In no state in tho Union is tho ex citement over the approaching presi dential election so intense as in Nevada. While having, like other people, their patriotic impulses, par tisan learnings and personal pref erences as to candidates, the voters of Nevada are practical men, apa never foolishly allow sentiment to in terfere with business. They perceivt now, with the rest of tho world, that the coming election will ba a verj close one, and that each side will fight fiercely for every electoral vote. Nevada has three of them. She hasn't much else at present The mines are not producing, and the farmers can find no market worth speaking of for their produce the home sale being limited and outside competition with California farmers being out of the question." Politics isihe only business remaining from which anything like a reasonable profit can be derived. '-The state is naturally Republican by about five or six hundred majority," a Nevada senator said to the writer a few days ago, "But it all depends upon which side has the sack when it comes down to voting. There are now less than fifteen thousand voters in the state." We call the attention of the suc cessors of Chairmen Barnum and Jewell, of the Democratic and Re publican national committees, to these facts. Three electoral votes, and only fifteen thousand voters to handle 1 It would be the pleasant pastime of an afternoon for a man like Senator Dorsey to pocket those votes Dorsey, the. secretary of tho Republican committee, whoso master ly us.e of "soap" in Indiana, in 1880, drew from Mr. Arthur, in a public speech, at Delmonico's something like three years ago, encomiums which evoked "ereat laughter" from Mr. Beecher, General Grant and the hundred or more great. men of the party who sat on that memorable and elevatine occasion at the banqueting- board. Patriot mathematicians have fienred that tho party which can pur chase one-fifth of the vote of a state rmay trust to the momentum thus im parted to carry its snip into port, xn a close election, such as that which this year's gives promise of being, an electoral vote would bo dirt cheap at 8100,000, reasonably low atS150,0C0 and not dear at 200,000. At the first figure each of the three thousand Nevada votes open to solid, Hunting tonian reasons would receive S100 for his ballot, at the second S150, and the third $200. These will seem monstrously high prices to the pub lic men of the east, who are accus tomed to regard a two-dollar green back as an equivalent for a vote; but the ruinous competition with the nanner votine of European immi grants has not yet affected tho Ne vada market Besides, a large por tion of the voters have in their time been millionaires, and are expansive in their financial ideas, even in their present " poverty. A mere United States senalorship has been knocked down by them'for over half a million. That was in flush times, however, and we dare say that an offer of half that aura would now bo accepted. Under the circumstances it is not at all surprising that Nevada's politi cal excitement should exceed that of any other state, and that a spirit of gayetyhas dissipated the clouds of gloom which for Isovoral years have hung low over the sagebrush. Men see in the approaching contest a sure opportunity to make at last that longed-for "raise" which will enable them to leave the state which has come to be the sole dream of hope left in the minds of many of her citi zens. Those who figure that because Nevada went for Hancock in 1880 she will be Democratic this year, and those who fancy that the electric Mr. Blaine can sweep her with a whoop, don't know Nevada. She is sitting on the fence, and a flag waves from the staff on the peak of Mount Davidson, so very red and high that the bidders of both parties, even 'as far off as Washington and New York, can't by any possibility mistake the flag's color or meaning, if they turn their patriotic eyes thai way.
