f5f -.t?af?" " r"TtT-iST- -' -STr7-" -T .Fiy CO She gmtjj gtotfau. ASTORIA, OREGON: TIIURSnAY-... .AUGUST 14. 1884 It is about time to spring the usu al campaign stories on 3en Butler. "Why lias lie escaped thus far? Ik Russia the girls carry dynamite in their back hair. It is safe to as sert that those maidens never attempt roller skating. 1 T Cleveland is accused of indulging in the odoriferous cigarette. This charge, like many others, vill doubt less end in smoke. A petrified forest has been dis covered in Arkansas. It is believed that it is the paradise of paralyzed presidential booms. The mitigating circumstances pleaded in Governor Cleveland's case by his champion, the Evening Post, is that the lady was a widow. The Cleveland organs are drawing the line between a man's private life and his public acts. Which, reminds the St Louis Qlobe-Demoemt of the story of a bishop who reproved a clergyman for swearing. "It is the man, and not the priest, who swears," was the reply. "But," said the bishop, "when the devil gets the man, what will become of the priest?" Chinese gongs, tom-toms and drag ons do not scare European soldiers, and pigtails fail to inspire awe. The drunken British tar has been known to put to flight an entire company of Celestial infantry, and a barrel of boiling pitch to weaken a boat's crew of their best marines. The French have now stood about as much parlez vooincr as they feel inclined to swal low. Their decks are cleared for action, and unless Tching-Chow, One Lung, Ting-a-Ling, and the other ad visers of the tea cabinet make up their minds to fork over the needful there is going to be a storm in a tea cup. The president of the United States enjoys one great advantage over the crowned heads of Europe. He can go fishing. If when a crowned head felt uneasy he could go and bob for eels, or cast a fly, he would experience a feeling of calm serenity to which he is a stranger. But it is impossible for the czar to bait a hook without feeling that a nihilist is watching him; or for Queen Victoria to land a trout without imagining that it is loaded. There is no rest for the crowned head. It must either sub mit to supervision or prepare to de-. part in small pieces. "When a presi dent desires to be alone he can be so; a crowned head cannot. An Ohio farmer is credited with saying that a cow can be cured of kicking by catching hold of her in the act If a cow can be cured of this objectionable practice why could not a similar cure be tried in the case of a bolter? "When the ticket is placed in front of him a regular sup porter might stand behind him ready to catch his leg before it kicked. The same treatment might be tried with the arm. When a bolter raised hi? arm with the intention of bringing it down upon the nominee a watchful henchman might catch it from be hind. It would be impossible, of course, to stop tongues from wagging but by grabbing hold of the left ear at a critical moment a counter-irritant would certainly be created. The proposal made by the British military authorities to establish pig eon stations sucreests the idea that these winged messengers might be utilized during the campaign. Not only migh t they act as messengers be tween distant points, but the number employed on each side might serve to indicate the state of the canvass. "White-crested pigeons might carry the Blaine dispatches, and fantails the Cleveland. The Greenback party would probably employ pouters, and tumblers would be especially useful in disaffected or uncertain districts. As it will be necessary for Schurz to employ aerial messengers, the solemn conscientious crow would no doubt willingly respond. He is not a dove, but he would do his duty faithfully. Campaign managers are indebted for a good idea to a member of the Clan Cameron, who appeared at a Scotch gathering the other day with some handsome eagle feathers in his cap. All the candidates and their followers want to wear feathers in their caps. They cannot all don the feathers of our national bird. These must be reserved for the successful candidate in November. Still there are many birds to choose from. Feathers from the ordinary barn yard rooster would be significant and becoming to the Blaineites. Being a bachelor, Governor Cleveland might prefer the bird of paradise. A hawk's wing would no doubt suit Black John, and the Indiana statesman's crest would Tvell become a feather from the tail of a heron. Nothing less than the entire appendage of a peacock "would satisfy Ben Butler. Is the wing of a crow waiting for John Kelly? BORN.
