Daka, of tbe New York Sun, who lately returned Trom a trip through Mexico, draws Home striking contrasts between tho government of that country and this. Although both are republics, and the constitu- tion of that country was borrowed Irom ours, there is no similarity in them whatever. In theory the coun try is like ours, divided into states, "with a general congre33, president, - state legislatures, governors, etc., but here the parallel ends. The masse of the people ars too ignorant to have any interest or to take any part in the direction of governmental affairs. There is no public opinion, no discus sion of public questions, no press that dares or even cares to discuss them. There are no political parties even. The president is a sort or inv perator liko the first Roman Csesars. His authority is unlimited, as much so as the veriest despot that rules in Asia. A new president is to be choBen in a few days, but the matter excites no interest whatever, and a visitor there would have no idea, from what he could observe, that so important an event was about to occur. No political meetings are being held and no discussion of political affairs. The slate is made up, and the men selected by the government will be elected. It is understood that General Porfirio Diaz will succeed the present incum bent, General Gonzales, because suoh is the understanding between the two men. No other oandidate is eTen men tioned. Gonzales durins his four years of administration has acquired a fortune of ten millions of dollars, acquired by shameless jobbery. Cor ruption is universal throughout all departments of government and despotism in its worst form reigns .under the name of democracy. The official dispatches touching the proposed European conference on tho Egyptian question are about as 'varied and contradictory as com mentaries on tho scriptures. One says the entire question of Egyptian control as well as that of tho finan cial management of Egypt is to bo reopened; that France and Italy have so demanded, and that the Gladstone government has yielded. Another that such an invasion of English prestige cannot for a moment be be thought of. Another that Turkey will not take any part iu the confer ence if any protectorate or any idea oV European annexation is to be mentioned. And it is to be hoped that the sick, man has tho Russian bear back of him smoothing his pil low. For as the "great Beaconsfield" stopped the czar when on his way to Constantinople iu 1876-7, so the czar should drive John Bull out of Egypt to-day. A TArEE by Sir John Pope Henes ney iu tho Nineteenth Century on "What do the Irish read J" -rill in all probability provoke considerable dis cussion. In his travels through Iro land Sir. John has found that the younger generation is being fed on nationalist literature, which is strong in favor of Irish independence. This is better than dynamite. It is. really the strongest feature of Irish patriot ism that England Trill have to face in the future. To tho Ireland of the nest generation fed on such literature England will have to grant equal rights and an untrammeled industry or national independence. It was be cause New England was on the whole smarter than her grandmother, that she succeeded in winning her inde pendence, and when Ireland has equal claims they will be granted, either with or against the will of England Ik 1869 Kentucky was assessed as the richest southern state. Virginia came second and Texas third; Georgia, Tennessee, Louisiana and North Car olina were respectively fourth, fifth, uixth and seventh, as they are now. South Carolina ranked eighth, and Alabama, Mississippi, Arkansas and Florida brought up tho rear in the order given. That was in 1879. Mark the change in four years. In 1883 Texas came to the front as first, hav ing added to her wealth in that time 33,500,000 more than all the property m .North Carolina is worth, 8103,000, 000 more than would buy tho state of South Carolina, $32,000,000 more than the Louisianians value their entire state, including its seaport, New Or leans, and more than four times the entire valuation of Florida. As com pared with herself, Texas gained in ne xour years yo.yu per cont Utah has now 10,000 small farms averaging nearly five acres, and the whole must bo irrigated. There is only one large farm in the territory, and it is owned by a company. The great salt lake, according to Elder Cannon, contains enough salt to sup ply America for centuries. All that is necessary in preparing it for mar kot is to go to the edge of the lake with o wagon, and a man with a pair of rubber boots can load it with a shovel.
