claimed, will guarantee the suprem
acy of the United States upon the
isthmus, and will avert the possibility
of a foreign war for the control of
Central America and the maintenance
of the Monroe doctrine.

liquor drinkers shall be licensed, and
that any man so licensed shall wear

less a scheme on the part of some

ers, as men of different tastes would
require appropriate emblems.
Some very curious statistics as
to paper-making have recently been
compiled on the continent. It seems
that there are 3,9S5 paper mills on the
face of the earth, in which annually
1,904,000,000 pounds of paper 'are
manufactured. Half of this paper is
used for printing; 600,000,000 pounds
for newspapers only, the consump
tion of which has risen by 200,000,
000 pounds during the last ten years.
As to the consumption in different
countries, an average of 11 pounds
is used by an Englishman, 10
pounds by an American, 8 pounds by
a German, 7rf pounds by a French
man S pounds by nn Italian or
Austrian, 1 pounds by a Spaniard, 1
pound by a Russian, and 2 pounds
by a Mexican.

There is always a run on snake stories
during presidential years. They seem
to suit the spirit of the time. Repub
licans find in them a lesson which
they frequently fail to heed, and for
the average Democrat they hold a
fascination which cannot well be ex
plained. Snake stories are certainly
not pleasant reading, but neither are
the average convention speeches.
After the conventions the snakes will
be found, -where snakes are common

brutal attack on his memory and
