tovr. a ropnie like Fish and a par
cel of foul-mouthed scandal-mongers
are endeavoring to make the public
believe that the general was a partr
to the frauds of Grant & Ward.
These creatures are the legitimate
spawn of the editor of the Gazetteer,
who, just a hundred years ugo, in
formed the American public mat
Washinuton was a fool by nature
and Franklin was a fool from age.
Fish undoubtedly supposed when
no robbed the depositors in ins
bank "that he was becoming a partner
in knavish but profitable government
contracts, and judging other men by
himself, took for granted that Grant
was also a party to the knavery. In
point of fact, ho has failed to Bhow
that the General had anytning but
such a general knowledge of the busi
ness of the firm as he derived from
conversations with his sons. All that
is said in the letters from the Gener
al which Fish publishes is that Grant
believed the firm to bo doing u good
business and was willing to help
them with his name.
There was once a man who was re

It was supposed ho was dead. .But
this must be a mistake. He is still
editing a journal in the United
States.
A New Engine of "War.
Nnw Tork, Juno 9. A Bridgeport,
Conn., specialsays: A most formidable
invention for harbor defense, the now
electrical torpedo boat, alter a series
of secret nnd highly satisfactory trials
in this vicinity, is to bosont to Sandy
Hook for final test at the United
States experiment station. It is a
long, cylindical iron vessel, sub
merged till nearly under water, run
by electricity from shore, by means
of copper wires, and can be used as
safely and as readily at night as in
day-time. It never fails to fasten a
torpedo to any vessel toward which it
may be directed. It is swift and
noiseless and undoubtedly one of the
most horrible engines of warfare ever
invented. Government othcials who
have witnessed its workings are
pleased with its perfect action.
