next Monday, when occurs the annu
al meeting o &e O. B. & N. Co., and
the Oregon and Transcontinental Co.
The latter named organization has
always been a bladdery sort of associ
atipn, and had about the same rela
tion to tho O. B. &-N, and other rail
ways In this J state, that a "construc
tion company" has to the owners of
the road. Its affairs are praotically
being administered upon, and the O.
K. & N. Co. would appear to be its
legatee.
The real fight is between the
Northern Pacific and the Oregon
Short Lino (which is but another
name' for tho Union Pacific). It is
thi3 that makes Monday's meeting so
important. The O. K. & N. Co., is
able to dictate terms and occupies
admirable ground. Whoever makes
the best overtures wins the prize.
The O. K. & N. Co. now has nearly
ever outlet from Snake river to As
toria, and what is of particular value
to that corporation is the fact that it
has the monopoly of seventy-five
miles of the road where fhe Columbia
river forces its way through the Cas
cades. It is there; its track is built;
it occupies the ground, and there is
room foi no other. This makes it
master of the situation. The Unidn
Pacific needs it; the Northern Pacific
must have it; both want it, and tho
highest bidder takes it.
When the Tillard ''system' began
to tumble to pieces the O. R. fc N.
suffered least for it was the best
piece of properly that went under
the generic term 'Yillnrd stocks."
Long before the crash came it was
seen that tho interests of tho N. P. B.
R. Co., and the O. B. & N. Co.,
were diametrically opposite and
that opposition of interests wus in
evitable. To-day the Northern Pa
cific people are in better shape than
the Union .Pacific or Oregon Short
Line men, for the Northern Pacific
folks in their seeking for a tide water
outlet can go to the Sound. Of course
it will cost them more to build and
maintain that route, but there is a
possibility that may be the result of
the fight for possession of the north
west trade.
.The unknown factor in tho problem
is the possession of the majority of
0. B. &, N. stock. Few know, and
those that know won't tell. While
guessing is in order and one guess is
as good as another, it is our belief
that Jay Gould has as much to do
with it as anybody.
With all this Astoria has an inti
mate ooncorn, and while a possibility
of independence exists and the prob
abilities of a coast line are bv no
meanB obscure, it appears as though
for the present the O. E. & N. Co. had
the most to do with the matter.
The Oregon Short Lino is dallying
with points to tho Sound; the North
ern Pacific has based its most tangi
ble'hopes on the Sound; and in that
direction lies our mosc .formidable
rival. Astoria has always exercised
a good deal of independence in this
matter, conscious that in time her in
comparable situation and geographi
cal .facilities would bring to her the
elements of material wealth, and in
the present situation it is to her best
interests that neither company shall
jobiain any monopoly of tho routes or
passes. It would, hurt our futuro to
have the Northern Pacific capture
the works, and it would delay our
ultimate success to have the Oregon
Short Line secure control of the river
passes.

journals, are both going to work
against Blaine throughout the fight.

convention wouldn't give them what
they wanted they kick.
