THINKS OF
Svcrtska Tiibunut, a leading Scan
dinavi m journal published in Chica
go, has a few remaika concerning
those who are sometimes called 'for
eigner?,' which contain a ood deal
of sound sense. Hays our Swedish
contemporary :
Satire-horn Americans arn often
heard to complain of the un-American
sentiments entertained and ex
pressed by somt- of the naturalized
citizens in this country. They say,
and Svcnska Tribunal has on more
than one occasion been tempted to
aay the same, that the social and po
litical tendency of these foreigners is
to establish an impcrium in impciio,
or a fitate within the state. Never
theless -ve eaudidh believe they have
no real desire or "deliberate purpose
to do so, or in any other serious way
to antagonize what we may call the
American idea. Great many of the
roreign-uoni voters are, in ineir po
litical actions, blinded by wrong no
tions of their duties as Bepublioan
citizens. They have not had time or
opportunity to become acquainted
with the true spirit of our institutions
and the aim of enlightened Democra
cy. Then add tb this the fact that
thej are never let alone by time-serving
and demagogical politichns who
lead the unwary ones astray by ap
peals to their passions and prejudices,
and vou need not wonder over their
apparent hostility to the principles
every true American, whether native
or foreign-born, hold" dear. Neither
have on then reason io fear that the i
high pressure of our educational J
loi ces and political meuiou are not
able eventually to transform all now
flashing notions and divergent views
into one common, clear and compre
hensive idea npprovable by the high
rst ideal of American citizenship.
But what we are going io say, is
that the foreign elements aie, as a
whole, in one lespect at leai, already
now more unanimously American
.than the natives themselves. Speak-
ing for the three leading nationalities,
the bcanaiuavians, the uermans, anil
the Irish, wc are free to say that they,
in whatever touches the honor and
dignity of America, stand up for their j
adopted country as against the states
wnence mev nave come, in mis mev
are perfect strangers to that un-American,
if it would not be more proper
to say unmanly, and unwise so called
conservatism prevalent among many
of those, who nevertheless boast ol
the ability to trace their lineage down
io the heroes of Bunker Hill and Lex
ington This, if nothing else, demon
strates that we are no enemies to the
Kopublic, no masked friends of the
governments from which we have fled.
Tho reason is clear. We are Repub
licans, or Democrats if you prefer,
from our own free and rational
choice, when the natives are uncon
sciously born to tho name; we have
acquired the title, they have inherit
ed it; we liavo learned the difference
between the progressive Republic
and the effete monarchies by a living
experience, they cannot contrast the
two sides only theoretically. This
explains the absence of all monarch
ical proclivities as far as we are con
cerned; and is it not possible that
this fact also accounts for the dis
cernable difference between the senti
ments that characterized tho thirteen
young and weak colonies of 177G, and
those advocated in high places now,
when the starry flag waves proudly
over thirty-eight great and well-developed
states?
Be this as it mav. Tho fact now is
that tho 500,000 Swedes living within
tho United States have a presidential
choice, and that choice is the man
who is himself not atraid, and thinks
that this mighty republic has no rea
son to he afraid" of observing that de
gree of noble and natural iudepend-i
ence witnout wiucu any staio, oe it
ever so great in other respects, sinks
into a political nonentity among the
nations of the world. Por this, as
well as for his ripe experience and
consummate ability as a statesman
generally, tho Swedish-American citi
zens admire James U-. Jiaine. They
look upon him as the best representa
tive of the principles to which they
have been uudeviatingly attached
ever since tho foundation of the party
lie has served so brilliantly and effi
ciency when ever it needed courage
in a crisis or inspiration in an hour
of doubt and indecision. They ad
mire him for his grit and pluck.
They admire him for hia almost un
equalled ability to grasp every public
problem and his equally quick and
correct judgment about the best way
of solving it. But their admiration
for his forfegn policy is especially
lugk. Por they know him to bo right
in that as in most other things. They
want to see tho country of their
adoption, which they love with pa
triotic fervor, maintain its dignity in
its dealings with other powers. They
hate to see this country submit to af
fronts from tho European monarchies
in the meek and lowly spirit that be
fits a fifth-rate power, but not the one
that stands first in pcaco and first in
war, and first in tho heart of overy
liberty loving being on tho globe.
They know that America is great
enough, and in its greatness snfli
oiently respectable, to dare to speak
as it behooves a first-class and pro
gressive state without any risk or
danger. But thoy are not bellicose;
they havo no foreign grievances to
avenge, no alien ideas to propagate,
no cause of European origin and
nature to defend. Consequently, they
have no desire that this government
shall invito tho hostility ot ethers: on
the contrary, thoy are in favor of
maintainingstrictneutrality on every
question not concerning tho western
continent, and they know that Blaine
is the foremost exponent and defender
of these views. But they know, too,
thai he is adverse to tho undignified
and almost crouching attitude the
government nt present assumes in its
diplomatic dealings with other na
tions, and they want his policy to be
come the policy of the country.

Idaho's New Governor.
The new Governor of Idaho and
the mo3t intelligent of the warlike
Nez Perces tribe, the terror of the
territory, met very curiously yester
day in the Continental hotel. James
Reubens, as he is known though, his
real name is He-yom-ta-mo-tsa-ka-win,
or Bird-on-the-Mountain is,
nest to Joseph, who. with his band,
A are now prisoners or war, rue most
important Indian personage in Idaho.
Though haughty and exhibiting many
savage traits, Jame3 is very intelli
gent and, having had charge of the
only school among his people, is here
lecturing about them. He wa; chief
of General Howard's Indian scouts,
acting against his own people, but
since their overthrow he has espous
ed Joseph's cause and they are now
fast friends. In a dark suit and
Derby hat James, who had just paid
his bill, was standing at the hotel
counter with Ex-Indian Agent Jor-
don. smoking a cigarette. J ust then
Governor Buun, with a friend, passed
through and they were introduced.
"You are the new governor then?"
said the chief.
"Yes,'' said Mr. Bunn; "and I am
glad to find such nu intelligent repre
sentative of your race in Idaho. How
many Indians are their?" he asked,
nonchalantly running his fingorn
through his hair.
'Between three and lour thousand.
But it is the white men -ou will need
to look after. Governor Neal visited
the territory of our tribe when ho
came and wojjave him safe escort.'
"Is Joseph going back? I hear ho
is. J hone vou imunns win nenave
yourselves."
Xo; Joseph will not go back.
The
Indian is all right It is the white
man who is wrong. The Xez Perco
are doing right. When they are
pushed to the wall then differences
occur. It tho Indians will behave
themselves they may depend upon
tho governor."
"Well- ta-ta: I'll see you later," re
marked tho governor, ambling off.
'Sorry io see you smoking cigarettes.
Getting too civilized,
