ftj v Wm gmltj stmfett. ASTOBIA, OREGON: WEDNESDAY AUGUST 20, 1881 Butleb beat Cleveland after all in his letter of acceptance. But hold on! May be Mr. Cleveland has -written his letter of acceptance, but forgotten to mail it. A mak without enemies is said to ba a fool Such being the case it is tolerably certain that there are no fools connected with the present presidential struggle. "The tax rate in the city of Boston ha3 reached -what may be called the danger point This year it is $17 a thousand." Oregonian. The aggre gate of taxes in Astoria this year is $35 on the thousand, a little more than double that of Boston. The "danger point" in our little city ib not far distant unless a halt is soon called. Wheat is -worth 45 cents a bushel at Walla Walla: SL12a bushel at Liverpool. That is, it costs 67 cents to get a bushel of -wheat from -where it is raised to market It takes thirty cents of the 67 to carry it from As toria; it costs 37 cents to get it from Walla Walla to Astoria by the pres ent system, and yet the Walla Walla papers in one column bewail the low price of wheat, and in the next throw cold water on The Astobiak's effort to have the Columbia river bar im hroved. Is England drifting toward a re public? Mr. Morris, the "Earthly Paradise" man, says that the middle classes are becoming socialists. John Bright is at the head of the crusade against the lords. The people are clamoring for reform. Land has be come a drug in the market Business in many lines is stagnant Workmen are emigrating or starving. Noble men and sons of noblemen are plac ing their money in our western lands. The Queen is more a cipher than ever, and the Prince of Wales is pop ular because he is good natured. Influences are certainly at work in John Bull's island which will give it the blessing of presidential elections perhaps before the century is dead. The Franco-Chinese muddle grows more mixed with every dispatch. One day the imperial tea-chests are re ported to have taken down their signs. Another they are coiling up their pigtails for action. Now they will pay up their little score. then again they won't All this time the French admiral is waiting with his decks cleared and his pow der dry. On Saturday it was rumor ed that Lespes had bombarded and captured Kelung on the island of Formosa. Then M. Ferry, the French prime minister, says that no such event has happened. The entire matter was to have been referred to our minister, John Bussell Young, in China. Now that arrangement seems to have fallen through. There is nothing for it, apparently, but a good fight The .Nihilists, Nationalists, or whatever they are pleased to call themselves, are not idle. Finding that the blowing-up business is not quite so successful as was expected they are now devoting their destructive minds to arson. Vienna is at present in a slate of panic and the frequency of notable conflagrations certainly gives cause for alarm. It is a coward ly as well as stupid business. 'What special benefit the destruction of handsome buildings is to bring to the idle and vicious children of anarchy does not appear. Beason does not, unfortunately, enter into their de liberations; otherwise they would in' continently hoist themselves with their own petards. It is to the inter est of all true men that they should be brought to justice. NEW TO-DAY. NOTICE. THE S. S. "COOS BAY" 500 Tons register, new, fast sailing Classed A 1. New Yore, Aucust 11. 1SSQ. J MkSSTS. SKA.BCET & JoHXSOX, Gentlemen; Like most of my profession, I am cautious about pinning my faith to any new medicine or curative agent. But your BENSON'S CAPCINE POROUS PLASTER has broken through tho barriers and won its way to my good opinion. My attention was first called to it some eight months ago by a patient of mino Although I was well ac quainted with the superior ezcellenco of your other plaster and antisopllc dressing, made especially for tho profession, tho Benson's was comparatively new to mo. I had heard, however, of its merits as a remedy, in cases of Lame Back, Local Rhoumatism, Neural gia. Congestion of tho Bronchial Tubes and Lungs. Dyspopsia, Torpid Liver and tho like afioctions, and havo since begun to experi ment with it personally. I find BENSON'S CAPCINE PLASTER an exceptionally clean ly plaster to use, and rapid in its action. Many tests of its qualities, made in my own family and among my patients havo convinc ed me that thero is no single article so valu able for popular use, nor so helpful in the diseases I have named. Should you desire to do so, you may use my name to that effort. Vory truly yours, U.n.KANE,A.M..M,D. The genuine havo tho word CAPCINE cut in the center. Price 25 cents.
