With our Americani ides3 ot train ed railway service and tho demand for system, dispntoh and safety, it seems absurd to read tho criticisms of tho Mexican press which has al ready begun to demand that prefer ence should he given to Mexicans as employes on the Central Eailroad. El National, one of tho lending newspapers, reviews tho situation at length, and declares that his lack of politeness unfits the Americau for railroading, that his bluff manner and curt renlie3 constantly wound the sensitive Southern traveler, and hints broadly that he will do well to pack his "gripsack" and go home. This seems the added straw of in gratitude to the burden of dangers and disagreeabilities the American railroader in exile is now bearing. The Mexicans are undoubtedly the politest people on eartfi they have pelnty of time. One man or woman will keep a whole train of street cars waiting while they enjoy tho usual embrace, hand-shake and well-bred nothings of a Mexican leave-taking without one thought ot the inconven ience and loss of time they cause the remaining passengers. They blockade tho streets and curdle tho temper of pedestrians by the same process. It never occurs to them that the habit can be offensive or that they unwittingly outrage the rights of oth ers. Instead they sit in severe judg ment upon our lack of cordiality and national hrnsqnerie. The lower classes are horn pilferers. This fact alone makes railroading unusually dangerous. The high duties on steel and iron put a premium upon every obtainable pound, consequently, thoy draw out the spikes, steal the fish plates, and frequently they lug off the rails. I was told by a railroad man in Aguas Calientes that a couple of cars were discovered there one morning from which every bolt, bar, nail, nut, chain and rivet had been taken, so that they literally fell in pieces when removed. All this entails a degree of watching as harassing as it is nec essary. Consequently after adding the duty of watchman to his other labors the American railroad boy in exile rebels at being called unmanner ly, even if he does outrage Mexican custom and refresh himself occa sionally by honestly eating an orango on the platform. Corr. Han Fran cisco Chronicle. Parmers won't rush to Alaska. The method of cultivating tho potato there is peculiar. Tho ground is dug up and covered with a layer of kelp, and after this fertilizer has been ex posed to the air for a week or two it is dug under and the soil shaped into high, narrow beds and planted in shallow drills. Tho sun's heat alone is depended upon and every oppor tunity must ho given it to penetrate tho ground, which in that trigid country not only gives out no warmth of its own, but frequently remains frozen throughout tho year at a depth beyond tho influence of the sun's rays. This method of farming suc ceeds only in favorable seasons. The Popular Approval Of the now famous Sj'mp of Figs as the most efficacious and agreable prepara tion ever offered to the world as a cure for Habitual Conslipation..Biliousness, Indigestion and kindred ills, has been won by the wise plan pursued by the California Fig Syrup company. Know ing that one remedy truly beneficial in its effects on the system, nnd at the same time pleasant to the taste, will meet with a rapid sale, the Company, through its agent for Astoria, W.E.
