The elepbantand gorilla fly before them; the black- man runs for bis life as soon a3 tho ants aro seen. It is re lated by a traveler that as ho was go ing up one of the mouths of the Zambesi, ho saw a whole village sud denly deserted by tho inhabitants, who fled with all thev could earn- off, a proceeding which, as there was no ioe m sicht. rather puzzled him, till ho found they were fleeing from the ants. "When these ants enter a hut, they clear it of every living thing in a few minutes. Hugh cockroaches, almost as large as mice, centipeds, mice and rats are instantly devoured. A strong rat is killed in less than a minute and in another minute its bones are picked. A leopard dog, or deer is soon dispatched and devoured, ror tney Jail bv their numbers, liiey are quite half an inch long, and one variety is so strong that it will bite pieces clean out of the iiesb. Tliey possess, however, one meritorious quality they mortally hate, and, whenever they can, put to death the misohievous white ants which make such destruction in houses. In ad dition to these and the sand ants, which bite like scorpions, leaving a distressing pain behind them, there aro several varieties of flies which sting horribly, such as the jgogonai small gnats whose bites go through the tough hide of tho negros, causing a terrible itch; tho ibolai or gnats which sting as though with a needle.and whistle as they dash atyou; tho richouma, which fill themselves with your blood before you know they are there,, and then leavo an itching that lasts for hours, varied at intervals by certain sharp stabs of Sain; tho sloway, or nest-building ies, not quite so big as a bee, wnich cling to a man even in tho water, and assail the natives with such ferocity that if a canoe, by chance, touch one of their nests, the men instantly dive overboard. Present tranB-Atlantic freight rates by steamers from New York to Liver pool are for wheat three to four cents per bnshelj corn the same, flour twenty-four cents per barrel, bacon $2.10 per 2240 pounds, lard and tallow the same, while cheese pays $3.G0 per 2210 pounds, pork per barrel thirty six cents, cotton one-fourth cent per pound, hops one-half cent, tobacco $1.89 to $5.10 per hogshead and in cases $1 per 10 cubic feet. The largest shad catch of the sea son at Bed Banks, Fair Haven, Conn., was made on tho night of May 21st by four men. They caught 215 shad the first haul, and immediately set the net again and secured 250 more. Each man made over $20 for his two hours' work. ' - . Syrup ofFifrs. Nature's own true Laxative.
