Jeo. PJeasance of Portland, has an ex
perience not common with fathers. Ho
thrashed his boy the other day for some
infraction of parental discipline, and the
youngster went to the police court and
had bis papa arrested. The "old man"
had to appear and give bonds for further
appearance when the case was called,
and on going home to dinner he found
the" cause of all this trouble calmly sip
ping his soup. This aroused the paren
tal -ire and Mr. P. again switched his
hopeful ,son who at once posted off and
had his pa arrested again. If the boys
in general follow his example they will
- make it mighty troublesome for their
B0Mtral progenitors.
The extraordinary time 300 yards in
36 seconds made by Geo. Noland at
Albany last Thursday occasions consid
erable comment. The reoord is a splen
did one, and for an amateur rarely
equalled. The best time on record was
made at Edinburgh, Scotland, on the 2nd
of last January, by H. Hutchens, a pro
fessional. He made 300 yards in 30 seo-
onds. In America the best 300 yards rec
ord is credited to L. E. Myers, an ama
teur, "who nfade that distance at New
York city, Oct. 22, 1881, in 2, seconds.

MOBE "SALMON NOTES."
AsTOBiA, Aug. 22, 1884.
Editoe Asteiuax:
While salmon seems of dull sale it is
but the effect of the general depression
in all lines of goods. The Pacific coast
cannot overstock the world. Let salmon
be pushed into all the markets and it
will be a comparatively scarce article.
The whole pack of the coast last j-ear
(1883) did not equal the quantity of one
can of salmon par year to each inhab
itant of the United States, to say nothing
of the millions of people elsewhere.
This year the pack is estimated to bo
200,000 cases short of last. Its cheapness
now will stimulate its consumption.
But having reached a figure that is profit
less to tno pacKer it will not go lower.
Next year many will probably not run,
and the pack will probably be greatly re
duced. In fact several canneries are
being closed out by process of law now.
This will not throw any salmon on the
market, however, to be auctioned off. as
it has been disposed of so that none falls
into tho sheriff's hands. No cannerv-
man will be foolish enough to pack next
3'ear on present prices. I he salmon of
the Columbia river should be sold on the
river instead of being sent to San Fran
cisco, or throueh San Francisco brokers.
Tho policy of shipping around tho Horn
to New York is now agitated. Freight
by sail is less than on tho cars and it
would seem to be of advantage to the
packer to ship that way. It was so
claimed last year and tho experiment was
made but resulted in no practical benefit
to the packer. When it reached New
York it was sold at the market price less
the difference in freight between sail and
rail. In other words the buyer got the
benefit of the loss freight. Worse than
that: it had tho effect to break the mar
ket, and cause all tho salmon sent east
afterwards, that is, this season, to be
sold less. So if a vessel goes to New
York now with a cargo, she will arrive in
the winter and depress tho market for
salmon next spring and affect next year's
business, unless the salmon should be
handled differently.

ItUXORKD KAILUOAD CIIlUE.
Tho Seattle Posl-Intelligenccr of the
15th of August said: "A number of im
portant changes are contemplated
among the railroads of Oregon and Was
ington. The two most important of these
are full operation of the new sections
from Portland to Kalama, and from Tp
coma to Seattle; this including, of course,
tho us6 of the new iron ferry boat on the
Columbia river. It is said that through
trains will be run to Seattle; including
sleepers and dining cars, and that all
freight for this city will be brought by
rail, and probably all freight for points
in Snohomish, Skagit, Whatcum and in
land counties. A. J. Thomas, second vice
president of the Northern Pacifio, will bo
sent from New York to Portland, there
to have general supervison of all the con
solidated interests. General Manager
Buckley will be transferred from Ta
coma to Portland. Tho head offica of
the steamboats on Puget Sound will re
main in Tacoma, and the transfer of Port
Townsend, British Columbia and Alaska
freight will continue there to be made.
The shops will also be retained there,
and such business as rightfully belongs
to this place, but there will be n marked
loosening of the'pressuro put upon other
towns for the benefit of that, notably to
the relief of this city."

ASTOBIA, Aug. 22, 18SI
Ed. Astebiak:
I heard Robert Ingersoll lecture in this
city last night, two long hours. Ho is a
wonderful man; ho is a wonderful orator;
he has a wonderful influence over his au
dience, and 'tis all because he is sincere
ly truthful and honest. But he looks to
me to have u white veil over his head
that comes down over his eyes and ears
and he is blind and deaf. Incersoll's
body from just below his eyes and ears
to the soles of his feet is inspired with
an unusual inspiration, so much so that
when he opens his mouth music flows
forth like the ripple upon the mountain
lake; like the cataract over the water
fall; like the music from an osolian harp.
Should that subtle veil that covers his
brain, his eyes and his ears, be rent
asunder, Ingersoll would be a man such
as will be in the future, when all man
kind shall have learned enough to live
upon something that is not of tho chcin
istry of the cows, cabbage, or cornfield;
when mankind shall have learned to live
without so much toil and suffering; when
mankind shall know enough to be happy
when they are surrounded by so much
that as yet they know not of; surrounded
by so much wisdom that mankind has
not yet learned. Would that some power
would tear the veil that covers his brain,
eyes and ears, that ho might opsn the
flood gates of wisdom, and forever put
an end to so much suffering nnd jwoe in
this world.
We have lone read books written by
men whose brains were inspired; listened
to sermons and orations delivered by
men whose brains only were inspired,
and they were and aro not true; for tho
simplo reason that their bodies were car
nal, their daily wants were carnal and
they failed to deal truthfully with their
fellow men. Their writings and teach
ings havo not yet made mankind honest
and truthful for this simple reasen:
these men whose brains were inspired,
wrote and spoke to gratify their carnal
bodies, whose wants were baso and lust
ful, but they have all been axmen hew
ing out the trails that mankind have and
will travel m tho different paths of pro
gression, from that long and hidden past
to that resplendent future when man
kind will bo peaceful and happy.
Ingersoll is doing a good work in hew
ing out n mountain trail of thought
through the wilderness for mankind to
travel in their journey of journeys, from
the dark nnd hidden past to a more en
lighted future. Ingersoll's inspired
body below his brain, eyes, and ears
is now doing moro to make tho author
write better, the artisan and farmer
to work better and sing sweeter songs
than all the brain inspired writers and
teachers that have inhabited the earth.
Oh, Ingersoll, with an inspired body,
whose greatness as yet has not been
equaled, but whose brain and spirit are
so thickly veiled that you can only real
ize tho physical wants of mankind and
not even dream of a belter day coming
whose teachings will outlast the ages
whoso teachings now are felt through all,
the world as none have been who have
taught before you; you were born a few
years ago, a little babe! You have grown
to be a great man, and all you yet know
is that m a few years you must die Iiko
other men and that is the last of Inger
soll! What a a sad sight to contemplate!
Good byo Ingersoll! Wo are going an
other way. We prefer to last a little lon
ger; to rend the veil asunder that we
may have a peep through the gates now
ajar, and live forever.

