a) t dpathi 3tetnriatt. ASTORIA, OREGON: SATURDAY- .JUNE 7, 1BS4 LINCOLN, 1S6&-BLAINE, 1S31. The great struggle is over and Blaine is the Bepublican nominee for President of the United States by a vote of 5M, practically unanimous. Yesterday's proceedings bore a slight resemblance to the Chicago convention of twenty four years ago. It is certain that good management on the part of Republicans of Illinois, coupled with the fact that the con vention of 1860 was held at Chicago, defeated Seward and made Lincoln thd Bepublican nominee. "When that convention met Seward wa3 by great odds the leading candidate. Thur low Weed was his manager and Wil liam M. Evarts his spokesman. Each excelled in his respective role. Had the convention been held in the state of New Zork, Seward probably would have been nominated on the first ballot; notwithstanding the in flexible opposition of Horace Greeley. But in Illinois, at Chicago, the very political heart of the great west, the conditions were changed. Pennsyl vania was against Seward because Simon Cameron was in the list of can didates. Indiana was opposed to him because Morton and Henery S. Lane declared ho could not carry that state. Horaoo Greeley held a certificate as delegate from Oregon, and opposed Seward on personal grounds, nominating Edward Bates of Missouri. Ohio presented Salmon P. Chase as her choice. The ma jority of the names presented were from the states west of the Allegha niea. Illinois had her man, too, but sprung his name only at the last mo ment. And the party in Illinois left no chance unprovided for. The great mass of the "outsiders" were from that state and tho greatest number of skillful managers. On the first bal lot Seward had 17o6 votes, Lincoln 102, and 190 votes were distri buted to Cameron, Bates, Chase, Judge McLean, Dayton nnd Collamer. Four of these were west ern men and three from oast of the Alleghanies. The 190 scattered votes held tho powor to nominate. On the second ballot they manifested their preference. Seward gained but 7 votes, Lincoln gained 79. On the third ballot Lincoln was nominated. His nomination was due, mainly, to two causes: First, the place where the convention was held in his own state, the center of the great weBt, where the sentiment in favor of a western man prevailed; and second, outside pressure. We cannot better explain tho value of this last named quality than by quoting a passsge or two from Blaine's "Thirty Years of Congress," Chapter Till : In a final analysis of the causes and forces which nominated Mr. Lin coln, great weight must be given to the influence which came from the place where the convention was held and from the sympathy and presence of the surrounding crowd. Illinois Republicans, from Cairo to the Wis consin line, were present in uncount ed thousands. Had the conditions been changed, and the na tional convention of Republicans assembled in Albany, it is scarcely to be doubted that Mr. Seward would have been nominated. It is quite certain that Lincoln would notliave been nominated. And it is scarcely to be doubted that had yesterday's convention been held at Albany, or any other city in the state of Now York, Arthur would probably be nominated. It is quite certain that Blaine would not; for in such a conventien the outside pres sure and surroundings would bo all against him. But at Chicago, the center of Republican power, Mr. Blaine had a better and more enthu siastic backing from Iowa, Kansas, Michigan, Ohio, Wisconsin, Minne sota, Nebraska, Colorado, California, Oregon, Nevada and tho territories, not to mention Pennsylvania. New Jersey and Maine than all the rest, with the single exception of Logan, who was for Blaine next to himself. This outside pressure was not of the quality of a thoughtless mob in 1860, nor was it this year. It was com posed of the ablest and most earnest Republicans of all the thorough Re publican states; men who knew as well as any member of the conven tion what the majority of the party wanted, and who more accurately represented that majority than the office-holders and skilled politicians. An American publisher has made . Lord Tennyson the munificent offer of one hundred thousand dollars to come over to this country for threb months and allow his hands to-be shaken by his many admirers here. Such a condescension on the part of tho poet laureate would undoubtedly be very gratifying. It would also re sult in a great loss to literature, bb the strain of shaking hands with a peo ple adept at the art would forever render the Baron physically unfit for striking the poetic lyre. His fairy fingers might assume tho muscular tissue of a pugilist and make him more fit for the prize ring than to vibrate the tender chords that touch the hearts of men. No, Mr. Tenny sen: clasp the coronet oloser to your brow and readjust the folds of your flowing robes, but let the tempting offer go. Every voter on the Pacific coast felt it as a personal compliment when be heard of Blaine's nomination yes-trdv. SEW TO-DAY. A CARD.
