tt.V liUTLEIPS BOOM.
A Washington1 special says: The
nomination of Blaine by the Repub
lican convention has set the Demo
crats to loeking: over the list of avail
able candidates for a man who can be
counted on to keep in the Democrat
ic party the large element that looks
. favorably upon Blaine and his record
on the Chinese question. In casting
about for such a man the name of
Benjamin F. Butler looms up more
conspicuously than any other name
mentioned in connection -with the
Democratic nomination. The feeling
against Blaine in New York and
Massachusetts Btrengthen3 the
Butler boom, and it is
claimed," and good reasons
are given in support of the claim, that
Butler is the only man who can carry
Massachusetts; that he, and he alone
of all the Democratic candidates,
could retain in tho Democratic party
that large element among the work
ing classes in every state in the Union
who admire the dash and pluck of
the Maiue statesman, and who look
upon him as a sure companion of the
working classes.

that laid the golden eggs. Congress
ought to secure this finaoial fowl and
endeavor io perpetuate its species. A
colossal incubating establishment,
under tho control of the government,
could bo erected in some convenient
place and tho products carefullv cul
tivated. In a comparatively short
time it would raise nickels enough to
payoff tho national debt and build a
navy. Such a golden, or rather &
nickel-plated, opportunity ought, not
to be neglected.

will not exceed 40,000 cases. Six
canneries will not pack at all, end a
short run on Frazer river is consider

the runs lor many years in the north

All things point to a shortage of

PRIVATE SALE!
THE
Ir Cinciuuatus, with a couple of hia
long-lioni steers and his old-fashioned
straight-beamed plowywith its wooden
spike driven through, simply to tickle
the ground, had been out at Fargo
recently, when the Dakotans were
breaking the virgin soil with a steam
plow, the old gentleman would most
likely have sent a special to Washing
ton advising that the new people of
the Northwest be admitted into the
Union at once. With his rig Cincin
natus could not have broken one acre
a year in Dakota.
In prairie countries, like Dakota
and Iowa, the plowing field is often
the whole length of the farmer's
quarter section of land that is, a half
mile furrow. And at the first plow
ing or breaking of the soil it takes a
man with four horses or four oxen,
and a boy to drive them, a day to
break a little over an acre. An acre
and a half a day is good work. And
it is hard tugging for man and ani
mal and plow.
The new sulky plows, by which a
man takes his seat on the plow a good
deal as he does in a road sulky, made
it far easier for the infin, but ;i littlo
heaviei for the beasts. By the ar
rangement jyxni. triad, ut T?a.rgo trac
tion steam engine draws eight plows
after it and instead of one acre
breaks twentj-five acres a day. Break
ing by the old method is worth $3 an
acre and it is held that the steam
plow can afford to break at Si an acre.
The main advantage of course is in
tue fact that by this saving a great
many men are freed from manual
labor and sent into politics, while
two-thirds of the agriculturist's capi
tal is left for free speculation.
Under the heading "A Beacons-
field beyond the seas," the London
Pall Mall Gazelle of the 7th, says:
"Blaine's nomination is the most
notable event for England since Lin
coln was assassinated. "Wherever
Blaifle can oust the British from po
sitions they hold on the American
continent he will use his influence.
His menacing intimation that he dis
regarded the Clayton-Bulwer treaty
is an evil augury for the future rela
tions of England and America. His
intervention in Peru is most ominous.
Then he has declared that he disliked
England to win commercial triumphs
in fields belonging to America. Eng
land watches with extieme solicitude
tho progress of the campaign."

TnEitn wero several noticeable
points about the convention that
nominated Elaine at Chicago last
week It -was composed of the larg
est number of delegates that ever
assembled in a national convention
in this country; it nominated the
man who was the strongest at the
start; it had for temporary chairman
a negro; it had as one of the chap
lains who opened the sessions with
prayer a Eoman Catholic priest; and
it selected for the first time in twen
ty-four years, a man who had nothing
to do with the rebellion, except in a
civic capaoity.

It is now charged that Blaine
taught school in early life, and was
afterward editor of a newspaper, but
it is hardly fair to bring up those in
discretions of a man's early career
against him, just because he happens I
to be running for president.
Bkaixe is the first candidate for
the presidency who wrote a book on
the eve of the campaign. That same
book is a tremendous success, and
