Orer two years ago, Lieut- Greely, witk an Arctic exploring party, sailed . to the shores of the Polar sea. Last aUifrwasdefcerxained to search for him0 and a relief expedition was fitted out under Commando Schley. .; It sailed from New York in April, and orvlist Thursday, the 17th, definite news was received at Washington that" the Greely party had been found. Of twenty-five who were with him, but five were alive, the remain- . der having perished from starvation and -exposure. ClJtCT. cjbkkly's kbpom to iiazzs S St. Johns, N. F., July 17. For. the. first time in three centuries Ifingland yields the honor of reaching the furthest point in the north. Lieut. Lookwood and Sergeant Brain erd, on May IS, reached Lockwood Island, lat 83 24', long. 44 58'. They law, from a 2,000 feet elevation, BO.-lA&d to the north or to the north- t but to the northeast Greenland yet extended, lost to view. At Cape Bobert Lincoln 1st, 83 5'. Lieut Lockwood was tured back in 1883 bv open water on the Greenland snore, the party barely esoaping drift ing inro me Jtroiar ocean, ur. iravey, in 1882, in following the Markham , .route, was adrift one day in the Polar oeean, north of Cape Joseph Henry, -and escaped to land, abandoning nearly everything. In 1882 I made spring, and later susimer trips into the interior of Greenland, discovering Lake Hazen, 60 by 100 miles in extent From the auaunit of Mount Arthur, 5,000 feet, . the contour of the land west of the "' Conger mountains convinced me that Grinnell land tends directly south. UEUTEfANT LOCKWOOD's EXPLORA TION. In 1883 Lieutenant Lookwood and Sergeant Bramard succeeded in cross ing Grinnell land, and ninety miles from Bearateaux bay, the head of Anchor fiord, struck the head of a -lord from the western sea.temporarily named by Lockwood Greely fiord, -Fwm the center of this fiord, in lat '80 30', lone. 78' 30'. Lieutenant Lookwood saw the northern shore, which terminated some twenty miles west, and the southern shore, extend if sosae fifty miles, with Cape Look woesome seventy miles distant, ap parantly separate land from Grinnell land. I. have named the new land Arthur. Lieutenant Lockwood fol lowed'the land some distance and re turned. In, March, 1884, Sergeant Long, while banting, looked from the north west side of Mount Carey to Bayes sound, seeing on the northern coast three capes westward of the furthest seenbyKares in 187G. The sound attends twenty miles further west 'Maen shown by the English chart, but is possibly shut in by land which showed up across the western end. The two years' station duties, ob servations and explorations, and the veireat to -Cape Sabine, were accom--flisfced without loss of life, disease, - lesions accident or even serious frost bHef, One scurvy was experienced atOBfr,-andbutone death occur- red from it last winter. Preserve tenderly the remains of the heroio dead, and prepare them according to your judgment and bring them home." W. E. CHANDLER Secretary of the Navy. hi A Lucky Dog. Bill Nye, the fnnny writer, is a lucky and an unlucky dog. He pioked up a bit of paper in the street on which was inscribed 2,684. He bought a ticket in a lottery of the same num ber and drew 820t000. This he in vested in a gold mme, and at the end of six months he took the poor debt or's oath. He then went to Cape May, and while walking on the beach he discovered a young lady sinking for the third time. He resoued her and received 310,000 from her father. That night he found the tiger .and had to borrow a quarter to get a breakfast with. Ho then took a job to put up a telephone wire, and while doing so he hit upon an idea which he sold to the company for 5,000. He spent 83,000 in solving the worth lessness of a new electric light He concluded for the first time in his life that he would salt the balance down in good real estate, so he bought a farm and went to work. He resolved to dig a well, and the third day he struck a vein of coal, and has been offered $50,000 for one-half his farm. Such is life. Economy of Life. The true economy of human life adjusts expenditures to a moral scale of values. De Quincey pictures a woman sailing over the water, awak ening out of sleep to find her neck lace untied and one end hanging over the stream, while pearl after pearl drops from the string beyond her reaoh; when she dutches at one just falling, another drops beyond discov ery. Our days drop one after another by our .carelessness, like pearht from a string, as we sail the sea of life, un til we learn that the waste of time is a more serious loss than the extrava gances against which there is such loud exolaim. The expenditure of a few dollars on taste is a small matter in comparison with the wasting of months and years by thousands who have every advantage society can of fer, and exact ever)' privilege it af fords as a right The following story is told of an American traveling in Paris. Having occasion to take a bath, his physician reoommended a wine'bath. In the employ of the establishment -there wasa colored man whom ho had known in America, and of him he inquired how they could afford to give a wine bath for seventy-five cents. "Why, massa," said 'the negro, "that wine has been in the bath room for one weekand you is the thirty-eighth pus- son that has bathed m it. "Well, 1 suppose they throw it away "when they are done with it?" "Why, no, massa; dey send it down stairs for de poor people, wno batne for twenty five cents." "And what do they do with it then?" "Bottle it up and send it to America, where they sell it lor nne irrencn wine." The attempt to reform the Coticrres sional Record and prevent the print ing ot speeones that were never de liveredjailed, and the Record is still issued, just as if congress was in bos sion, for the accommodation of ora tors who have nothing to say on the floor, but are anxious to appear olo au.ent in mint Soeeohes are still being made on the tariff, on the for feiture of railway grants, on the river and harbor bill, and on otner mess urea whicb'&ttracted.tha' attention of congress.
