Hendricks Intcrviewea.
T3fDiAXAOPiiis, June 11. Hon.
Thomas A Hendricks, in an inter-
Tiew concerningr Tilueus letter or de
clination, said the news difl not sur
prise him, for when ho visited Tilden
inAngUBt last that gontleman vory
firmly announced his intention to re
main permanently out of politics.
On a succeeding visit in April last,
the same determination "was express
ed. Hendricks thought thero was
little doubt that tho old ticket would
have been nominated at the Chicago
convention if it had not been for the
declination to-day. Ho said that tho
demand for it among the Democracy
viiq nlmrwfc nnirersaL and greater
.than anv movement of the kind ever
seen in politics. Personally .he felt
no great disappointment; he didnot
want the office of vice president eight
years ago, and did not want itr now.
If the old-ticket had remained in the
field lie should have considered the
election to that place a great honor,
conferred by the people, as a rebuke
to -what they considered a great
wrong. It -would have prevented the
seating of Hayes in 1876 from becom
ing a precedent for future elections.
Hendricks added that only a3 an ex
pression of the indignation of the
people would he have regarded the
election to -the vice presidency as an
honor to be sought.
Railroad Lands. '
"A poster has been issued from the
land office of the O. & O.. railroad,
giving notice that the lands of the
company south of Eoseburg are open
for settlement Settlers must agree
with the railroad company to pay
such price as the company may de
mand. At any time the companvmay
warn settlers upon its lands that a
settlement must be made with regard
to payment for such land. If, after
ninety days from the time such warn
ing be published in the Oregonian
and a county paper, the settler fails
to come to tune, the company -will
sell or seize the land and allow the
settler nothing for improvements."
Tidings.
This is about as one-sided u propo
sition as the railroad company could
possibly make. Tho man who settles
upon the land is liablo to lose im
provements, as tho price set by the
company would in all probability be
rated from the amount of work made
thereon. Statesman.
