In- Ground Hocr. a Cherokee citizen of the Indian nation, has been fonnd guilty of murder by the Choctaws and sentenced, to be executed Sep tember 20. The "passing away" of Ground. Hog -will undoubtedly be in the usual Indian manner, which is by shooting. In this way the Mormons resemble the Indians, thougli the Mormons used to, and probably do yet, allow a condemned man some preference, giving him a choice be tween being shot or hanged. The In dian has a horror of hanging. He considers it a dog's death and has doubts about his entering the happy hunting grounds with a broken neck. So, though Ground Hog has been sentenced in the Choctaw nation, as he is of their first cousin s family, the Cherokees, he will be allowed to "pass away" at the end of the rifle. It is quite possible that (if he is not an unreliable renegade) he will be al lowed to return home unattended and attend to his farm and family duties until the day of execution. It is quite possible that a date in Septem ber may be fixed upon to afford him ample time to "lay by1' his corn and get things fixed up around home. If this is so, he will be under no sur veillance, but simply gives his word that he will be on hand atsome speci fied spot on the 20th. In the interim he will go about his business in his usual manner, and it will be a breach of etiquette to mention the matter to him. On the 20th Ground Hog will ap pear at the appointed hour and place, neatly dressed and with his hair oiled and plaited. He -will be the most un concerned person present. His moth er, if he has one living, will fix his hair, and pet him something after the fashion of a child. After awhile a man will whisper a word to Ground Hog. Then Ground Hog -will arise and Baunter off to an open place, his mother and others will go away, and a man not seen before and probably some cousin of Ground Hog's, will come out of the brush, with a rifle in his hand and walking up to him with a piece of charred wood, make a mark on Ground Hog's white cotton shirt, right over the heart. Then, without a word, at about five paces distant, he .will send a bullet at that mark, and Ground Hog will be with his .Mam- ton. If Ground Hog is a church member, which it is quite likely he is, either Methodist, Episcopalian or uamoiic, ne wiu receive unnstian burial, and quite possibly in a coffin, though more probably in a red and black blanket Whether Christain or pagan, it is pretty certain that in a quiet and rather secretive way a bow and arrows, and perhaps a rifle, will be wrapped up with Mm in either cof fin or blankets, and, no matter how good a Christian, quietly off by them selves the relatives will kill a dog or two, and the mother that bore him will plaster ashes and mud upon her head, and with her hands clasped at the back of her neck, grovel her head in the dust of the prairies as she bows toward the setting sun.
