tzi & tf he gaUj! &$tmum. ASTORIA, OREGON: TUESDAY...... .JUNE 17, 168i EVERY MAN'S WANTS. One wants women to vote, another wants prohibition, yet another pro tection, another free trade; on wants railroads regulated, another tele graph. One wants a postal telepraph to belong to the postoffice depart ment of the United States govern ment, another don't. "We all want our own pet measure and our own candidate. One child wants the moon, another the stars. "We all want a half loaf. If we can't get it shall we have no bread? Of course, my friend, what you want is highly important. You have abundant good reasons for desiring it. But life should have taught us all that we are not likely to get all we want just yet. "What is the next best thing to do? Our method has been to get with the band of men who come nearest to us in their wants. If we can substanti ally agree upon a few of the most important wants of mankind we will act together to acquire thdm. The first thing we want is liberty. The man who believes that slavery is a good thing oannot come in with .us. The reason is, all our .faculties were given for use, and we want to see all men free to use them. "We want edu cation for all, that they may know the be3t way to develop and cultivate all their powers and faculties. Next, after liberty, we want nil men to take an interest in their fellow man. To get them steady work at good wages, to encourage them in temperate, industrious and economical habits. Then, to get them to think for themselves, to take no man's word for anything except he relates a fact To let him draw no conclusion for you, only to lot him help you to draw it for yourself. That man does you the best serrice who compels you to think for yourself. He puts you to sleep, and to a large extent kills you mentally when he thinks for you. Whoever thinks most is greatest, then you say not quite. Thinking tends to get yon right when you think. Enough to reach the right and cling to that, then you become good as well as great. Then you think well and aot right, that is wisdom, that is the great thing. Eight thinking and right acting come from right choice of thought and action. Think right of God, the source and ideal of all that is right, then of man the chief object of all earthly action, yourself in cluded, and you will have made a good start. You will then come into perfect harmony with the eternal vanites. You will have no contest with divine law, no right human law. By that time you will learn that love is the fulfilling fof the law, all law divine human. Then you are ready for the golden rule, and the secend table of the divine law. "Love thy neighbor as thyself." "As ye would that others should do unto, you, do ye even so unto them." This is good religion and good politics. Join with all right minded men to put into ac tion in the various circles of govern ment all that is possible. If none of you get all you want done, get all you can. An official statement shows that the total land area .of the United States, not including Alaska, is 1,900,800,000 acres, and according to the last censuB 536,081,835 acre3 were in farmB. A large amount, com prising at least 300,000,000 acres, is worthless either for culture or for timber, so that the amount of public lands available for settlement is real ly about 973,950,000 acres. Becent sales have reduced it to about 967, 000,000 acres. It will promote the prosperity of the nation if the whole . of this land is reserved for actual settlers. The average area of the 4,008,907 farms of the Bepublic in 1880 was 133 acres each, and the proper division of what remains of the public domain would add about 8,000000 to the total number of farms. Twenxt-eight years ago today, the first national convention of the pres ent Eepublican party met at Phila delphia, and nominated Jno C. Fre mont, of California, for president, -and "Vym: J. Dayton, of New Jersey, for vice-president. The Democratic national convention had met at Cin cinnati, June 2, and nominated Jas. Buchanan, of Pennsylvania, and Jno. C. Breckenridge, of Kentuoky, who were elected the following November. The selling or exposing for sale of intoxicating liquors has been prohib ited in Vermont for the last thirty years, and yet it is said there are 426 places in the slate where intoxicating liquors are more or less openly sold. One of our country exchanges thinks it is about time a journalist was elected president That is why we took Blaine. This is the 109th"anniversary of the battle of Bunker hilL For Sale Cheap.
