Franklin, administrator of the estate of Thomas Savage, deceased, gives notice of sale on the 18th of August. Chas. Turk, who was shanghaied on board an English vessel some time ago, has reached the chalk cliffs of Albion in safety. The American bark Xacesink, 7L'4, of Newcastle, Maine, Weeks, master, ui days from Hongkong arrived m yesterday afternoon, with rice, etc. There are thirteen prisoners in the county jail. One of them, a Chinaman, has refused to eat anything, evidently not liking 'Melicau man's grub, and is pining away. No livelier place on the northwest coast than the water front of Astoria. Ocean steamers, sailing vessels, colliers, river steamers of all sizes, and hundreds of sailing craft make a busy scene. The orders relieving "Chaplain Scott have been temporarily suspended. lie will preach to-morrow morning and evening in the Baptist church. The evening lecture will bo upon "the effect of praise in life." Someone without the fear of the law before his eyes is alleged to be going around the coantry serving papers and claiming to be Deputy Sheriff. He was at Jewell yesterday. If Sheriff Ross gets after him denials will be In order. Six canneries shut down yesterday and eight more will, it is thought, follow suit to-day. The fact that 1,520 boxes of tin were received on the Columbia yesterday looks as though a goodmairymore salmon would be packed between now and next Thursday. Yesterday evening's Independent con tains a sensibly written editorial, pre sumably from Mr.Howell. The Astobiak reciprocates his sentiments in relation to honorable competition, and is glad to know that he possesses the instincts of a gentleman and the wish to act on the square. The Western Union Telegraph com pany's offioe is in sweet seclusion, up stairs in the Pythian building. For the convenience of the business public as well as the interests of the company, there should bo a deliverj' office on the ground floor. The Astoria office now pays first rate and is served third rate. The Miles will give an unusually fine excursion tomorrow. In the morning she will leave Gray's dock at fifteen minutes to eight, Astoria time, for Ft. Stevens, the capo and Ilwaco, returning at four o'clock. She will then make a second trip to the cape, returning at G-30. This will give everyone a chance for a good time and plenty of leisure. A fair audience greeted the popular Ben Cotton combination at Occidental hall last evening, in the sterling play of "True Devotion." The parts were well sustained and the performers enthusi astically applauded. Ben Cotton is one of the originals. A generation ago he delighted thousands, and ho is just as hearty and mirth-provoking to day as years and years ago when, with Joe Murphy and little Lotta, he took San Francisco by storm. To-day the plav will be repeated. Rescue No. 2's engine is out of service, the Astoria Iron Works being engaged in putting in a new steel boiler. Mayor Hume, realizing the necessity for full pro tection against fire, yesterday telegraphed to Mayor Chapman of Portland, asking for one of Portland's steam fire engines for temporary service. Mayor Chapman telegraphed back that the engine was at the service of the city of Astoria, pro vided the marine insurance on the engine was guaranteed. This was done, and an answering dispatch said that the engine would be sent down on the Wide West this evening. LIFE SAVING SERVICE OFTHECOLWIBIA. Major T. J .Blakeny, the superintendent of the life service on the Pacific coast, arrived here yesterday on his semi-annual tour of inspection. This gentleman is an indefatigable worker and takes the greatest personal interest in the depart ment over which he presides. He is con stantly endeavoring to increase the efficiency and extent of the life saving service on this coast, and is successful in his efforts. His particular attention has been given to the Columbia river and vicinity, and he is enabled by recent ac tion of congress to put some of his ideas into execution. He hopes now to be able to placa the Shoalwater bay sta tion in better trim than it has been, and goes to Ft. Canby this morning to see about engaging a life crew to serve from the 1st of August. He has been empow ered to hire a crew for the year round, but the small wages that Congress in its wisdom deems sufficient, (40 a month) is no inducement to men during the fish ing season; it may be that in the course of time the pay will be increased and there will be a capable crew at the capo the entire year. Furnished Kooiiis o Jtcnf. Inquire at Mrs. Campbell's, over Gem Saloon. Stop That Cough By going to J.E. Thomas's and getting a bottle of Leroy's Cough Balsam. It wilt, cure you. Groceries Crockery and Iass wrarc In latest styles and at lowest prices at Mrs. R. Zimmerman's, corner Main and Squomoqua. A first class stock of fam ily groceries. PIEE AT TAOOMA. Thirty-two Buildings Burned. Loss, $32,000 -$15,000 Insured. isl'KCIAI. TO THK ASTOIHAX. PoinxAND, Aug. 25. The Tacoma fire started in the American House, shortly after midnight, burning thirty-two framo buildingp. The loss is about forty thousand dollars, fifteen thousand of which is covered by insurance. The loss is distributed among a large number of people. The block destroyed was the first one built in the city and contained most of the saloons. No particulars of names are yet received here. The first reports were much exaggerated. A MMV LIFE .STATION AT THE .MOUTH OF THE COLUMBIA. Information comes from Washington thai in the closing hours of congress was passed an appropriation for the building of a new life station at the mouth of the Columbia. The clause of location says that the new station .shall be at or near Point Adams. This is something of the utmost practical value to Astoria and the Columbia river. Under the able manage ment of Al. Harris the crew at