Oregon aud Trans continental company. The southern half was built by the Northern Pa cific. "When tho road was finihsad the Transcontinental company could not raise enough money to stock its half, so arrangements were made with the Northern Pacific whereby the lat ter equipped the line and charged the Seattle company rental for the rolling stock. From this it will be seen that the Northern Pacific has the smaller company completely in its power, and proposes to exert it. There are two good reasons for this action, viewed from the standard of the Northern Pacific. First, on general principles, tho Northern Pa cific does not want to be hampered with twenty-five or thirty miles of another company's road over which it must run to reach its Puget Sound terminus. It wants exclusive control of the line. Under rail road usage the terminal line collects freight on all through shipments. Hence on all freight from the East to Seattle the Puget Sound company would collect tne cuarges lor tne entiro instance, though it handled the freight only a few miles against the Northern Pa cific's 2,000 miles. Second It was reported to the Northern Pacific that the Paget Sound shore was trying to secure the hop trade of the "Puyallup valley away from the Northern Pacific, car ry the crop to Seattle, and thence by ocean to San Francisco where the hops have found a market in previous years. The Northern proposes to carry those hops East, hence it has shut the Shore road out of tho field until after the season is over. Third If the Puget Sound shore is kept without a Northern Pacific connection, ant! too hard-up to equip its own road, the property must de preciate, and the .Northern Jracinc will naturally gobble it up for next to nothing. That will give the North ern Pacific untrammeled entrance into Seattle. The above reasons are only what is surmised. An order to abandon a road which has once been opened to traffic is not done without good cause. It is not likely that tho order will be countermanded by the time announced for the opening of tho Kalama branch, which was to give us all rail connection with Seattle by the 10th of next month. However, the Seattle people need not be con cerned. Tho natural water way of Puget Sound is worth more than all the railroads that could ever bo bnilt upon its shores Oregonian, 22. PILES! PILES! PILES! A SURE CURE FOUSI) AT LAST! NO ONE NEED SUFFER.
