J.M.D, 6RAT wte,Jaaem,ig!H, Piotopjli Gallery An Ancient Trapper. Up a tributary of thePend d'Oreille river, on which "is situated Thompson Falls, is a Frenchman named Eapti3te Ducharne. Ho is 103 years of age, and first saw a railway ear last fiUl, when a train crossed the Coriacan de file, over which is the highest wooden bridge in the world. This man has a half-blood daughter at Fort Corville, ii) years old, of whom no always speaks as "my baby." Ducharne "was rspeaks 1 a member 01 (Jolonei Ashley s expeui- tion in 1802 and trapped for the com pany all that season. The following year he joined Bonneville and was with him until he disbanded. After that he trapped and sold furs to both the Hudson Bay and American Fur Companies. He ascended the Yel lowstone river in 1824 and paw the geysers, but, like the other trappers who saw portions of the wonderful scenery of the park, he was more in terested in furs than scenery, and never told any capable writer of what he saw. In Scotlond they have a curious way of fishing that takes the medal for the ease and repose with which it is conducted. The fisherman wo will say is after pike. Selecting a big goose from his barnyard, or half a dozen geese, as the case may be, he ties a baited hook and line about five feet long to their feet and on reach ing the water turns them in. The birds of course swim out, and the fisherman lights his pipo and sits down. In a few minutes a fish sees the bait and seizes it, giving tha goose a good pull. The bird starts for the shore at full tilt, frightened half to death, dragging the fish upon the bank, when it is unhooked. The lino being rebaited, the feathered fisherman is again sent out to try its luck. A flock of geese can make quite a haul in the course of a day, the human fisherman having only to take oil the game and bait the hooks, the pulling in and hooking being done by the birds. Parties who have been prospecting and surveying on tho south fork of the Puyallup river, TV. T., report game very abundant in that section. Deer, bear, and oougar are numerous, as are grouse and pheasants. Bear are so familiar as to frequntly visit camps in the night and help themselves to fresh and salt meats and any other kind of edibles that happen to be laying around loose. By to-day there will be but seven hours' staging between the Baker City branch of tho Oregon Bailway and Navigation company's railroad and tho Oregon Short Line. Tho distance between the two ends is now fifty miles. "Work is being pushed steadily ahead, and within a very short time another transcontinental line will "be completed. YOUXG MEX!-REAI) THIS.