the cape has often distinguished itself. The last time that comes to the recollection of the writer was when the Queen was stranded on Clatsop spit last September. Every one remembers the splendid service then rendered by Captain Harris and his bravo men, and that officer's- only regret was that tho means at his disposal were not more effective. The now station will be immediately begun, and a competent crew stationed therein for tho season of 18S4-'8";, Fur ther particulars will bo given in a f6W flays. HKCLUMIXO CLATSOP BEICH. F. 1. llcnnessy, whose mission to re claim the desolate sand wastes of Clatsop beach, has been already announced at length in The AsroniAN, is at tho Sea side making preparations for beginning the important work. It seems that at some time in the past someone from somewhere brought some Scotch broom and planted it there. It waxed and grew luxuriantly and now covers a wido area. Mr. Hennessy proposes to pay twenty-five cents a pound for all the seed of this Scotch broom that is brought to him. This he will sow on the beach, beginning at a point south and west of Pt. Adams light house and expects to make a good start at the work of reclamation this season. Scotch broom, so it is said, is one of those things that once started is hard to kill. and the chances for its successful growth in thnt sand are considered very good. That sowing will be supplemented by the placing of bunch grass and other vege table growth until tho present shifting sands will no longer obey the sway of the wind, and a hard, firm stretch of green will replace the now unsightly dunes. Time was when Clatsop county residents grew luxuriant growths of potatoes and other products below Ft. Stevens where now breaks the surge, and should the present plan prove the success that is an ticipated, it will bo but a question of time when the great strotch of desolate wind-blown beach, and the shoal water beyond, will again "blossom as the rose." Vhit of Caj.Uln While. Capt. White, assistant" superintendent of the life-saving service on this coast, and inspector of the marine, arrived on yesterday's steamer. He is looking after government properly 111 these parts, and from here he goes to the Sound. Among other things on tho programme is the re pairing of the Richard Rush, putting in new boilers, etc. Just what will be done about the Slmbrick is problematical. The Tom Corwin, the finest and stanchest vessel in Pacific waters, belongs at Astoria, but is kept cruising in Arctic waters, and it is a shame for our national government as well as an injustice to the lower Columbia that such an old hulk as the Shubrick is kept in commission, while hundreds of thousands of dollars of the people's money is appropriated to far less deserving objects. Capt. Whito goes to the Cape this morning. Death or Kcar-Aihniral Kmnionw. Bear Admiral Emmons died on tho 23rd, at Princeton, New Jersey. He took part in the Wilkes exploring expedition, and was on the sloop-of war Peacock when it was lost al the mouth of tho Columbia river. He commanded a party consisting of a scientific corps of officers, sailors, hunters and trappers, on an ex- Eloring tour of the country south of the blumbia to the head-waters of the Sac ramento, and thence through California to San Francisco. He took a distinguish ed part in tho late war; was a member of the Loyal Legion, and society of Califor nia pioneers, taking active part in the latter. He was buried at Baltimore yes terday. JOHNSON'S CYCL01E!IIA. We have no hesitation in pronouncing Johnson's C3clopaHlia the most complete work for Americans ever published. It is complete in four volumes or eight parts, clear print, condensed fact, full of technical explanations of scientific mat ters, while on every subject there is a fullness of data that leaves nothing to be asked for. We consider it the most valuable ac quisition that any man can make to his library, especially if there are any chil dren in the family, who are always seek ing after knowledge. To the student of American history we especially commend it, for in this book is found a more comprehensive col lection of facts, compiled by the bast American authority, that can bo found in any like work wo have ever seen. It is a -work that should bo in every family household in this country, as it has been published at a price that brings it within the reach of all. Drop Mr.C.H.Libby the general manager for this excellent work a card, and ask to see it. Ho will be pleased to call on anj" of dur citizens with a sample copy, or show them the work at his room at the Occident hotel. Reduced Prices. Among those who came to Astoria last Wednesday to see Cole's circus, was a party from Ft. Clatsop, consisting of E. C. Jeffers, his aged mother, his two boys, and Miss Hibbard, of Portland. The show over, they started back in tho plunger for Smith's landing on Lewis and Clarke's. As they sailed they talked of tho show and the wonders they had seen, the boys being especially delighted with the strange animals on exhibition. Suddenly amid the shadows on the water one ot them discerned a blacK oiect that moved steadilv toward tho point. Heading the plunger in that direction it proved to be a bear. Air. deuers imme diately attacked his bearship. and bruin returned the charge, the fight lasting nearly an hour. At one time it looked as if the bear was about to get tho best of it, having succeeded in getting his fore paws into the boat with the charitable intention of upsetting it. Finally after breaking three oars over his head, Mr. Jeffers, with tho assistance of his eldest son, succeeded in dispatching him. He was then drawn into the boat and the party reached home in safely with 2.V) pounds of -dead bear meat a a trophy of a mot singular adventure. LUACKKMNU THE FISH THUS. Astobia, July 21. IB&l. E:. Asteiuan: Having seen