m k gaity gtorian. ASTORIA, OREGON: FRIDAY AUGUST 22, 18S1 1NGERSOLUS LECTURE, The first question that one asks himself after listening to Col. Inger soll is "What does he offer me?" In gersoll is purely an iconoclast He tears down. But after the structure comes tumbling down; after the dust of crumbling mortar has cleared away, what is to be done? Will he build again? It would appear not. Much that Ingersoll says is true; it was said in truth, long before the lecturer was born; it continues to be repeated because it cannot be im proved. But his plagiarism doesn't help the case or make us feel better in any way. To all of us come doubts; oftentimes denials. What men some times call "a want of faith" is the very opposite. The soul hungers af ter more, not less. The past is so narrow, the future grows so broad. Iugersoll's "glittering generalities" do not satisfy the sincere doubter. How many of us there are who want to believe, but find the scheme of salvation so ap parently inconsistent. To inquiring minds, to men who are not content to be told that a thing is so without wanting to know how it is so, what makes it so, the utterances of Inger soll are as unsatisfactory as the ut terances of Ignatius. Poetry, elo quence, loft' imager, fascinating presentation of thought, all theso In gersoll possesses ; he is an accom plished orator and a most pleasing man to listen to on the lecture plat form, but he doesn't strike the level of the distracted soul that asks: "What is the truth?" and will be satisfied with naught else. The confession of the Irish in former, Casey, that he was forced by crown officials to frame the story of the Maamtrasna murders he told on the witness stand reveals a terrible state of affairs in Ireland. It is so much of a companion picture with that laid bare by the Cornwall trial that it will be readily believed. The infamous creatures who conduct the real government of Ireland will be held capable of any infamy, and the forcing of a weak wretch under threats of lifelong imprisonment to swear away the life and liberty of the innocent seems small as a crime be side their already detected criminal ity. The "Castle" government in Ireland is doomed. It was known as the instrument of torture of an un fortunate people. It will now disap pear under. the cnrses of outraged humanity, as the Cities of the Plain went down under the curse of Gad. The idea that the dominant party ought to be held responsible for every national misfortune, from cold win ters to bank defalcations, is neither new nor good, but has been in opera tion many years in this country, though exactly why nobody can tell. It appears to be one of those notions which originate no one knows where which has no reason for its existence, is not advocated by anybody, nobody will openly confess his belief in it, and yet is acted upon by thousands who have but an ill-defined impres sion that in some inexplicable way a change for the better, even in the courses of nature, will be effected by turning one set of men out of office and putting in others in their stead. In the matter of treaties the dusky Africans are ahead of us. Our extra dition treaties contain a great many words, but cover a very few crimes. Here is a treaty between the king of Ethiopia and the khedive of Egypt, which contains few worda and em braces every criminal case: "His majesty the Negoosa Negust and his Highness the Khedive engage to de liver up, one to the other, any crimi nal or criminals who may have fled to escape punishment from the do minions of the one to the dominions of the other." This is brevity and simplicity, combined with thorough ness. The last trip of the steamer Oregon from New York to Queenstown was made in 6 days, 12 hours and 54 min utes. This is the shortest trip on record. The Oregon covered 2,853 miles on the trip. Her best 24 hour run was 44G miles on the 5th of Au gust, or nearly nineteen miles an hour. It is asserted that "stakes are driv en into the sewers at London, from which stakes a fatty deposit, left by the current, is -scraped every day, and after proper treatment this fat ty deposit becomes dairy butter." Whew! The prophet sometimes gets known in his own country after awhile. Christopher Columbus is soon to have a small tablet erected to com memorate his performance at Calni, the small Corsican seaport wherelie was born. St.Pauii and Minneapolis continue their race for a lead in population. This year St Paul's directory con tains 39,729 names, and that of Min neapolis 39,533. - m I.
