"Do your women customers bother you

strawberries. Here are some fresh ones

In the house Randall is opposed to the
insertion in the consular una diplomatic
bill of $250,000 for u state department
neutrality fund. This mori"ey"u is under
stood, the state department wishes to nse
to further negotiations for a treaty with
the Nicaraguan government, which shall
accord to the United States control of an
inter-oceanic canal-route across the Isth
mus. There is strong opposition to this
appropriation. Capt. Eads? who wants
to build a ship railroad across the isth
mus of Tehauntepec and representatives
of tho Panama canal enterprise, are here,
bitterlj oxiposing the n'ppropriation.
The representatives of the Nicaraguan
canal, on the other hand, are doing all in
their power to further it. This oppropri
ation was made by the senate in secret
session, and it is impossible for money
to be voted by the house in such a man
ner. A dispatch from Souoru, Cal., gives
particulars of ono of tho most complicat
ed tragedies probably that over occurred.
Edmund Gallagher, 22 years old, shot
Mrs- Otis Greenwood in tho face and
breast with a doublo-barreled Bhot-gun.
Her son Otis ran after Gallagher and
fired twice at him without affect. Robert
Watson pursued Otis Greenwood, and
the latter turned on Wntson and shot
him twice In tho heck and back. Watson
fell, whereupon Watson's sou opened fire
upon Greenwood, but the latter escaped
to Sonora, whero he surrendered. Learn
ing the facts, tho Bheriff started for tho
scenoand arrested Gallagher. Both he
and Greenwood wero lodged in jail. Mrs.
Greenwood and Watson have since died.
The tragedy was tho result of n dispute
about Watson running water across
Greenwood's mining claim. Mrs. Green
wood was tho widow of a once prominent
lawyer in tho locality. Tho others are
all respectably connected.

The abuse of reclamation privileges
has destroyed more friendly business re
lations than any other influence known
to tho trader. It is strange that some
equitable understanding of the rights of
shipper and consignee cannot be estab
lished and maintained, especially whero
both are obviously anxious to continue
the harmonious and profitable commer
cial relations which have 'existed between
them for years. In canned goods, heavy
reclamations have often threatened dis
astrous consequences to tho exporter who
has sent out his goods confident of the
return of a handsome profit on the con
signment. There is often some show of
modest)' in the presentation of an un
usually heavy demand, but in many in
stances, consignees will unblushingly pre
sent a claim which would consume not
only the brokerage but the packer's profit
as well. Arguments end explanations
follow, and it is a long time before the
matter is adjusted, and even then the
consummation is far from satisfactory to
either party concerned. A correspondent
of the London Grocers' Gazette, calling
attention to the unsatisfactory condition
of the canned goods trade in respect to
the matter of claims as at present exist
ing throughout the trade, says: "The sub
ject is one of great importance when we
consider tho large capital 'invested, the
enormous overturn, combined with a con
tinued annual increase in-tho demand
and consumption in this class of busi
ness. There appears to be a want of any
recognized rule or accepted prinoiple
throughout the trade on this head as' be
tween the buyers and sellers: and we have
ourselves experienced much difficulty in
arranging satisfactorily tho differences
which have frequently arisen between
the importer and tho purchaser after an
inspection and examination in bulk has
tafcen place, resulting in some instances
in renunciation of contract, coupled with
dissatisfaction and unpleasantness. A
ten per cent, examination is general rec
ognized as an average, but when this is
taken and the result proves unsatisfac
tory, in the opinion of the buvers or Hell
ers, as the case may be, a second exami
nation is demanded and taken with, as
often happens, a like result. Many brok
ers sell upon tho follewing: 'Allowances
to be settled on result of examination of
not Ies3 than ten per cent, of the cases for
average.' Bat, supposing the parties in
terested do not agree, and olect to have
the whole of tho bulk examined, who is
liable for the cost in the second instance?
Recently we had a case in point a sale
of a few thousand cases of salmon, sold
under the usual clause of ten per cent,
examination for blown, short and pricked
tins. The result, according to the buy
er's opinion, embraced the following in
the average: 'Blown,' 'short,' 'stained,'
'pricked, 'collapsed,' 'doubtful,' 'light,'
and showing claims amounting to over
three per cent upon tho whole parcel;
wheteas the importer's allowance was
equal to one-quarter per cent." The po
sition of the correspondent will be best
appreciated by those who, in recent ex-
Eeriences, have felt the burdon imposed
y one of tho peculiarly-adjusted modem
reclamations. California Grocer and