a short time since in your paper considerable space given to a report of a meeting of the "fishermen"' on the ''trap question," I have waited to see if some more able pen than mine would not say something for the said traps. But as all seem disin clined to speak I must "have my say." So, here goes. In the first place it is claimed that these traps are dangerous to life and property. Admit it; but so is farming. Your horse may run away and smash j'oar buggy, and oven lull you or your family on my fence or my apple tree. Count the fish caught by trap3, tho lives it costs directly or in directly (and you maj' believe mo when I say that the lives lost arc overestimated) and compare tho record with that of the gill nets, Gveu what is made public (and that wo all know is not near all the loss), and the comparative safety of the two is too patent to admit of controversy. Again, it is said that the traps obstruct navigation. Where to, and from where, pray? Around behind Chinook spit and along the shallow, dangerous beach of Baker's bay? Of course it is not to be for a moment supposed that a frail gill net drifting in the water is any obstruc tion, and yet how often we see scows, tugs, aye, and even good sized steamers, 'gilled ' in these nets, and so completely as to require hours to disentangle them? Then about the southwest blow on a flood tide. Ask any man who knows the Columbia bar where tho shelter is from a southwester, and he will tell you first and best between Capo Hancock and II waco, next Sand island bay, and last, above Point Ellice, in Hungry har bor. But never Baker's bay above Uwaco. Where do the boats go that are swamped in tho north channel, and on Peacock spit with a southwester? Ashore in the back side of Baker's bay, and nearly always in splinters. Four went to pieces there in one night a short time ago, and a fifth was saved by some of these trap men. We are also taught that the traps tend to decrease tho run of salmon. Well, that would bo bad, sure enough! But now, Mr. Editor, just put yourself in our place. Here is a trap with enticing "lead," gaping "heart," deceptive "tun nel," and bewildering "pound," all ready to catch, hold, and deliver the unwary salmon, but yet, at the very gateway to the river is a gauntlet of gill nets, so un tiringly kept up and so intricately con structed, that the fish (except in stormy weather) are kept outside the bar. Don't you think that the part of the trap in re ducing the run of any future year is r-a-t-h-e-r insignificant.'' I do. As for this war on us, which has been opened by the destruction of McGowan's trap, I will simply say that I do not think it should be credited to the "citi zens of Astoria," or even of the United States, but to others, who have been led on by the false patronage and fine talk of designing men, who, some of them at least, have as much interest in tho mat ter as the man in the moon. THE ADAIR-OWENS WEDDING. Last night there were gathered at the First Congregational church many of Oregon's best pioneers and young peoplo to witness the marriage ceremony of Col. John Adair and Mrs. Dr. B. A. Owens. Tho famies of the bride and groom were well represented, there being the mother of the bride, father and mother of the groom, with a goodly number of other relatives. Promptly at 0 o'clock the bridal parly entered in the following or er der: The four ushers, Messrs. Hamilton Corbett, Hamilton Brooke, William Ott and James Goldsmith; Miss Maud E. Hobson, niece of tho bride, upon the arm of Mr. W.B.Adair, brother of the groom; Miss Mjt.i D. Abrahams, niece of the bride, upon the arm of Mr. Joseph N. Teal; and the bride and groom. The bride was dressed in cream colored, bro cade silk, with long watteau train, Queen Elizabeth collar, V shaped corsage, Span ish lace trimmings, ornaments, diamonds; hair a la Pompadour. Tho bridesmaids were dressed in croani colored nuns veil ing, with Spanish lace drapery: paarl or naments. As the party proceeded slowly up tho aisle, the organ, with Mr. E. S. Mayo at the keyboard, pealed out Mendelssohn's wedding march. The ceremony, by Rev. F. It. Marvin, was very impressive, the low music during the ceremony add ing to the solemnity of the service." Lnter in tho evening a reception was given at the residence of Mr. Hyman Abraham, No. G9 North Twelfth street, here a most pleasant evening was passfd. Colonel and Mrs. Adair leave this morning for Astoria, where they will spend a dav with the groom's father, General John Adair, and take the steamer State of California to-morrow morning for San Francisco. Iliey will be absent about six weeks, and upon their return will take up their resi dence in this city. Oregon ian, 25lh. What It Was that Surprised Mini. A firm in this city, says the San Fran cisco Commercial News, are in receipt of a postal card marked London, on the back of which was pasted tho following newspaper clipping from a London paper: We had a very good story told us, and which, unlike many good stories, is liter ally true. A gentleman from California is paying his first visit to London. Ho is a keen, sharp specimen of his keen, sharp race. Being asked which of tho wonders of London had the most astonished him, he replied without the slightest hesita tion, "The price of California tinned sal mon! I"have to paj Is per tin for the salmon where it is caught and tinned thousands of miles away, and I can buy it in London for G)d." What an amus iug idea this gases one of a true Ameri can! it was said. Hero was. a man who had been wandering amid the wonders of the grandest and most interesting city the world has ever known, full of the marvels of art and science, and almost every street associated with some great name or event, but the one thing that as tonishes his weak and narrow mind more than anything else is the cheapness of tinned salmon!
