Ik another column are presented the views of a correspondent concern ing the rights of fish trap osiers. Their side of the question as therein stated brings up no statements not made before. The question is one that depends for its presentation entirely on the point of view taken by the party dis cussing it The fishermen think that they are in the right; the trap owners maintain that they are in the right Let us see. The loss of life is the greatest objection. No one will deny that during the season now closing several good, steady men have lost their lives by reason of these traps. This is something that is con ceded by the most resolute defender of the traps. It is claimed without successful contradiction that the men who lost their lives in these traps would have been able to make shore in safety had it not been for unavoid ably running into those traps, cap sizing, and thus perishing miserably. Life is sweet, and the loss of one life, in spite of every effort on the part of the drowning man to save himself. is,in the minds of many, suf ficient reason for calling for the re moval of the traps. Self-interest also plays an impor tant part in this discussion. It is a well-known fact that "the traps hurt the fishermen's business; what hurts them hurts Astoria, and the existence of those fish-traps are believed by many to be of great detriment to this place Without going into details it amounts to this. The fishermen toil with very scant return through April and May. They take big chances; they lose their gear and all for very few fish. The first of June finds them still in debt About the time that a man can make decent wages, the traps begin to come into com petition with him. The trap owner goes to an Astoria canneryman and makes a contract that the canner will take all his fish (the fish erman has no such contract and has to take his chances.) Along in July comes a big run; the man in his boat who in May lived on Faith and in June lived on Hope until he was afraid that in July he would think of Charity, goes out to catch the big run; he has been under big expense and here is his chance to get a few dollars. But the traps are catching them "by the thousand, the canner, -who must keep up to his contract has all he wants and more too. and when the exhausted fisherman, weary with the toil of the night, but yet hopeful with the idea that he has made a good night's work, comes alongside to sell his fish in the early morning, the cannery- man is obliged to say, "I have all I vant The traps have filled my can nery." And the fisherman has to throw his fish away. This id no fancy sketch. Hundreds can testify that it is not at all overdrawn or exaggerated. Here is where the direct antagon ism comes in, and here is where the interests of this community come in direct conflict with the fish traps and the system they represent. It does not surprise the majority of persons to learn that one of the dole gates to the Chicago convention was rendered crazy by enthusiasm and ex citement Enthusiasm carried to too great an extent will unhinge the strongest mind; so will indigestion caused by eating crow or other un palatable bird. The mind of John Kelly, for example, has been sub jected to a terrible strain of late. If he were not a man of several hun dred horse power intellect he must inevitably have broken down. Even now he is said to be gloomy. His bright smile does not haunt Tam many still. And now crops out a number of names of gentlemen who are each willing that the Oregon Legislature should send him to the United States senate for six years. It is pretty gen erally conceded that Portland will furnish the coming senator as she did the last one, but all sorts of trades and combinations in and out of the capital city must first be made before the winning man is announced. The Walla Walla Union charges the Journal of that city with having sold out to the railroad company for a pass. That is a serious charge to bring against a newspaper, but one that can be easily proved or die proved. The Central Pacific Eailroad Com pany has sensibly resolved to sell no more land to anybody who will not guarantee to cultivate and improve It The British government would have made Commander Schley a bar on and Lieutenants Emory and Sly Knights Commanders of the Bawth. Seattle papers now concede that there was too much "boom" there last season, and that matters have now reached their leveL Govebnoe Cleveland's worldly possessions consists of 5,000 worth of personal property. He has no real estate. 'Astoeia is the healthiest city in the state; physically and financially. FOOD ADULTERATION. Chicago has a Citizens' Associa tion, an organization of business and professional men, whose aim is to promote the-general public good. It has recently given consideration to the subject of food adulterations, and its report must convince the trade that the committee is, at least, earnest in its -work. The report says -that the "adulteration of butter has bien car ried so far that the genuine article cannot be procured from the ordinary merchants in the commodity, nor from private manufacturers, except at a price far beyond its proper value.'' Passing from butterine, lard, cheese and watered milk, the re port names as among the principal adulterations imposed upon the public, the follewing: Sugar is adulterated and reduced in value with glucose. Coffee, when ground, often contains little of the mra berry, but is made up of a mixture of chiccory, beans, dandelion roots, rye or other cheap material. When green, it is often artificially colored, frequently with substances which are deleterious in their effects. Lard is adulterated in the process of refining by the introduction of terra alba (a white clay), vegetable oils and water. Candy is mostly made from glucose and the cheap candies entirely so. Ground spices are almost universally adulterated. In some cases the package contains no part of the condiment named, but only foreign material, flavored with the es sential oil of the genuine arti cle. Teas are mixed, and the grades brought down to increase the profits and foreign substances some times introduced, though in the lat ter case generally before they reach this country. Jellies of all kinds are commercial frauds. Their main ba sis is annual gelatine or apple jelly flavored with extracts. "These con ditions are not peculiar to Chicago, but are universal in the trade through out the country," says the Farmers' Review. Those conditions are not general on the Pacific Coast, Trade in oleomargarine has been totally suppressed. Our sugar is pure, and the use of terra alba as an adultera tion in the refining of lard is yet an unknown art Our teas are generally straight, and jellies generally, are ex actly as tney are represented.
