One of tbo political peculiarities of the times is the persistence of tie Greenback notion. There ore per sona in small numbers in every state in the Union who firmly believo that a debt is discharged when a notd is given for it Thoro was a moaning to the agitation before resumption. Il their policy had been adopted new issues of greenbacks would havo fol lowed rapidly. Every successivo is sue would have reduced tne value. In time, as it happened in tho con federacy, and afterwards also in Hayti, about a bushel of paper notes would be required to buy a bushel ol potatoes. It is not long since $4,000 in paper was the price of a chip hat in the island to which reference is made. The effect would be that all the debts and mortgages of. the country would have been practically wilted out To that extent there was mean- ins in the Greenback movement Since resumption there is no place for the notion in the country. But for all that the agitation is kept up, Greenback tiokete are found in sever al of the states. There has been a regular Greenback nomination for the presidency ever since 1876. A national convention of the party has just been held and Ben Butler is this time to be its candidate. The platform says that they want the money that saved the country in the time of war. This is a now but more modest rendering of the "battle stained greenback" and "the finest currency the world ever saw." What these people call money are notes of liand, without date, given by the gov ernment in exchange for services ( on the field, supplies and munitions, which have not been liquidated and are still in circulation. They want more of these notes now, but do not specify what they are to be issued for. A gratuitous distribution to all good citizens maybe what they mean. A paternal government is to fill every body's pocket every morning with new and crisp notes that is to say, it is to run in debt to every citizen so rewarded but never pay him. To clap the climax, they insist that all the gold and silver in tho treasury shall at once be paid out This is for the purpose of making room for the new greenbacks. But the finan cial paradise would turnout to be very different from what they sup pose it would be. The greenbacks which they so highly prize are worth 100 cents on the dollar, because there are gold and silver in tho treasury to redeem as many of them as are likely to bo presented. If that gold and silver should be paid out, greenbacks would run down as fast as they ran up, as tho time for resumption drew nigh. These financiers evidently are of the opinion that tho greenbacks appreciated by some unknown quality within themselves. But they simply advance to par as gold began to flow into the country. But as there is no law in this country to prevent people from being as muddled as they pleaso on any question, the Greenbackers regularly assemble every four years and put forward a candidate for the presidency. All the Bago.
