CZ1 hc Sa iMtotfim. ASTOKIA, OREGON: WEDNESDAY-. .JULY SO, 16S4 FOLLY ON ICE. Let the pole rest The pathways leading to its supposititious site are strewn with bones. Sorrow lies en shrined around its graves. Treasure and toil have been wasted in the fruitless effort to solve a problem which when solved might be of little practical value. "What if the pole was discovered? It would be impos sible for all save a few intrepid and experienced mariners to get there. Let the pole" sleep. Leave it to th$ bears, and walruses, to the strange wild lights which illumine these glassy wilds with the spectres of the ages. If dreamy and restless scien tists and mariners with a taste for cold and blubber must go, let other nations send them. There is better and far more urgent work for Ameri can brains and American seamanship to do a little nearer home. No president of the United States has ever worn only a mustache dur ing his tenure of office. From "Wash ington down to Lincoln all had smooth faces with the exception of a -few who wore semi-side-whiskers. Lincoln was the first president who indulged in a beard, but had a clean- shaven upper lip; while Grant, Hayes and Garfield woro full beards. About half a century ago smooth faces were as much in vogue as smooth-tongued politicians are at the present time. Then a man with a mustache was looked upon unfavorably and could not have been elected. Now the larger and more luxuriant the mus tache the more popular the candidate. Look at Logan, for instance. His facial adornment is of the most ex travagant size, yet he is exceedingly popular among the admirers of manly beauty. There is Cleveland, also, with his dainty, drooping mustache, without which his handsome face would look like a full-moon. As looks have a great deal to do with the candidate's popularity it is no wonder that Bayard, Bandall, Car- lisle and other clean-shaven aspirants were ruthlessly rejected by fickle fortune. . An old gentleman of "Wilkes, Ga., has in his possession an old Tippe canoe (1810) hat with a log cabin on one side, and hatters who are now on the outlook for novelties might find the idea valuable. A white plume will nod of course from the Blaine chapeau with a cowering British lion just under it. A neat thing in Black Jack hats might be adorned with the figure of a wigwam, with perhaps a few Zuni Indians thrown in for stage effect. The Cleveland hat will bear the crest of the noble reformer, with the picture of an elevated rail road locomotive and a rheumatic car conductor underneath. The Hend ricks helmet might carry the figure of a fishing basket, two rods rampant or something of that kind. The bar rel hat would make a highly service able campaign covering; so would a straw hat lined with tin. Bricks of all sizes and patterns will be fashion able during the summer and falL Adornments for the Tammany hat cannot be designed until John Kelly opens his mouth. The campaign mathematician Las arrived. After sitting for several weeks with a vinegar towel round his head ho has proved to his own satisfaction, by mathematical formula, that Cleveland and Hendricks are the chosen men. There are fifteen letters in Grover Cleveland, and fif teen in Thomas Hendricks; add Ste phen to Grover Cleveland, and there are twenty-two letters. Things which are equal to tho same thing are equal to one another. Therefore Cleveland is to be our twenty-second president Q. E. D. But tho opposition math ematician is yet to be heard from. "There are letters in the names of Blaine and Logan which, if tnrned and twisted into certain combina tions, will also place these illustrious men in the presidential chairs. 'Strange though it may appear, the Plumed Knight and Indigo John received their first lickings at school exactly at the same age to a day. Upon that day it has been discovered their respective mothers baked the same kinds of pies at the same hour. Both pies were pumpkin. It is said that restless eyes which cannot look a person steadily in the face denote a deceitfnl, designing mind, while gray eyes signify dignity, intelligence, and excellent reasoning faculties. Such theories are apt to cause considerable disturbance in the community where they are pro mulgated. TakeJBen Butler's orbs, for instance. Everybody knows that they are not only restless, but lack the certainty of looking anybody .steadily in the face. Yet thefr owner is a bold, straightforward man, full of good impulses, incapable of deceit and only designing so far as Presiden tial preference is concerned. As for the signification ascribed to gray eyes it is simply preposterous. Nearly every cat has optics of that color, and yet nobody ever saw a member of the feline tribe that did not possess all ihe characteristics of a demon in dis gu5se. AVa rule the eye is no more a criterion q character than a single Hair is of the strength of the butter m which it is found. Each party is dot? assiduously as serting that the country will go to destruction without it Perhaps it will be just as well for the people to wait a little while before they begin to worry. A new variety of potato bug has appeared in Minnesota, and political agitators are accusing both the presi dential candidates of being the direot cause of the unwelcome visitor. . Dit. Hammond thinks a man or wo man should have experienced emo tion before either of them is able to write a novel. "What a novel John Kelly could write. The political orator will soon begin to "point with pride" and "view with alarm." But he really don't mean all he says. BORN. At Gray's River. W. T.. July 20, to the wife of Tlios. A.