"Open Confession."
There is one man in Oregon who be
lieves that "open confession is good for
the soul," judging from the following
card, signed "E. CT. Clark," and printed
in the Times-Mountaineer of The Dalles:
"This certifies that I owe Mr. Nichols $46
for board, and Mr. Nichols has asked me
several times for it; on account of which
there has been some little hard feelings
between us, and in consequence I have
tried to injure Mr. Nichols' character by
telling lies about him around this town
when under the influence of liquor. I
know of nothing wrong about him, and
believe him to be a gentleman in every
respect. And also that I have several
wives scattered around through the coun
try, have not drawn a sober breath since
I nave been here, never have paid for the
clothes I wear, and am in fact generally
depraved."

DECLINE OF THE SALHON FISHERIES ON
THE SACRAMENTO.
The salmon run in the Sacramento
river has decreased until it has proved
disastrous to canneries and fishermen.
It promises to become extinct. In this
dilemma the fishermen threaten to vio-
lato the close season, and defy the law.
The causa of the decay of the fisheries is
attributed, first to the sea lions at the
Golden Gate. It it said they destroy
5,300 pounds offish daily. It is alleged
that tho throwing of trimmings into tho
river by the cannery employes is another
cause of tho slackening of the run, it be
ing held that tho fish avoid waters into
which parts of tho bodies of dissected
fish aro cast. This may be a fanciful,
or it may be a cogent, reason; certainly
fishermen have faith in it. One admit
ted prime cause is the surcharging of the
waters of the river with mining detritus
and the coating of the bed of the stream
with hydraulic sands and slickens,
These evils destroy tho feeding grounds
and obliterate spawning beds. Thai tho
fouling of tho water by mining process
tends to repel tho fish is certain, while
overflows, owing to the raised river bed
certainly carry many young fish into ba
sins, where the falling of the waters
leaves them to perish. Ihe catfish is
said to b8 destructive of the young fry
salmon. Added to all theso misfortunes
is the discontinuance of tho McCloud fish
hatching establishmen, heretofore main
tained by tho United States government.
In contrast to the depletion of our
fisheries, is the overcrowding of northern
streams by salmon. The runs were never
so great there as now. It is hold by some
that the salmon will return next season
to the Sacramento, but fishermen gen
erally are not consoled by this possibility,
it is certain that the legislature must
give this matter of tho supply of food
fish greater attention that has been ac
corded by its predecessors. The fish
commissioners, in the first place, must be
given ample means and lull power to
cany on their work of protecting the
fishery interests, even to the destruction
of tho seals nnd catfish. In tho next
place, the funds for tho mointcnanco of
a sufficient river police force under tho
direction of the commissioners must be
provided, and the hatching establish
ments must be fostered. If the McCloud
hatchery can bo reopened at reasonable
cost it should bo done. There is prob
ably no location so well ndapted to tak
ing salmon and stripping for the eggs
and milt as in McCJoud river. If it is
true that it cost the general government
but 10,000 per year, this state can well
afford to re-establish the hatchery. The
cultivation of food fish is becoming more
nnd moro a public necessity. As the cost
of flesh food advances, the demand for
fish will increase, and tho necessity for
meeting the demand becomes im
perative upon tho state. The clearing
of the water and bed of the river
or sucuens and sand is, of course,
tno great desideratum. uut wo
cannot expect this to be accom
plished at once. It is the hope that it
will be done; that the further disposition
of mining detritus in the streams will
be entirely prohibited. It must be, soon
er or later, and to the end that it may bo
done at the earliest moment, tho rights
of the riparian dwellers to have the de
structive process shut off from further
damage should bo enforced before the
law. But when this is f ally, as has al
ready been partially accomplished, it will
remain tho duty of tho Federal govern
ment to facilitate tho natural tendency
of the river to scour out its bed, by arti
ficial aids, and to this end all legitimato
means should bo employed to bring con
gress to consider the case of tho Sacra
mento river, and to act vigorously for its
restoration to something approaching its
original integrity. Until this is done,
and tho descent of tho sands in tho can
yons barred from passage into tho river,
we cannot expect a restoration of tho
stream. It never will 'be what it
was, but its navigability can bo greatly
improved and its inviting character for
fisheries v:istly enhanced. The subject
is one of commercial importance. The
fishery interest must be restored if it is
possible of accomplishment. Tho next
legislature should feel such a pressure on
this subject next winter that it will not
ienoro it. Sacramento liecord-Union.
