ASTORIA, OREGON:
SUNDAY
..JUNE 1. 1884
A OUMPSE AT'ROYALTY."
A book likely to be widely read for
its glimpses into the byways of Eu
ropean royalty is "The Life and Let
tenrpf. Princess Alice." Trom the
proud and rich En dish court to the
qually prond but purse-pinched pal
ace at Darmstadt was a sea-change
indeed, and the letters of thePrincess
wiU do good if only showing how
much better off an American busi
ness man's wife is than was this
daughter of the riehest kingdom in
the world.
The letters of the Princess to her
family in England, and particularly
the Queen, a memoir translated from
the German and a preface by the
Princess Helena, .make up the Ixxiy
of the book. With the history of the
Prinoess from her childhood and
early life 13 the favorite daughter of
Princo Albert down to her death by
diptheria contracted at the bedside
of her children, the world is familiar.
It can, however, do no harm to read
again this story of the life of a wo
man who, although a princess, was
as-Bimplo and homely in her daily
life as any burgher's wife in a little
German town. Her heroism was one
of the fine kind that consists of pas
sive, nncomplaininff endurance that
bears.its sorrows quietly while turn
ing a brave face to the world.
Two portraits accompany this book,
one of the Princess Alice from
photograph taken in 1860, two years
before her marriage with Prince Louis
of Hesse Darmstadt, in which she is
represented as a sweet, simple English
girl, with her hair smoothly banded, as
was then the fashion. The other
forms the frontispiece, and is taken
from a German photograph dated
1878. In this the Princess appears as
a stately and dignified lady of a some
what German cast of countenance. In
fact, she looks like the wife of a Ger
man burgher, and this is about what
she was, for Prince Louis of Hesse, a
small eyed creature, who is talking of
marrying again, was impecunious
terribly so and not all the guineas
of his wife's dowry and settlement
sufficed to give the young couple a de
cent establishment An American girl
weuld have turned up her no3e at the
clothes Victoria's daughter .had to
wear. The royal family never dressed
well until the Princess Alexandra mar
ried into their sot, but they probably
had "enough to be comfortable . in
whereas, the Princess of Hesse-Darrc--
Btadt had to turn her clothes and
patch and mend like any hausfrau.
No wonder the princess said she
looked back to her childhood and girl
hood as the happiest time of her
life. She evidently loved her hus
band, but love in a small German
palace with only a few servants, like
love in a .cottage, has to bo paid for
somehow; and carking cares crept
into the princely household very
early in the wedded life of the young
couple. They were always hard up.
Besides the princess was lonely and
her children were eternally having
coughs aud colds. She tells the
Queen of England that "whooping
cough is a nasty thing."
"The man who built our house
wants money and wo can scarcely
manage it."
"We shall be beggars very soon if
all goes on as it promises to do."
"Times are hard; it wants all a
Christian's courage and patience to
carry one through them."
As a family the Hesse-Dannstadts
were always ailing. "Swelled neckB,"
"rashes," "scarlet fever" and similar
trials were so many thorns in the
flesh to them. Perpetual croup !
When they went "to Scheveninger
they found the place so expensive
that they had to move to Blanken
burgh for eoonomy.
Some pretty bits of domestic life
are worked in among the cares and
trials. The'mother's fondnesB for her
.children, as shon in the letters, is
very touching and natural The
death of little Prince Fritz, who fell
from a window almost under his
mother's eyes, begins the chapter of
miseries which ended in the death of
the youngest child, and that of the
good, charitable, unselfish prinoeas,
whose name is associated with all
the virtues of the royal family of
England and none of their foibles.
Here's a passage which illustrates
the relations of the princess with
her royal mether:
The christening went off very well.
Baby looked really pretty for so
young an individual Marie (Duch
ess of Edinburgh), quite in pink.
held her godchild, and my mother-in-law,
with her best love, begs me to
tell you it had pleased her so much
that you had asked her to represent
you. My three older girls looked
very nice, I thought, in lavender silk
. (your Christmas present). I had the
t . same color, and "Sunny," one of the
younger children, was immensely ad-
mired.
Very sweetly does the princcsB
speak of all those left behind in Eng
land, and particularly in Scotland.
In one place she says:
I shall get a comforter done for
Sirs. Brown, kind old woman. Will
- -you tell her the plaid she made me
still goes everywhere with ma
The princesB evidently spoke and
wrote German as fluently as English,
and the letters wore written in that
-language, being translated by the
Princess Christian.
