Suffering of a California Prospector.
Wixxepeq, Aug. 8th. W. B. Mc
Bride, of Chicago, who lias arrived
here from a trip to the Bocky Moun
tains, brings "word that a man named
William Owen., a California miner,
was found bv some railway navvies
neir Kicking Horse river a few clays
ago in a famished and partially de
mented condition. Owens said he
started on June 13th, with Joseph
"Williamson, from Kamloops, on a
prospecting trin. esnectin" to strike
the Columbia river, but their supply
of provisions gave out before reach
ing there. They traveled sk days
and a half without food, when "Wil
liamson laid down and died. Owens
then cut strips of flesh from his dead
companion s legs which he ate spar
ingly and proceeded on his tramp,
He had been living sis days on hu
man flesh when found, and still had
a quantity of dried flesh in an old
handkerchief. He was very weak
and emaciated and told his story
with difficulty. He repealed the hor
rible details on several occasions and
all who heard him are convinced that
the story is true. He had a large
roll of bills with him. The police
have taken the matter in hand nnd
will investigate it
"Very Like a Whale."
Capt. Frank Pierce, an old whale
man of New London, Conn., gives
this solution of the way the yarn about
a black hump-back whale being seen
off Block island started: He was on
steamer Block Island and - they were
lying still off the north end of the
island, in the focr, while the captain
of the steamer was listening to get
his bearings from the fog whistle on
snore. The current swept the steam
er down near the Clav Head can buoy
a large, black, conical shaped af-
iair wnicu was dancing up and
down, now under the water and now
out. As the steamer near the buoy
it shot up on the crest of a wave and
came hissing for two-thirds of its
length out of the water, throwing a
cioua or spray and spume above it.
"The-e-re she blows!" sang out Cap
tain Pierce, halt involuntarily, and
immediately the passengers rushed
to the side of the boat to see the
whale. By this time the buoy TTas
soaring upward on another giant
wave and "swish-swashed very like a
whale." "And it is imnossible now."
says Captain Pierce "to make the
jB lock islancrs passengers believe that
tney aid not see a real live whale,
chock full of oil"
Ilnnting Condors.
The Chilian government has de
clared a war of extermination against
the condor. If offers a reward of 85
for every condor killed. The hunting
of this bird of prey has, itnder the
circumstances, become a lucrative
business, though it seems doubtful, if
one considers ihe astounding powers
of the bird and its wonderful habits.
that the government can or will ever
succeed in destroying the species at
any price. A southern paper in speak
ing of this matter, says: "Shooting
tne conaor on the wing is almost out
of the question; for it sails at altr
tndes far beyond the reach of the
human eye, and roosts on peaks un
measurably above the clouds. It has
been seen at altitudes of 20.000 feet.
It haunts the whole western slope of
tne Antics not only Uhili, but Peru,
Bolivia and Patagonia. Latterly the

PILES! PILES! PILES!
A SURE CURE FOUKD AT LAST!
NO ONE NEED SUFFER.
A sure cure for Blind, Bleeding
Itching and Ulcerated Piles has been
discovered by Dr. "Williams (an Indi
an Bemedy,) called Dr. William's In
dian Pile Ointment A single box has
cured the worst chronic cases of 25
or 30 years standing. No one need
suffer live minutes after applying this
wonderful soothing medicine. Lotions
instruments and eleotuaries do more
harm than good. "William's Indian
Pile Ointment absorbs the tumors,
allays the intense itching, (particular
ly at night after getting warm in bed,)
aots as a poultice, gives instant relief,
and is prepared only for Piles, itching
of the private parts, and for nothing
else.
Bead what the Hon. J. M. Coffinber
ry of Cleveland says about Dr. "Wil
liam's Indian Pile Ointment: I have
used scores of Pile Cures, and it af
fords me pleasure to say that I have
never found anything which gave
such immediate and permanent relief
as Dr. "William's Indian Ointment
Hon. Judge "W. P. Coons, Maysville,
Ey., says: "I have suffered for years
with itching piles, and have used
many remedies. I have used Dr. "Wil
liam's Indian Pile Ointment and been
cured while every other remedy has
failed." For sale by all druggists and

Gentlemen: Like most of my profession, 1

BENSON'S CAPCINE POROUS PLASTER
has broken through tho barriers and won its

other plaster and antiseptic dressing, made
especially for tho profession, tho Benson's
was comparatively now to mo. I had heard,
howover, of its merits as a remedy, in cases
of Lame Back, Local Rheumatism, Neural
gia. Congestion of tho Bronchial Tubes and
Lungs. Dyspepsia, Torpid Liver and tho like
affections, and havo sinco begun to experi

Many tests of its qualitiesmado in my own
