Never before, in the third of a cen tury since settlement has been in creasing in this region, has there been such a summer ns this wo are now en during. There is a tradition among ancient ones among pioneers that there was a summer previous to 1850 we have heard that it was 1818 when it rained all summer so con stantly that no grain crop was saved. That was not a time when Oregoni ans had begun to feed the world to any large extent Of course, it was a misfortune to early comers to find their harvests hindered or destroyed. Now, it we can form an opinion of the result of recent protracted rains, they hae brought calamity on many patient and long suffering people. Never before do we know of any such July rains as we have had of late. Much of the hay crop was cat and exposed to all the rains. Whole fields of magnificent winter wheat lie prostrate and can only be saved with difficulty. To very many we fear it is indeed a calamity they will deeply mourn, but it can hardly equal the loss by rust some years ago. The evil is not unmixed or unmitigated, however. The pastures have revived and gardens and orchards have im proved. "We see in market the larg est and finest frmt ever known, hi Oregon. Onr own experience is that fruit is acquiring great excellence as well as size. But these are secondary when we realize that great staples are damaged so seriously. Tho loss of early wheat, whatever it may be, is in part compensated for by the gain of late sown crops. "We can hope for prosperity notwithstanding all the losses certain to be incurred. There is greater variety of production than a few years ago and we can only hope that the rains will soon cease and give us opportunity to gather up the fragments that are left. Willum ette Farmer. Value of Milk to Youn AnimaK To wean a calf as soon as it cap crack corn and eat grass is to wean it earlier than nature intended, and earlier than it is profitable to wean it. The same rule applies to a litter of pigs. Abundance of milk at calving and farrowing time can only be se cured by anticipating the drain and keeping the flesh of the dam up to a reasonably high standard during the winter, and feeding liberally during the flow. The parent animal that starts with a full flow, because of be ing in a condition to make this possi ble, can, without undue trouble, have the flow kept up to the maximum, bnt if she starts in a low condition, with an udder meagerly filled, she will not be likely to rise to a high standard of milk production during any portion of the spason. Th Popular Approval Of the now famous Syrup ot Figs as the most efficacious and "agreablc prepara tion ever offered to the" world as a cure for Habitual Constipation. Biliousness, Indigestion and kindred ills, has been won by the wise plan pursued by the California Fig Syrup company. Know ing that one remedy truly beneficial in its effects on the system, and at the same time pleasant to the taste, will meet with a rapid sale, the Company, through its agent for Astoria, W.E.
