T , MIKE MEYER. Astoria, July 1C.18SL m f J V. jJ L ZSZA The Dreadful Cholera. Marseilles, July 31. Of a total number of deaths in France from cholera this j-ear, probably a great majority died inside o nine hours after tbey -were seized "with tbeir ill ness. Some havo not died until after being sick a week or more, but the majority of cases were settled one way or the other -within eight or ten hours. At the start there is diar rhoea and vomiting. This usually lasts but a short time. Then follows cramps and icy chills, and this stage has commonly been reached by the time the patient has arrived at the hospital. If the circulation can then be restored and kept up, by the use of ten or fifteen grammes of acetate of ammonia and the same quantity of alcohol, and by violent rubbing, there's some chances of re covery, though the chance is slight. But if the circulation cannot be kept up death is certain. In the last stages some patients are delirious, while others enter into a comatose condition, but tho latter part of the disease is generally a frightful thing to behold, it is simply hellish torture. Pen Portrait of Ben. the Bold. It was great fun to see Ben Butler roll out of the dining room at the Palmer LTouse last week. In the first place Butler is the homeliest and awkwardest creature in the country. His face is repulsive, and as he wad dles along he impresses you as being the most inferior-looking object you ever set eyes upon. He wears baggy pantaloons in which his leg3 flop about like the flippers of a seal. Ben's legs are curious contrivances; they must be without knee cap3, for they bend out backward like the hind legs of a quadruped. Chh-uyo Keirs Chicagoans, who indulge in too copious libations of stimulants, have discovered that taking a Turkish bath is one of the quickest and most effectual ways of sobering oil. There is a bathing establishment in Chi cago that keeps open all night for the purpose of sobering up citizens who do not care to go home drunk aud disturb the pence of the household, or wake up with nwcllcd heads in the morning. The process is called in the uncultured phraseology of Chicago, '"biling 'em,' and the keeper of the baths says a large business is done. It is claimed for the "biling'' process that a very bad case of drank can have all the liquor sweated out of him iu five hours aud sent home with a steady step and a clear head, able to make a logical excuse to his wife aud resume work ou time nest morn ing. This discovery will destroy the force of tho phrase, "drunk as a biled owl," which Matthew Arnold found to be very common in Chicago, for it is evident that if "biling"' will make a Chicago man sober it wonld have the same effect on an owl. Quite a number of Pointers went to the circus at Astoria last -week. A river lumberman was on the boat with hi3 girl, going to the circus and as happy as a clam; but when the boat landed at Oak Point there was a blonde yonngman walked aboard who quietly and unceremoniously look the lumber man's girl from him. The lumberman went 011 to the circus, all the same, and rejoices that his expenses were lessened and that he is a wiser if not a happier man. He says that the most wonderful sight he saw on the trip was that blonde young man's cheek; and says it he ever starts any- wnere with a young lady again he will not go toward Oak Point; but he is wiser, the girl ought to bo pleased, the Oak Pointer took tho cake, and all is well, we suppose. My attention was first called to it somo eight months ago by a patient of mino Although I was well ac quainted with tho superior oxcellonco of your other plaster and antiaoptic dressing, mado specially for tho profession, tho Benson's was comparatively now to mo. I had heard, however, of itsmoritsasa remedy, in casos of Lamo Back, Local Rheumatism, Neural gia. Congestion of tho Bronchial Tubes and Lungs. Dyspepsia, Torpid Liver and tho liko affections, and havo sinco began to experi ment with it personally. I find BENSON'S CAPCINE PLASTER an exceptionally clean ly plaster to use. and rapid in its action. Many tests of its qualities, medo in my own family and among my patients havo convinc ed me that thoro is no singlo nrticlo so valn ablo for popular uso, nor so helpful in tho diseases I havo named.
